Old school SMS becomes lifeline as Iran blocks roaming, WhatsApp amid escalating tensions, says Malaysia's ambassador

Malaysia's Ambassador to Iran, Khairi Omar, said roaming services in the country, including WhatsApp, are currently blocked. 'In Iran, SMS communication is still open between local Iranian numbers. Domestically, people can still stay in touch. However, if we try to call an Iranian number from here, it won't go through, as roaming services have been shut down. But calls from Iran to outside the country are still possible. So, we've resorted to the old-fashioned way, text messages, which not many people use anymore. 'WhatsApp messages and similar platforms were completely inaccessible, though I believe some access is gradually returning, but still tightly controlled to ensure that sensitive information related to security issues isn't leaked,' he spoke to reporters last night. He arrived from Iran with a group of 24 individuals, comprising 17 Malaysians, six Iranian dependents of Malaysian citizens, and one Singaporean. Khairi said the situation in Iran was volatile, with both foreign nationals and locals equally shocked by the severity of the attack, which he described as drastic.
Advertisement 'After a day or two, we began to observe a pattern in the attacks. They were more intense at night, while during the day, it seemed as though both sides had come to a mutual understanding to scale back the assaults. 'As we all know, they already identified the targets, and if one side launched a strike on certain facilities, the other side would respond. But we were always on high alert because if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time, you could easily find yourself in a situation you definitely wouldn't want to be in,' he said. The government ordered the temporary closure of the Malaysian Embassy in Iran, instructing all embassy personnel in the country to return home immediately. Meanwhile, a trader, Fadhil Yusni, 33, expressed his gratitude at being reunited with his wife, Zainab Ganood, an Iranian national who was visiting her parents. 'I panicked because I couldn't reach my wife. Alhamdulillah, tonight I feel grateful. Thank you to the government and the Foreign Ministry for evacuating my wife out of Iran,' he said, adding that he is now finding the best way to help his wife's family leave the conflict-stricken country safely. Lawyers for Daim's widow decry NFA decision as 'unacceptable'
KUALA LUMPUR: The lawyers for Toh Puan Na'imah Abdul Khalid, widow of former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, have described the police's No Further Action (NFA) decision on her report as "unacceptable" and a breach of the rule of law. Lawyers Rajesh Nagarajan and Sachpreetraj Singh Sohanpal said this in a statement after the police classified the case as NFA recently. Na'imah lodged the police report on Sept 30 last year, following a Bloomberg News article alleging political interference in the MACC's investigation against Daim. The article had claimed that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki were involved in a coordinated abuse of investigative powers. "This sudden NFA decision was conveyed to us via a letter received on June 21 from the Sentul police chief. "This decision is unacceptable, shocking, and contradicts principles of good governance and the rule of law. "For nine months, the police and the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) remained silent on Na'imah's police report. "The NFA decision came only days after she lodged a complaint with the Independent Police Conduct Commission (IPCC) over the continued failure of authorities to act on her report. "No information was provided regarding who was questioned, what steps were taken, or the actual reasons behind the NFA decision," said the statement. The statement said the report contained serious matters of public interest and should not have been dismissed without proper explanation or accountability. The decision severely undermines the integrity of the police and the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC), and confirms the deterioration of institutional independence under the current federal administration, it said. "We will not remain silent or be deterred in our pursuit of justice. "This matter will be pursued until the truth is revealed and justice is served. "The Malaysian people deserve institutions that serve the rakyat, not those in power," it added. Last year, a Bloomberg report, citing sources, claimed that the MACC was instructed to investigate Daim as well as former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his sons. According to the report, the instruction was purportedly given by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, a claim the Prime Minister's Office denied. Anwar had said that the government was considering legal action against Bloomberg over the report that MACC acted on his instructions during investigations into certain individuals.

National Women's Policy 2025–2030 Aims To Empower Women, Strengthen Nation
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 (Bernama) -- The third edition of the National Women's Policy (DWN) and Women's Development Action Plan (PTPW) 2025–2030 serves as a strategic guide to implement programmes, initiatives and collaborative efforts by all stakeholders. Women's Development Department (JPW) director-general Hanani Sapit said the renewed policy reflects the government's ongoing commitment under the Malaysia Madani framework to uphold and elevate the status of women, ensuring they continue to be respected, celebrated and recognised across sectors, both locally and globally. 'This policy, led by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, is not solely the responsibility of the ministry. It is a national-level policy involving federal and state governments, the private sector, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and civil society,' she said during an interview on Bernama TV's Apa Khabar Malaysia programme today. The updated policy focuses on four key areas, namely economy, leadership, safety and well-being. Implementation began immediately following its launch on March 8 in conjunction with International Women's Day. Hanani said that in drafting the policy, the government strengthened engagement with ministries, agencies and NGOs to ensure it is embedded at the grassroots levels. At the same time, JPW, through its State Women's Development Offices, will continue to intensify advocacy and literacy programmes in communities. The DWN and PTPW 2025–2030 aim to enable women to participate meaningfully and realise their full potential through inclusive development and gender equality. The slogan 'Empowering Women, Strengthening the Nation' was adopted to reflect the role of women as national assets, capable of shaping the country's economic growth, given that they make up nearly 50 per cent of Malaysia's population. The policy also emphasises the importance of shared leadership between men and women in national development, in line with the demographic ratio of 111 men for every 100 women. 'This inclusive approach is crucial to ensure that policy and programme development remains people-friendly and socially inclusive. Gender equality is not just a moral goal, but a critical driver of economic and social progress,' she added.

Community Mediator Plays Important Role In Resolving Conflicts At Local Level
GENERAL GEORGE TOWN, June 23 (Bernama) -- A community mediator plays an important role as an intermediary in resolving conflicts and misunderstandings at the community level. The Penang National Unity and Integration Department (JPNIN) deputy director Zulkhairi Zainal said community mediators are at the forefront, performing their duties proactively, transparently and at no cost, thereby helping to avoid court or enforcement intervention in minor cases that can be resolved harmoniously. 'These mediators comprise chairpersons of the Neighbourhood Watch Areas (KRT), who are specifically trained and certified by JPNIN as initial or preliminary assistants in case of any disputes in the community. "They act pro bono, meaning without payment and voluntarily. They are appointed to reduce issues or conflicts at the community level before they become more serious," he said to reporters after attending the Penang State Level Community Mediator Dialogue Session here today. He said there are 47 active community mediators in Penang, and the JPNIN will continue to train chairpersons or new KRT committee members from time to time to strengthen this role. Meanwhile, he said today's dialogue session involved several agencies such as the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), National Education Department (JPN), National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), and the Penang Housing Board (LPNPP), aimed at introducing the role of mediators and opening up collaboration opportunities between the agencies and JPNIN. 'Sometimes domestic issues in schools or police stations such as misunderstandings, minor arguments and family conflicts can be resolved without the need to go to court. Here is where the role of community mediators is important as a bridge to reaching an amicable solution between the parties involved,' he said. At the same time, he suggested that government agencies facing community-related issues should make community mediators their initial point of reference to resolve conflicts peacefully and judiciously. According to the National Unity Ministry, community mediators are third parties who strive to gain the acceptance of those involved in a social conflict to find points of agreement that are acceptable to all parties, with the hope that their relationships do not continue to deteriorate but instead become more positive.
