Lethbridge local wins lottery for the third time in less than a year
David Serkin of Lethbridge has taken home his third large lottery prize in less than a year.
The cancer survivor won $500,000 on the August 20 LOTTO MAX draw, $1 million on the November 16 LOTTO 6/49 draw and most recently $1 million prize on the May 3 LOTTO 6/49 Classic draw, totalling $2.5 million in lottery wins in less than nine months.
He also won a $250,000 lottery prize 12 years ago.
Western Canada Lottery Corp. described this win as rare in a news release, saying the odds of winning the LOTTO MAX jackpot or a MAXMILLIONS prize are both 1 in 33,294,800. The odds of winning the LOTTO 6/49 $5 million Classic Draw are 1 in 13,983,816.
'I know the odds are astronomical,' Serkin told Lotto Spot. 'I don't think it'll happen again, but I still like buying tickets.'
Serkin won his $1 million prize on the May 3 LOTTO 6/49 Gold Ball draw with the selection 24645097-05, a white ball.
The odds for the Gold Ball Draw are determined for each draw by the total number of selections issued across Canada.
He purchased the ticket while buying gas, and seeing the Gold Ball draw getting close to the final ball selection, asked himself 'what do I have to lose?'
He described his family as being in disbelief of the win.
'I went for coffee with the boys after I checked my ticket,' he said. 'They asked to see it and said, 'Not again?!''
Serkin said he took his wife to Hawaii after his last win, and is planning a trip to Newfoundland with his latest prize.
Multiple wins, while unusual, are a well-known phenomenon in lottery play all over the world, according to WCLC spokesperson Emily Olsen.
WCLC reviewed Serkin's recent wins and concluded that they are all legitimate, having purchased his winning tickets four months apart and at different retail locations.
'Since wins occur randomly — without a pattern and by chance — multiple wins are entirely possible and do happen,' Olsen said.
WCLC conducts reviews when unusual occurrences such as Serkin's wins take place. This does not indicate suspicion, but is to demonstrate WCLC's commitment to ensuring the right prize is paid to the right player.
The Lethbridge local has been playing since LOTTO 6/49 launched in 1982. His most recent winning ticket was purchased from Shell Lethbridge at 2440 Fairway Plaza Road S in Lethbridge.
Serkin isn't the only lucky Albertan playing the lottery. The province saw 55 people taking home prizes of $1 million or higher in 2024, totalling $237.3 million.
That compares to 11 winners in both Saskatchewan and Manitoba, where players in there were awarded $17 million and $53 million respectively.
Calgarians took home the most out of the larger prairie cities, ending up with $108.3 million among 22 winners.
The next luckiest were Edmontonians, where 12 jackpot tickets racked up $23 million.
WCLC's largest prize in 2024 — $70 million — was won by Beaverlodge resident Brian Hoover. The second largest prize — $66 million — was won by Calgarian James Jutzi.
Those lopsided windfall results can be attributed to Alberta — and Calgary's — larger populations and a greater tendency for people here to try their luck, said Olsen.
She said 60 per cent of the lottery company's sales are made in Alberta, with 20 per cent each in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
Calgary currently has one unclaimed prize of $1 million from a LOTTO/649 ticket purchased on Aug. 24, 2025 with the winning numbers 26209629-02.

