Here's Why GM Is Sticking With V8s While Everyone Else Switches to Six Cylinders

The latest car news, reviews, and features. I published a story last week that said the V8 is no longer America's truck engine. That's because manufacturers like Ford have increased six-cylinder production drastically in recent years, and Toyota has even gone V6-only in the Tundra. V8-powered models only accounted for 38% of truck registrations in 2024 as a result; meanwhile, six-cylinder models made up 47.6%. So, why the heck is General Motors investing $888 million into next-gen small-block V8 production? The simple answer is that people still want it. We reached out to GM for comment on the company's recent decision to pour copious amounts of money into its Tonawanda Engine Plant in New York. A spokesperson explained that it's all to give buyers the options they prefer. 'We're making these investments to provide our customers choice when it comes to vehicles and the powertrains we offer,' the representative said. It's no surprise that of Detroit's Big Three, GM is the one making this investment. Data provided by Chevrolet shows that half of all new Silverado 1500s ship out with a V8, whether it be the 5.3-liter (42%) or 6.2-liter (8%). Ford, on the other hand, told me it only puts V8s in about a quarter of its F-150s. GM plans to double down on V8s with the sixth-gen small-block confirmed for 2027. The whole idea is to offer customers what they want. Ram failed to do so when it cancelled the Hemi in 2024, and now, it's on a comeback-slash-apology tour as it revives the V8 for 2026 model year trucks. With this big propulsion plant investment, GM ensures customers won't have to worry about a lack of V8 options for a while. Chevrolet As I looked for insight on GM's decision, I turned to the same shortlist of auto industry experts who helped me with my last V8 story. Stephanie Brinley, principal automotive analyst at S&P Global Mobility, pointed out that GM uses its V8s in way more applications than just pickups. 'For GM, the V8 is important for both full-size truck and full-size SUV,' Brinley said. 'As you know, the full-size SUVs offer an I6 diesel or a V8. While Ford has gone to all V6 for Expedition and Lincoln Navigator, registrations of those models reached about 88,000 units in 2024. GM's full-size SUV registrations reached nearly 274,000 units, and about 93% of those were V8 engines. Add in the full-size trucks, and GM's scale for the V8 option is notably different from the full-size truck-based competition.' Ah, yes. The Chevy Tahoe is king, and after it, the GMC Yukon. Even the Cadillac Escalade sells in respectable numbers for something so pricey, and guess what engine they all rely on the most? That's right: The small-block V8. Additionally, demand for electrified trucks has cooled off tremendously. That's another area where GM has invested big-time, as it currently offers battery-only versions of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra as well as the Hummer EV. Sam Abuelsamid, vice president of market research at Telemetry Agency, notes that the soft EV truck market was likely enough to force a strong course correction. 'It didn't come as a huge surprise given the failure of full-size electric trucks in the marketplace,' Abuelsamid noted. 'Given that GM hasn't followed Ford, Toyota, and Stellantis down the turbo-six-cylinder path for truck engines, this is their most cost-effective way forward.' 'It's not known what they [GM] are planning for the gen-six small block, but assuming that they continue with the same pushrod OHV architecture, it has notable advantages over a turbo V6 in cost and compared to a DOHC V8 like Ford's Coyote in cost and packaging,' said Abuelsamid. Abuelsamid even went as far as saying it was 'always inevitable' that the V8 would remain GM's core truck engine through the 2030s. GMC Robby DeGraff, manager of product and consumer insights at AutoPacific, said it has to do almost entirely with customers' demands for variety—and, like his peer mentioned, the lack of interest in electrified pickups. 'GM making this massive investment in the future of ICE powertrains is a clear sign of the times, and the result of the consumer take rate for EVs just not being as strong as GM CEO Mary Barra and her team likely hoped for years ago,' he explained. 'While engines with fewer cylinder count continue to become more and more advanced and capable via turbocharging and electrification, there will always be some degree of robust demand for eight cylinders amongst pickup truck buyers (even though that number is shrinking).' 'I think we've seen too recently how instrumental the V8 engine is among the Detroit Three's future,' DeGraff continued. 'Ford keeps dumping money into development of it, Stellantis is reviving the Hemi for Ram, and GM can't afford to sit back and let its current crop of V8s age.' When I made the claim before that the V8 is no longer America's truck engine, I got plenty of emails and comments from passionate drivers who insist that it is. Now, it's important to note, I wasn't asserting that based on customer preference but rather on real-life market data. It's clear that some people still want and, indeed, demand V8s in their trucks and SUVs. GM is listening to them, and it will go on providing plenty of options for those folks over the coming years. Ford Recalls 1.1 Million Vehicles Over Faulty Rearview Camera

