Scientists issue stark warning about crisis looming over islands: 'Already irreversibly lost their natural adaptive capacity'

Scientists have delivered a sobering assessment about the future of low-lying island communities as sea levels continue to rise at an accelerated pace.
According to an article in Yale Environment 360, many atoll islands face an uncertain future, with some having "already irreversibly lost their natural adaptive capacity" due to human interference with their ecosystems.
Atoll islands in the Pacific and Indian Oceans sit only three to 15 feet above sea level and face mounting pressure as sea level rise has more than doubled between 1993 and 2023. According to the Yale Environment 360 report, the sea level is projected to rise between 11 and 40 inches by 2100.
However, the news isn't entirely grim. The report mentioned that "studies of hundreds of atoll islands found that 79 percent to 89 percent were either stable or increased in size in recent decades," with the key difference being ecosystem health.
According to Yale Environment 360, some atolls have lost the ability to generate sediment, and University of Auckland ecologist Sebastian Steibl noted that "they lose the capacity to keep up with sea level rise."
These islands support critical biodiversity and human communities. As Yale Environment 360 noted, despite the atoll islands accounting for only 0.02% of the islands in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, they are "important refuges for a quarter of the world's tropical seabirds, multitudes of nesting sea turtles, and tropical plants," and they are home to many human cultures.
Coral reefs, which naturally produce the sediment that builds and maintains these islands, face increasing stress from rising temperatures. Coastal geographer Virginie Duvat from La Rochelle University warns in the article that polluting gases must be reduced to slow down the deterioration of coral reefs, which are the main source of sediment for islands.
Perhaps most concerning, Duvat explained that nature-based solutions cannot help the most urbanized islands, noting that once engineered approaches like concrete seawalls have been adopted, "these islands have already irreversibly lost their natural adaptive capacity."
Scientists are pioneering nature-based solutions that show remarkable promise. Researchers have discovered that healthy ecosystems create a powerful defense system. When seabird guano makes its way into reefs, its nutrients help to support coral growth and the fish populations, causing guano-fed reefs to grow faster — and produce more sediment.
Conservation efforts are already showing results. At Tetiaroa Atoll, in French Polynesia, conservationists have almost fully eradicated rats and plan to target overpopulated coconut palms with the goal of eliminating 80% to 90%, according to Yale Environment 360.

Research by Ruth Dunn at Lancaster University shows that there is the potential to boost coral growth rates by at least 25% if they are able to restore native vegetation and eliminate rats in the Chagos Archipelago, and the report indicates the islands could become home to "more than 280,000 additional breeding pairs of seabirds."

But new research suggests that having more years between your first period and your last comes with some serious health perks later in life. And it has nothing to do with what's happening below the belt. 4 When women enter menopause, they stop menstruating and can no longer get pregnant naturally. Syda Productions – In the study, University of Auckland researchers analyzed brain scans from more than 1,000 postmenopausal women and spotted a striking pattern. Those who got their first period earlier, went through menopause later or simply had more years in between showed noticeably slower signs of brain aging. 'These findings support the idea that estradiol — the most potent and prevalent form of estrogen during a woman's reproductive years — may help protect the brain as it ages,' said Dr. Eileen Lueders, lead researcher of the study. In animal studies, estradiol has been found to support brain health by enhancing neuroplasticity, reducing inflammation and improving communication between brain cells. 4 Women are disproportionately affected by Alzheimer's disease. kangwan – Estradiol levels fluctuate throughout a woman's life. They rise sharply at puberty, stay high during most of the reproductive years, then drop steeply around menopause. Previous studies have linked that decline in estradiol levels to an increased risk of dementia and other age-related brain conditions. The age you enter menopause is influenced by several factors, including genetics, lifestyle and certain medical conditions. For example, women who smoke may enter menopause earlier, while having multiple pregnancies can delay its onset. 4 The years leading up to menopause are often accompanied by uncomfortable symptoms like hot flashes. Monkey Business – 'As more women weigh the benefits of hormone therapy during menopause, findings like these spark important conversations and open the door to more inclusive, focused research in women's brain health,' said Alicja Nowacka, a PhD student at the University of Auckland who wasn't involved in the study. While the new research adds to the growing evidence that estradiol may help protect brain health, Lueders cautioned that the effects were small and estradiol levels were not directly measured. She also noted that other factors, such as genetics, lifestyle and overall health, can play a role in brain aging. Looking ahead, Lueders is urging future studies to include a more diverse pool of participants and directly measure their hormone levels to better understand how estradiol and other factors impact women's brain health.

A bogus psychiatrist has been ordered to pay back the NHS more than £400,000 or face two-and-a-half more years in prison. Zholia Alemi, 62, was jailed in February 2023 for seven years after she committed a series of fraud offences. Alemi claimed to have qualified at the University of Auckland in New Zealand but a jury at Manchester Crown Court found her guilty of forging the degree certificate and letter of verification she used to register with the General Medical Council in 1995. She moved around England to different posts for more than 20 years to ensure 'the finger of suspicion' did not point at her, the court heard. Alemi worked 'more or less continuously' for NHS trusts and private providers across the UK in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, earning an estimated £1.3 million. This week, a judge ordered her to pay £406,624 in compensation to the NHS or face more time in custody. Adrian Foster, of the Crown Prosecution Service, said: 'We have robustly pursued the proceeds of crime with the NHS Counter Fraud Authority and have identified all the assets that she has available to pay her order. 'Alemi had little regard for patient welfare. She used forged New Zealand medical qualifications to obtain employment as an NHS psychiatrist for 20 years. 'In doing so, she must have treated hundreds of patients when she was unqualified to do so, potentially putting those patients at risk. 'Her fraudulent actions also enabled her to dishonestly earn income and benefits of more than £1 million, to which she was not entitled. 'She cheated the public purse and £406,624 will be paid in compensation to the NHS.' Alemi was convicted at Carlisle Crown Court in 2018 for three fraud offences and a count of theft after trying to forge the will and powers of attorney of an elderly patient. Following her conviction, journalist Phil Coleman, chief reporter for Cumbrian Newspapers, made inquiries into Alemi's background and found she had never completed her qualification, the court was told. His inquiries led to Cumbria police to investigate Alemi's background. Alemi was born in Iran but in the early 1990s was in Auckland, where she failed to complete the degree required to practise as a doctor and was refused permission to resit.