Lotto 6/49: Good Samaritan returns wallet with $1M ticket inside
Mario Raimondi of Winnipeg is $1 million richer, and he has a Good Samaritan to thank for it. After finding out that he won as part of the Gold Ball draw on April 25, he stored his ticket in his wallet. But at some point while Raimondi was out, that wallet, and the $1 million ticket inside, was lost. That's until he received a little bit more good fortune. 'I was lucky enough that someone found it and returned it to me,' said Raimondi, while claiming his prize with the Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC). 'The ticket was still in my wallet when it was returned!' The longtime Lotto 6/49 player says he buys tickets for every draw and usually checks his numbers online. His habit of storing tickets in his wallet nearly cost him this time — but instead, it turned into a story of unexpected kindness. 'I'm taking this as a sign to pay it forward and help someone else out,' said Raimondi. 'My prayers have been answered!' Now that he's officially a millionaire, Raimondi already knows what's first on his shopping list. 'The first thing [on my list] is a new house!' he said. Raimondi purchased his winning ticket at the Red River Co-op at 1600 Regent Avenue West in Winnipeg. His lucky Gold Ball Draw selection — 27966889-01 — landed on a white ball worth $1 million. Lotto 6/49 offers players the chance to win two multi-million-dollar jackpots on every $3 play. The Classic Draw offers a $5 million jackpot every Wednesday and Saturday. The Gold Ball draw, however, is a new format introduced in September 2022, and guarantees a winner every time. It starts at $10 million, and includes 30 balls in the draw: 29 white and 1 gold. Each white ball is worth $1 million, whereas the gold ball represents the lucky jackpot prize. This Gold Ball jackpot continues to grow by $2 million each time a white ball is drawn, until it reaches $68 million with no more white balls remaining — which then guarantees a Gold Ball winner. ‘That person I heard about on the news was me': Ontario man claims $65-million Lotto Max prize
An Etobicoke man is planning a global adventure on some of the most luxurious trains after winning a massive $65-million lottery jackpot. Mohit Sharma has long been enamoured with the world's most famous and luxurious trains. Now, as Ontario's newest multimillionaire, his dreams of riding the rails will soon come true after claiming a Lotto Max jackpot of $65 million from the Oct. 15, 2024 draw. During a winner's celebration hosted by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. (OLG) in Toronto, Sharma noted he started buying lottery tickets in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, giving himself a weekly routine to look forward to during the lockdowns. Setting a budget, he purchased Lotto Max and Lotto 6-49 tickets with Encore each week, using the OLG's quick pick feature. 'I don't pick the numbers, so, knowing that a random number that the lottery computer picked for me the winner — and my name was on that ticket — is just unbelievable,' Sharma said in a news release. Sharma, who works as a consultant, likes to check his lottery tickets soon after the draw. When he heard on the news that the winning Lotto Max ticket was sold in Etobicoke, he rushed to check the tickets he had stored in a drawer. 'The first ticket I scanned was the winner,' Sharma said. 'I couldn't believe it and my heart started pounding. My phone screen lit up as the words 'Big Winner' flashed across the screen I thought to myself, 'I guess that person I heard about on the news was me.'' Sharma was in the middle of cooking when he discovered he'd won the jackpot. In the intensity of the moment, he doesn't know how he had the clarity to turn off the stove before a fire started in his kitchen. Sharma went on a walk to clear his head. When he returned home, he scanned the ticket again, just to make sure he wasn't dreaming. He then began researching how to claim his prize and read about other big lottery winners. Not wanting to cause any anxiety for his family, Sharma decided to wait and tell them about his win in person. When the time finally came, Sharma gathered his family members together for the big reveal. 'To say they were shocked is an understatement,' he said. 'I had to pinch a couple of them to prove it was real. It was an emotional moment with lots of trembling hands and elevated heart rates all around.' Sharma wanted to share the news over a round of champagne, but the family didn't have proper champagne glasses. The only store still open was Walmart. 'So, we ran over to buy champagne glasses, and raised a glass to my good fortune. We finished the bottle together that night,' Sharma added. With the help of a financial team to manage his new-found wealth, Sharma is now planning to travel and take it easy. He's also exploring ways to give back to his community and support causes close to his heart. Sharma loves to read and learn, and is considering going back to school for another degree or diploma. As for rest and relaxation, he intends to tour the globe as a passenger on some of the world's most iconic trains. 'I have dreamt of travelling on these luxurious and exotic trains. I want to go to Japan to experience one of the world's fastest trains, The Shinkansen,' he added. 'I also want to travel on The Indian Pacific that goes from Sydney to Perth, Australia. The famous Orient Express is another on the top of my list, too.' Sharma also plans to see more of Canada aboard The Canadian, from Toronto to Vancouver. In addition, he plans to to ride The Caledonia Sleeper, which criss-crosses the United Kingdom. 'This is what will excite me the most,' he said. Sharma's winning Lotto Max ticket at Lakeshore Mini Mart on Lakeshore Boulevard West in Etobicoke. Error! Sorry, there was an error processing your request. There was a problem with the recaptcha.