Ford (F, Financials) is recalling 1,075,299 vehicles in the United States due to a software malfunction that may freeze the rearview camera display, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The issue could distort the driver's view while reversing and increase the risk of a crash. The affected models span the 2021 to 2025 production years and include a wide range of Ford and Lincoln vehicles such as the Bronco, F-150, Mustang, Edge, Expedition, Transit, Mach-E, Escape, Ranger, as well as Lincoln's Navigator, Nautilus, and Corsair. Ford has received one report of a minor crash involving property damage but said no injuries have been reported. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 5 Warning Signs with F. To address the issue, Ford will issue a free software update to affected vehicles, either through a dealership visit or via an over-the-air update. The automaker plans to send initial notification letters to vehicle owners beginning June 16, with a follow-up letter confirming when the remedy is available, expected between July and September. Ford has assigned recall number 25S49 to the case. Owners seeking further information can call Ford at 1-866-436-7332 or visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website at which has listed the recall as number 25V-315. This marks the latest in a series of safety-related recalls for the Detroit automaker. Earlier this year, Ford recalled approximately 274,000 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator vehicles due to improperly installed front brake lines, which could reduce braking performance. In a separate safety development, Ford is also recalling 29,501 F-150 Lightning battery electric trucks from the 2024 and 2025 model years due to a potentially detached control arm that may cause a loss of steering. In November 2024, NHTSA fined Ford $165 million for delays in recalling vehicles with known rearview camera defects and for failing to comply with federal disclosure requirements. Regulators said Ford's failure to provide full information violated the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Act, adding regulatory pressure to the company's recent quality control efforts. Ford Issues Massive Recall for 1.1 Million Vehicles This Week

Ford is recalling 1,075,299 vehicles in the U.S. over a software error that potentially prevents the rearview camera from displaying a proper live feed. More specifically, the rearview camera's images may delay, freeze, or not display at all when affected vehicles are in reverse, according to the NHTSA's report. The recall applies to Ford's 2021-2024 Bronco, F-150, Edge, and 2023-2024 Escape, Corsair, F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, and F-600. The 2022-2024 Expedition, 2022-2025 Transit, 2021-2023 Mach-E, Lincoln Nautilus, 2024 Ranger, Mustang, and the 2022-2024 Navigator are also impacted. A dealer or over-the-air software update will soon solve the problem with the vehicles' accessory protocol interface module (APIM) software, which serves as an operating system for a car's dashboard. This operating system helps a vehicle's infotainment system control programs, including but not limited to apps and navigation maps. There are no warning signs before the described rearview camera problem occurs. Documents related to the issue report that Ford is aware of one minor crash associated with the software problem, resulting in property damage, but no injuries or deaths. The automaker was initially contacted by the NHTSA about the issue in January after receiving three dozen complaints for 2021-2023 Ford F-150 models. Potentially affected owners are scheduled to receive a notice of the recall by mail between May 19 and May 23, whereas dealers were informed of the recall on May 12. Those driving impacted models compatible with over-the-air software updates must be connected to Wi-Fi to successfully complete the remote upgrade or visit a dealer. Ford's recall represented this week's largest recall order, with Toyota coming in second place at 443,444 vehicles. The Michigan-based automaker also leads all manufacturers in 2025 recalls at over 50, and the gap between first and second place is significant, according to CarEdge data. Through May 15, the Volkswagen Group has the second-highest number of recalls in 2025, at 14. General Motors and Stellantis North America are tied for the third-most at 11. Mercedes-Benz and Honda are tied for fourth with 9 recalls through May 15. Stellantis had the most recalls last year at 71. Ford models like the Explorer, Aviator, and Expedition have all undergone seatbelt recalls. The Volkswagen Group had one of the most unique recalls this year when its electric van was recalled due to a third-row bench seat that was deemed too wide for the van's number of seatbelts. Volkswagen dealers are responding by installing trim parts that reduce the rear seat's usable width. While Stellantis dethroned Ford's 2023 position as having the most recalls in 2024, the automaker has recaptured this undesirable status, and the competition isn't even close this year. The Michigan-based automaker has also issued the most recalls out of any manufacturer in history, with the F-150 pickup being the model most associated with its recalls. As bad luck would have it, the truck is yet again making an appearance with its inclusion in the NHTSA's list of vehicles potentially impacted by the rearview camera defect. Have a Ford SUV or truck? These two recalls could affect you

Puskar / AP Photo) Ford has updated two separate recalls over safety concerns about seatbelts and engines, affecting tens of thousands of vehicles nationwide. Transport Canada posted both recall updates on its website Tuesday. Here's what to know: Possible seatbelt problems Expanding on a recall from March 28, Ford says 3,261 SUVs could have a problem with the driver and front-passenger seatbelt pretensioners, a safety feature that tightens the seatbelt in the event of a crash. As a result of the issue, the recall reads, 'the airbag warning light could turn on, and the seatbelt pretensioners could deploy without a crash.' The following models are affected: Ford Expedition (2018, 2019 and 2020) Lincoln Navigator (2018, 2019 and 2020) Malfunctioning pretensioners could increase the risk of injury, and those that improperly deploy could startle the driver, risking a collision, read the notice. Affected owners will receive mail from the company advising them to take their vehicles to a dealership for inspection. Seatbelt retractors may be replaced, as necessary. Ford says certain vehicles repaired under the March 28 recall will also require this fix. Engine concerns Ford has issued an update to a second recall affecting 26,905 trucks and SUVs. This is an update from a recall from two years ago. Certain vehicles equipped with a 2.5 L HEV or PHEV engine may have a manufacturing problem that could lead to engine failure and fire, according to the notice posted on Transport Canada's website. For this issue, Ford will also notify affected owners by mail and advise them to bring their cars to a dealership to possibly update the powertrain control module software, or to replace the engine. 'To reduce the safety risk, Ford recommends that you should shut off the engine as soon as possible if you hear unusual engine noises, see smoke from the engine compartment, or notice reduced engine power,' according to the notice online. The following models are affected: Ford Escape (2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023) Ford Maverick (2022 and 2023) Lincoln Corsair (2021, 2022 and 2023) For more information on both recalls, contact Ford at 1-800-565-3673 or visit its website.
