KPWKM provides immediate aid to 10 UPSI students in ICU

PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) will provide RM1,000 each in immediate aid to 10 students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) warded in the intensive care units of two hospitals in Perak.
Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the donations are through Yayasan Kebajikan Negara under the 'Skim Pemberian Ehsan Kepada Keluarga Mangsa'.
She said her deputy, Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad, will visit the affected students on her behalf.
'Eight students are being treated at Taiping Hospital, while two are in Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun, Ipoh,' she told reporters after officiating the Women Seminar 2025 'EmpowerHER: Engage Energise Elevate', here today.
Nancy said the ministry will also look into aid and support for the families of those who lost their lives in the tragedy.
'I think the families need time to grieve as well. It is not just about giving money. What they need most right now is emotional support,' she said, adding that the ministry is ready to offer the services of professional counsellors.
'But we cannot simply show up immediately, people are still devastated,' she said.
The tragic crash occurred between 12.30 am and 1 am yesterday on the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, when a chartered bus carrying UPSI students from Jertih to Tanjung Malim overturned after colliding with a Perodua Alza.
The accident claimed the lives of 15 students and left 33 others injured, including the bus driver, his assistant, and the Alza's driver and three passengers.

Bursa Malaysia, Grab channel zakat to aid 500 kidney patients

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 500 kidney patients from the asnaf group in the Federal Territories will receive RM300 Grab ride vouchers each to help ease transportation to dialysis treatment centres. The RM150,000 contribution was made through wakalah zakat funds from Bursa Malaysia (RM100,000) and Grab Malaysia (RM50,000), under the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP). Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the initiative aims to ease the financial burden of patients who require long-term dialysis treatment. 'With the high cost of transportation, especially for those who need to travel several times a week, this burden can be overwhelming. 'This contribution may not be much, but I hope it can at least help make things easier for the patients so they can focus better on their treatment,' he said at the Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ)-MAIWP Ziarah Kasih programme at the Batu Muda MAIWP-PICOMS Haemodialysis Centre here today. Also present were University College of MAIWP International (UCMI) chief executive officer and vice-chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Noor Inayah Yaakub, Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Fad'l Mohamed and Grab Malaysia country operations and mobility director Rashid Shukor. Meanwhile, Fad'l said the wakalah zakat contribution reflected Bursa Malaysia's commitment to supporting initiatives that bring a positive impact to society. 'We believe a company's success is not only measured by financial performance or operational excellence, but also by its contribution to community wellbeing and sustainability practices,' he said. Fad'l added that the collaboration with PPZ-MAIWP was an example of how zakat could be effectively channelled to ease the burden of the underprivileged. He said Bursa Malaysia would continue to play an active role in leveraging zakat as a social finance tool, while encouraging public-listed companies to give back to the community.

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: The High Court in Melaka has ordered the Melaka United Soccer Association (Musa) to pay nearly RM700,000 following the death of an 18-year-old Australian player who was struck by lightning nine years ago. Stefan Petrovski, an 18-year-old goalkeeper with Melaka United, was hit by lightning while training at the Hang Jebat Stadium on April 3, 2016. He died nearly a month later, on May 1, from brain damage caused by a lack of oxygen. Advertisement His father, Marco Petrovski, sued Musa and 15 of its officials for negligence and failing to provide a safe environment for his son. The family claimed that no automated external defibrillators (AED) were available during training, no doctor was present at the session, and training was not stopped despite rain increasing the risk of lightning. They also said Musa failed to take out a personal accident insurance policy as required by the player's contract. Justice Radzi Abdul Hamid ruled that Musa was negligent and had a duty of care to protect Petrovski as a professional player. The court awarded AU$192,000 (RM528,000) for loss of dependency, RM120,000 for failure to insure the player, and RM50,000 in legal costs. The judge rejected Musa's defence that a panel doctor did not have to be present at training sessions, stating that Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) rules required at least one doctor to be available during both matches and training. 'The defendants contended that under FAM regulations, a doctor does not need to be at the training session,' said Radzi. 'This court disagreed with the defendants' contention… It makes no sense to appoint the doctor who is absent and must be called to the location in the event of a medical emergency. 'The defendants also failed to adequately train their staff to use AED, as well as to respond to cardiac related emergencies, which contributed to Petrovski's death.' Media Prima celebrates staff transformation in Weight Loss Challenge 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: Media Prima Berhad (MPB) celebrated the health achievements of its staff today at the prize-giving ceremony for the MPB Weight Loss Challenge 2025 in Balai Berita Bangsar. The three-month programme, held from Jan 14 to April 14, saw 126 employees from various departments and subsidiaries take part in the wellness initiative, aimed at encouraging healthier lifestyles and building a resilient, energetic workforce. In the male category, Aidi Shamsuddin from the New Straits Times Press (NSTP) emerged as the top winner after shedding 22kg, earning the RM2,000 grand prize, followed by Mohd Shawal Ismail (21.5kg) and Azizulhelmy Mohamad (20.3kg). "It was tough, especially during Hari Raya. I had to control my eating even then, but I managed to reach my target. "I exercised, did strength training, cardio, and watched my diet by increasing protein and cutting carbohydrates," said Aidi. Meanwhile, in the female category, Laila Mohd Zain from the REV Media Group secured first place after losing 16.7kg, followed by Nurul Akmar Razehan Abd Aziz came in second (14.5kg) and Nur Aiza Abd Mutalib third (11.8kg). "The most difficult challenge was the lifestyle change and staying consistent. "It's easy in the first few weeks when you're still excited, but after a month or two, it becomes harder. "Still, my friends and family were really supportive, and that helped me stay motivated," said Laila. Participants were evaluated based on achieving at least a 10 per cent reduction in their starting weight, with the top five in each category receiving cash prizes ranging from RM500 to RM2,000. Mini challenges were also conducted every three weeks between January and March, offering RM200 prizes to the male and female participants who recorded the highest percentage of weight loss in each round. Also present was MPB group chairman Datuk Seri Syed Hussian Aljunid who handed out the prizes to the winners. Programme advisor Dr Rohaya Ramli reminded participants of the bigger picture behind the challenge. "Since 2023, more than half of our population falls into the obesity category. "This is alarming, as obesity is the root cause of many chronic illnesses, including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. "Consistency is key. Health is not a sprint, it's a marathon. Small, steady changes can lead to major improvements over time," said Dr Rohaya. MPB Human Resources Department adviser Nor Arzlin and Dr Rohaya were also recognised for their guidance, encouragement and support throughout the challenge. This challenge marks the sixth time it has been held since 2010 to promote a healthier lifestyle to MPB staff.
