Construction of Melaka Hospital's Women and Children's Block on track

MELAKA: The construction of the Women and Children's Block of the Melaka Hospital is on track despite delays caused by a complicated and lengthy technical process involving various government agencies.
State Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem said that due to the delay, the cost of the project has risen to RM723mil, from the original cost of RM696mil.
"This is a federal government project under the Health Ministry and, certainly, the state government wants this project to be completed within the stipulated period, even earlier if possible, but it must be understood that there are many procedures that need to be followed and passed.
"Currently, the Health Works branch of the Public Works Department (JKR) Headquarters is finalising the Need Statement for this project through a workshop that will be held today and thereafter, the pre-tender process will commence as soon as the Need Statement is finalised," he said when met by reporters at Seri Negeri here on Tuesday (May 20).
He said this in response to a statement by the Opposition Leader in the State Assembly, Dr Mohd Yadzil Yaakub, on the construction of the Women and Children's Block of the Melaka Hospitaln and the need to expedite the project due to the congestion at the Melaka Hospital, where a child who was allegedly delayed in receiving treatment suffered a seizure.
Ngwe said the state government also wants the project, which is expected to start next year and scheduled for completion in 2031, to run smoothly immediately because it does not want the allocation approved in the 2023 Budget in October 2022 to be withdrawn.
"We hope that this project can be completed within five years, but it's important to explain that several factors have contributed to the delays. These include the need to demolish the existing building, which is the Nursing Training Institute, road widening works, the land acquisition process, and obtaining various technical approvals from the Public Works Department, the Ministry of Health and related agencies,' he said.
He said each stage and process requires time, including the two-phase tender exercise, as the government is committed to appointing a contractor with proven capability and quality to implement the project. - Bernama

IPOH: The Perak state government aims to include a comprehensive upgrade of the East-West Highway in the upcoming 13th Malaysia Plan, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad. The Perak Mentri Besar said that the proposal is essential and discussions with the Public Works Department are underway, as the state believes patching the 40-year-old highway is no longer sufficient. We will send an official letter once the state executive councillor obtains accurate data and technical input from JKR, as this is a technical matter,' he said. Saarani added that the state executive councillor in charge of health is also asked to prepare a formal application to the Health Ministry to upgrade the hospital and medical facilities in Gerik. He said due to frequent accidents along the highway, Gerik Hospital has become a critical facility and needs adequate specialists and infrastructure. 'This is very important, otherwise, accident victims have to be transported to Taiping or Ipoh. 'If Gerik Hospital is sufficiently upgraded with the necessary facilities and expertise, it would be enough to treat those patients there. 'Sometimes it takes around two hours to travel from Gerik to Ipoh, and the same to Taiping. 'If the injury is severe, immediate treatment in Gerik would be sufficient if it has the proper equipment and specialists,' he said. Asked if there was any timeframe given to both the state executive councillors, Saarani answered no. On June 9, 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students were killed after a bus crashed on the highway.

Kelantan Records Decline In Dengue Cases, Wolbachia Mosquito Release Shows Results

KOTA BHARU, June 20 (Bernama) -- The number of dengue fever cases in Kelantan dropped by 12.5 percent, with 875 cases recorded in the first half of this year compared to 1,000 cases during the same period last year, said State Health director Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin. However, he noted that the number of dengue outbreaks rose to 66 from 50 in the same period, although no fatalities were reported. 'This year, there have been no dengue hotspot localities in Kelantan. The current trend remains low, with 17 cases reported in epidemiological week 24. 'Kelantan currently ranks ninth among Malaysian states with the highest number of dengue cases,' he told Bernama at the Gotong-Royong Mega Perangi Aedes 1.0 launch and release of Wolbachia-infected Aedes mosquitoes, officiated by state executive councillor for Local Government, Housing, Health and Environment, Hilmi Abdullah. Dr Zaini also reported that 180,414 premises have been inspected for Aedes mosquito breeding grounds in Kelantan as of mid-June this year, resulting in 501 compounds issued, amounting to RM250,000. He said a total of 73,900 Wolbachia-infected Aedes mosquitoes have been released in Pondok Terusan, Pasir Tumboh, and Kubur Maras, Kota Bharu in 2021, and in Bandar Baru Kubang Kerian today. He noted that no dengue cases have been reported in Pondok Terusan since the release, compared to 134 cases over the previous five years. 'In Kubur Maras, only two dengue cases have been recorded, one each in 2023 and 2024, compared to 81 cases in the five years before 2021,' he said. Dr Zaini added that the Ministry of Health (MOH) has spent an estimated RM705,500 over the past four years on dengue control efforts in Pondok Terusan and Kubur Maras.
