Trade unions must be more proactive in safeguarding workers' welfare, says Melaka CM
ALOR GAJAH: Trade unions in Melaka have been urged to take a more proactive role in protecting the welfare of their members across various sectors by leveraging initiatives and programmes available at both the federal and state levels. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said that at the same time, workers are encouraged to join unions registered under the Trade Union Affairs Department, noting that this would help ensure their voices are heard and their rights protected under the Trade Union Act 1959. "Joining a union is a personal choice, but it is the union that safeguards workers' rights - rights that individuals may not always be aware of. "By becoming members, workers gain access to protection and a second opinion before any action is taken. "As for the trade unions, I hope they will continue to play an effective role in protecting the welfare of their members," he said at a press conference after officiating the department's corporate social responsibility programme with the Melaka community at Villa d'Acqua, Kampung Pulau, here on Saturday (June 14). Also present were the representative of the Minister of Human Resources, Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen; state Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem; and Trade Union Affairs Department director-general Mohd Asri Abdul Wahab. He said that to date, nearly 28 main trade unions and 41 branches in the state are registered under the department, representing over 60,000 members. Earlier during the programme, 21 trade unions in Melaka had their applications approved and will receive grant assistance amounting to RM359,998 under the Union Affairs Development Grant. - Bernama

Melaka Covid-19 cases surge by over 20pct
AYER KEROH: Melaka recorded a surge in Covid-19 cases, with a rise of more than 20 per cent in new infections during Epidemiological Week 23 (ME 23), from June 1 to 7. State Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem said a total of 93 new cases were reported, up from 77 the previous week. He said the increase brought the cumulative number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Melaka to 164,821. "However, no deaths or admissions to the intensive care unit (ICU) have been reported. "As of Saturday, there were also no active clusters recorded either within or outside the state," he said in a statement today. Ngwe said as of ME 23, Melaka had recorded 1,545 cases of Covid-19 variants categorised as Variants of Concern (VOC) and Variants of Interest (VOI). This included seven cases of the Beta VOC, 144 Delta VOC cases, 1,276 Omicron VOC cases, and 79 VOI cases. "The State Health Department will continue to monitor the transmission of the virus, and preventive and control measures will be carried out continuously with the support and cooperation of various agencies," he said.

Construction of Melaka Hospital's Women and Children's Block on track
MELAKA: The construction of the Women and Children's Block of the Melaka Hospital is on track despite delays caused by a complicated and lengthy technical process involving various government agencies. State Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem said that due to the delay, the cost of the project has risen to RM723mil, from the original cost of RM696mil. "This is a federal government project under the Health Ministry and, certainly, the state government wants this project to be completed within the stipulated period, even earlier if possible, but it must be understood that there are many procedures that need to be followed and passed. "Currently, the Health Works branch of the Public Works Department (JKR) Headquarters is finalising the Need Statement for this project through a workshop that will be held today and thereafter, the pre-tender process will commence as soon as the Need Statement is finalised," he said when met by reporters at Seri Negeri here on Tuesday (May 20). He said this in response to a statement by the Opposition Leader in the State Assembly, Dr Mohd Yadzil Yaakub, on the construction of the Women and Children's Block of the Melaka Hospitaln and the need to expedite the project due to the congestion at the Melaka Hospital, where a child who was allegedly delayed in receiving treatment suffered a seizure. Ngwe said the state government also wants the project, which is expected to start next year and scheduled for completion in 2031, to run smoothly immediately because it does not want the allocation approved in the 2023 Budget in October 2022 to be withdrawn. "We hope that this project can be completed within five years, but it's important to explain that several factors have contributed to the delays. These include the need to demolish the existing building, which is the Nursing Training Institute, road widening works, the land acquisition process, and obtaining various technical approvals from the Public Works Department, the Ministry of Health and related agencies,' he said. He said each stage and process requires time, including the two-phase tender exercise, as the government is committed to appointing a contractor with proven capability and quality to implement the project. - Bernama

Melaka Eyes 300,000 Indonesian Medical Tourists This Year
GENERAL MELAKA, May 18 (Bernama) -- Melaka is targeting about 300,000 Indonesians to receive healthcare services at four private hospitals in the state this year, as part of efforts to boost its medical tourism sector. State Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem said that of the 800,000 Indonesians who visited Malaysia for medical treatment and check-ups last year, over 25 per cent were treated in Melaka. He added that various efforts were being actively undertaken to promote the services offered by the four private hospitals in the state, aiming to attract medical tourists from Indonesia, particularly from Pekanbaru. 'Last year, I was told that Mahkota Medical Centre received around 95,000 foreign patients, including from Indonesia, representing over 10 per cent of Indonesians who sought medical services in Malaysia. 'Recently, I joined the Putra Specialist Hospital team in Pekanbaru to promote its medical services, in collaboration with the city's deputy mayor,' he said when met by reporters at the opening ceremony of the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) programme for the Sungai Udang state constituency here today. Ngwe said private hospitals in Melaka were a preferred choice among Indonesians due to the lower cost of healthcare services compared to those in the republic and the state was conveniently located near Sumatra. He said that, based on records, most patients were from Bengkalis and Dumai, travelling via ferry services. Meanwhile, Ngwe said there had been a request for Melaka to resume flight services between Melaka International Airport (LTAM) in Batu Berendam and Pekanbaru. 'The request was made during a meeting with Pekanbaru leaders earlier this week. I have invited the Pekanbaru mayor and the Riau governor to Melaka to meet with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh to discuss the matter.

"I was devastated," says mother of toddler who had seizure after long hospital wait
MELAKA: "I was devastated. It felt like my child's life was being treated as if it didn't matter," said Siti Aishah Rahim, whose toddler daughter allegedly suffered a seizure after waiting nearly 11 hours for treatment at Hospital Melaka's emergency department. The 27-year-old said her daughter, aged one year and ten months, developed a high fever and was taken to the hospital's Emergency and Trauma Department last Saturday at around 2.30pm. Despite a blood sample being taken upon arrival, Siti Aishah claimed no further checks were made, even as her daughter's temperature climbed to 40 degrees Celsius. The care provided while her child was in the green zone was lacklustre and authorities showed little concern for her daughter's deteriorating condition, she said. "I wouldn't have minded if there had been some response, but no nurse or assistant came to check on my child or even asked about her condition or checked her temperature. "Thankfully, I brought a digital thermometer from home and checked her myself. When I saw the reading, I sponged her body repeatedly in the toilet while waiting to be called for treatment," she said when contacted. Siti Aishah said her child only received urgent care after she began convulsing around 1am the next day. The child has since been diagnosed with an adenovirus infection — a virus that affects the lungs, digestive tract, and eyes. Siti Aishah said her daughter has yet to fully recover and remains weak and inactive. Antibiotics have been prescribed as part of her treatment. "The hospital director and Melaka Health Department officials visited us this morning. They apologised and promised to investigate. I'm now waiting for an official response to the complaint I submitted," she said. Siti Aishah who shared details and a video of the incident on Facebook, said she wanted to raise awareness so no other child would suffer a similar fate. Meanwhile, state Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem said he had instructed the Melaka Health Department director to conduct an immediate investigation. "I have already contacted the state health director (Dr Ruzita Mustaffa) and asked for an urgent investigation. "This matter has not been fully investigated yet, so we don't know the cause. I will update the media once the findings are available," he said when contacted.
