Minister distributes assistive devices, flags off mobile medical units in Mandya

distributed various departmental benefits on the premises of the zilla panchayat on Wednesday.
Under the department for the empowerment of differently abled and senior citizens, a total of 50 assistive devices were distributed to specially-abled individuals.
These included 13 motorised tricycles, 11 battery-operated wheelchairs, 15 hearing aids, 4 manual wheelchairs, 2 tricycles, 4 crutches, and 2 walkers.
The minister encouraged the recipients to make the best use of the equipment.
To provide health checkups and treatment for construction and other building workers, three Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) vehicles were sanctioned for the district by the Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board.
The minister flagged off these units. Each vehicle will have a team of six members, including a doctor, general nursing and midwifery, ANM (Auxiliary Nurse Midwife), lab technician, assistants, and driver.
These units will travel to locations with a high number of construction workers or as per the department's route map to conduct health checkups and provide necessary treatments to workers and their dependents.
To promote knowledge acquisition among children and the public, the govt launched libraries in an additional 255 villages in the district. Today, the minister symbolically distributed books worth Rs 2 lakh to each of these new libraries. To aid in tax collection at gram panchayats, the zilla panchayat procured 101 Android POS (Point of Sale) machines. The minister handed over these machines to gram panchayat officials and instructed bill collectors to use them efficiently.
The horticulture department will organise a mango and jackfruit fair and plant market 2025 from May 26 to 28 in front of the office of the deputy director of horticulture. The district minister released the event poster. The fair will focus on the sale of naturally ripened, carbide-free mangoes and jackfruits directly from farmers to consumers.

I can say with pride today that Modi, when he became the PM , has fulfilled it by providing 60 crore poor with free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh," Shah said. The Modi government has addressed the problem of health with a holistic view, with initiatives like building toilets in about 12 crore houses, through Fit India movement , Yoga Day, Mission Indradanush and Poshan Abhiyaan, Ayushman Bharat , and Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana, he added. "In a way, it is being ensured that a citizen doesn't fall ill from the time he/she is in the mother's womb until the person becomes a complete citizen, and in case the person is ill, he takes treatment without paying a higher price for it," he added. Major efforts were taken to increase the number of doctors in the country, Shah said. In 2014, the country had 7 AIIMS, and today there are 23 AIIMS, and the number of medical colleges has increased from 387 to 780. "There were 51,000 MBBS seats then (2014), today it is 1,18,000, and the number of PG seats was 31,000, today it is 74,000.," he added.

Chandigarh: Buoyed by signs of a reduction in the tuberculosis (TB) burden, Punjab is now aiming to expand the reach of Nikshay Mitra, a community support initiative that provides nutritional and treatment assistance to TB patients, to further improve treatment outcomes. Nationally, TB prevalence ranges from 137 to 747 cases per lakh population. In Punjab, the prevalence decreased from 314 to 217 cases per lakh, marking a significant step forward in the state's fight against TB. Caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, TB primarily affects the lungs and spreads through the air. It is both preventable and curable. As of now, 28,593 TB patients in Punjab are receiving treatment, and 20,252 of them are enrolled in the Nikshay Mitra programme, which is supported by 792 donors, including corporates, NGOs, institutions, elected representatives, and individuals. From Jan 1 to June 19, 30,106 TB cases were notified—19,539 through public health facilities and 10,567 through private facilities. Ludhiana reported the highest number of cases (6,343), followed by Amritsar (4,325), Jalandhar (3,164), and Patiala (3,027). In addition, private health facilities receive Rs 500 for every TB case reported, along with an additional Rs 500 if the patient's treatment outcome is successfully reported. The govt also provides Rs 500 to non-salaried individuals diagnosed with TB. Dr Rajesh Bhaskar, head, Punjab TB Cell, said that several initiatives are under way to raise awareness about the programme and encourage greater community participation. He also shared that Punjab governor Gulab Chand Kataria instructed all deputy commissioners and civil surgeons to actively reach out to potential donors in their respective districts. A list of local industries and NGOs has been circulated to support this effort, and additional engagement is planned at the state level. To further strengthen TB control efforts, state and district-level strategic intervention plans have been developed under the National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP), targeting high-burden areas. All TB patients are provided free drugs and diagnostic services, and active case-finding campaigns are being conducted among vulnerable and high-risk populations. IIT Guwahati develops mechanism to treat 1,000 litre contaminated water for Rs 20

New Delhi: Researchers at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, have developed a low-cost community scale water treatment system that removes fluoride and iron from groundwater and can treat up to 20,000 litre of contaminated water per day, officials said. The findings of the research have been published in the prestigious ACS ES&T Water journal. The researchers claimed the system was highly affordable and could treat 1,000 litre of water at a paltry Rs 20. According to Mihir Kumar Purkait, Professor at Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Guwahati , fluoride, a mineral generally used in dental care products, pesticides, fertilisers and some industrial processes, can enter groundwater either naturally or through human activities such as agriculture and manufacturing. "Consumption of water with excess fluoride presence can lead to skeletal-fluorosis, a serious health condition in which bones harden and joints become stiff, making physical movement difficult and painful. In India, states including Rajasthan, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Haryana, and Gujarat, among others, face high levels of fluoride in groundwater," Purkait said. The IIT Guwahati research team developed a four-step system that ensures a cost-effective and energy-efficient technology for contaminated water treatment. Purkait said the hydrogen and oxygen bubbles produced during electrolysis interact with air bubbles, assisting in lifting pollutant particles to the surface. The selection of electrode material depends on factors like low cost, low oxidation potential and high electro-positivity after dissolution. "Among available options, aluminum has proven highly effective, particularly in the removal of iron, arsenic, and fluoride under optimal operational conditions," he said. The research team tested the developed system under real-world conditions for 12 weeks and recorded consistent performance. The results have shown removal of 94 per cent iron and 89 per cent fluoride from the wastewater, bringing the levels within safe limits set by Indian standards. "A key feature of the developed system is its cost effectiveness, with Rs 20 per 1,000 liters of treated water, making it highly affordable. The developed technology requires minimal supervision and has a projected lifespan of 15 years with electrode replacement scheduled every six months," he said. The study proposes a method to estimate electrode life using a built-in safety factor to ensure timely maintenance. As a pilot project, in support with the Public Health Engineering Department of Assam, the developed technology has been successfully installed by Kakati Engineering Pvt Ltd in Changsari, Assam. "We are also exploring the use of solar or wind power to operate the unit and to utilise the hydrogen gas generated during electrocoagulation process . By integrating smart technologies such as real-time sensors and automated controls, we will be able to further reduce the need for manual intervention, making the system more effective for remote and underserved areas," he said. The research team also aims to combine the current system with other water treatment methods to enhance performance and provide a decentralised water treatment solution. PTI
