Ford recalls nearly 2,74,000 navigator and expedition SUVs due to risk of loss of brake function
Ford
is recalling nearly 274,000 of its Expedition and Lincoln-branded Navigator SUVs across the U.S. due to an issue that may cause a loss of brake function while driving, increasing crash risks.
According to documents published by the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
, the front brake lines in these now-recalled cars "may be in contact" with their engine air cleaner outlet pipe due to a potential installation defect. That can result in a
brake fluid leak
and/or a loss of brake function.
The recall covers 223,315 Expeditions and 50,474 Navigators between model years 2022 and 2024. Ford expects that just 1per cent of these vehicles have the defect, per a recall report dated Friday.
Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this recall - but the Michigan-based auto giant had received 45 warranty reports of front brake line leaks as of April 17, NHSTA documents note.
As a remedy, Ford and Lincoln dealers will inspect the front brake line of impacted vehicles and replace it or the air cleaner outlet pipe if necessary, free of charge. Dealer notifications were planned to begin Wednesday, the recall report notes, with owner letters set to be mailed out between May 26 and May 30.
In the meantime, drivers can also confirm if their specific vehicle is included in this recall and find more information using the NHTSA site or Ford's recall lookup. The company's number for this recall is 25S47.
Impacted drivers may experience an increase in pedal travel, NHSTA documents warn, meaning the pedal would need to be pressed harder to apply the brakes. And if there's a leaking brake line, the fluid level will decrease over time - potentially causing the red brake warning indicator to light up.
A spokesperson for Ford had no additional comments when reached by The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Honda recalls more than 259,000 cars across the US due to brake pedal issue
Honda is recalling more than 259,000 of its cars across the U.S. due to a problem that can cause the brake pedal to shift out of position, potentially interfering with a driver's ability to stop or slow down. According to documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall covers certain Honda Pilots between model years 2023 and 2025 - as well cars under the auto maker's luxury Acura brand: 2021-2025 Acura TLX and 2023-2025 Acura MDX vehicles. The NHTSA's recall report notes that the brake pedal pivot pin in some of these vehicles was not secured properly during production. That can lead the pedal to shift out of place and "may lead to unintended application," the report notes, increasing crash risks. "The issue could also cause an abnormal brake pedal feeling during operation, illuminate the brake malfunction light in the instrument cluster, or cause the vehicle's brake lights to remain lit even when the brake pedal is not applied," America Honda said in a statement Wednesday. As a remedy, Honda says authorized dealers will inspect the vehicles covered by this recall and replace the brake pedal assembly if necessary, free of charge. Per the NHTSA's report, the company estimates 1% of these vehicles have this issue. Dealer notifications began on June 13. And mailed owner notification letters are set to follow on July 28. In the meantime, drivers can also confirm if their specific vehicle is included in this recall and find more information using the NHTSA site or Honda's recall lookup. Between February 2024 and June 5, the NHSTA notes, Honda received three warranty claims related to this issue - but no reports of injuries. Honda began investigating the faulty brake pedal in April 2024, after receiving a report of a vehicle experiencing this issue. The company later determined that improper assembly of the brake pedal pivot pin occurred at a supplier's U.S. plant, which has since been closed. Production was transferred to a plant in Mexico - where the supplier now uses a camera sensor "to verify whether the pivot pin is staked," the recall report notes.

Trump's tariffs to add $2,000 to car prices
New tariffs introduced under former US President Donald Trump are expected to increase vehicle prices by nearly $2,000 each, according to a report by consultancy AlixPartners. The added cost is likely to be passed on to consumers, affecting both car affordability and future electric vehicle (EV) adoption in the United States. AlixPartners estimates that the $30 billion cost burden from the tariffs will lead to about one million fewer vehicles sold over the next three years. However, it still projects total US auto sales to reach 17 million units by 2030. Tariffs to impact consumers and sales 'These tariffs bring a big wall of cost,' said Mark Wakefield, global auto market lead at AlixPartners. 'We see consumers taking the majority of the hit.' According to the firm, automakers are likely to absorb about 20 per cent of the tariff costs, passing on the remaining 80 per cent — or roughly $1,760 per vehicle — to customers. General Motors and Ford have already forecast a tariff impact of $5 billion and $2.5 billion, respectively, with plans to offset some of the burden through price adjustments. Despite the anticipated short-term decline in vehicle sales, AlixPartners believes the effects will moderate over time as the US negotiates new trade agreements. The 25 per cent tariff on imported vehicles is expected to eventually reduce to 7.5 per cent on assembled cars and 5 per cent on parts. 'This tariff wall is not likely to last forever,' Wakefield said. EV sales forecast slashed The consultant also warned that the rollback of EV incentives — such as the $7,500 tax credit for battery electric vehicles — could significantly affect the US auto industry's transition to electric mobility. 'That will steer car buyers away from EVs,' Wakefield said, noting that many consumers will prioritise cost and continue purchasing petrol-powered vehicles. AlixPartners has revised its 2030 EV forecast for the US sharply downward, predicting that battery electric vehicles will make up just 17 per cent of new car sales — a decline from its previous estimate of 31 per cent. Internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles are now projected to account for 50 per cent of US car sales by 2030, up from a prior estimate of one-third. Traditional hybrids are forecast to make up 27 per cent of the market, while plug-in hybrids and extended-range EVs are expected to account for only 6 per cent, compared to the earlier prediction of 10 per cent. Wakefield added that the shift in policy direction could lead American automakers to rely more heavily on foreign platforms. 'It makes it much more likely that they end up licensing or joint venturing or otherwise using platforms and EV technologies from China,' he said. In a remark highlighting the potential consequences of this trend, Wakefield concluded: 'They'll have the world's best V8 engines by 2028. They'll probably also have the world's only V8 engines by 2028.'
