"We want to win the marathon" – Guardians' manager explains why he is prioritizing long-term strategy over short-term win
The Cleveland Guardians are struggling to score runs, but manager Stephen Vogt sticks to his plan. In a Cleveland.com interview, he shared why he rests key players like Steven Kwan and Carlos Santana.
His focus is on keeping the team strong for the whole MLB season. Here is a close look at Vogt's rest strategy and the team's offensive issues.
Stephen Vogt's rest strategy explained
Stephen Vogt believes giving his top players a break is important, even when the team is losing. He plans lineups five or six games ahead, thinking about matchups and player health, but doesn't let recent losses change his decisions.
In the Cleveland.com interview, he said,
'It's hard to give your everyday players a day off, but you have to stay diligent to it because it's a marathon.
I try not to let our won-loss record affect that because you have to stick to those plans. If you start chasing every single day, then the plan's not going to work because you're never going to end up giving anybody a day off … We want to win the marathon. We're here to get into the playoffs and win the World Series.'
This is why he rested Kwan and Santana in games against the Yankees and Astros. Even after a 0-4 loss to the Yankees and two close losses to the Astros, Vogt keeps his eyes on the playoffs.

Offensive woes raise concerns
The Guardians' offense is in a slump, scoring just 2.5 runs per game in June, down from 4.3 in May. That makes them one of the worst teams in the American League this month which is a big problem. In their last game against the Astros they were 1-10 with runners in scoring position and left 12 on base.
Vogt's decisions like resting Jose Ramirez and starting Will Wilson at 3B haven't paid off yet. They've lost 3 in a row including 4-2 and 5-3 to the Astros. As the season goes on finding the balance between resting players and scoring runs is key for the Guardians' playoff hopes. They need their bats to come alive soon to turn it around and stay in the hunt.

NBA-Walter's deep pockets could fuel Lakers return to glory
By Rory Carroll Billionaire Mark Walter 's purchase of a majority stake in the Los Angeles Lakers , in a deal that values the team at $10 billion, adds another glittering asset to his sports portfolio and could usher in another championship era for the National Basketball League franchise. The Buss family, the longest-tenured owners in the NBA , is entering into an agreement to make the sale to Walter, ESPN reported on Wednesday, in what would be the largest-ever sale of a professional sports team. The Lakers have yet to confirm the deal. Walter, 65, is the CEO of holding company TWG Global and financial services firm Guggenheim Partners, and LA sports fans do not need to look far to see the impact his mighty checkbook can have on a franchise. Walter, along with a group that included Lakers legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson, purchased the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2012 for $2.15 billion in what at the time was an MLB record. Under his ownership, the Dodgers have made 12 straight playoff appearances, won two championships, including last season's World Series and added generational talents Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Shohei Ohtani. 'ECSTATIC' Johnson, a Hall of Famer who won five NBA titles with the Lakers, said fans should be "ecstatic" about Iowa native Walter becoming the team's next owner. "A few things I can tell you about Mark - he is driven by winning, excellence, and doing everything the right way," Johnson said in a post on X on Wednesday. The reported $10 billion valuation of the Lakers was eyebrow-raising, especially after their historic rivals the Boston Celtics sold for $6.1 billion in April. But it was not a surprise that Walter would be on the other side of the deal. He has been a stakeholder in the team since 2021. Walter's net worth is estimated at $12.5 billion by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Unlike Major League Baseball, the NBA has a salary cap. Still, there are plenty of ways for a deep-pocketed owner to use his money to the team's advantage, from developing players to hiring the best staff. The Lakers have 17 NBA titles, with the latest one coming in 2020. That is second only to the Celtics who have 18, including in 2024. In addition to his ownership of the Dodgers, Walter is also co-owner of the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks, Premier League side Chelsea FC and, through TWG Motorsports, owns Cadillac Formula One team, which will debut next year. His other financial interests include international women's tennis competition the Billie Jean Cup and the Professional Women's Hockey League, which named its championship trophy the "Walter Cup" after him and his wife Kimbra. Walter's growing footprint in the Los Angeles sports scene comes at a time when the Southern California city is preparing to play a key role in hosting FIFA World Cup matches next summer. Dodger Stadium will host baseball and softball competitions during the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, while the Lakers' home of Arena in downtown LA will serve as the venue for gymnastics and boxing.

Yankees activate Luke Weaver after the right-hander missed two weeks with a strained left hamstring
Jun 21, 2025 12:51 AM IST NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees activated right-handed reliever Luke Weaver from the injured list Friday after he missed two weeks with a strained left hamstring. HT Image Weaver was injured warming up before a June 1 game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. After being placed on the injured list, the Yankees thought Weaver might be out until early July or through the All-Star break. Instead, Weaver began feeling better quickly and said the pain disappeared shortly after the injury. He took his final steps in his rehab by throwing a simulated game on Tuesday after throwing side sessions. Weaver has a 1.05 ERA with eight saves in nine opportunities in 24 appearances. He ascended into the closer's role by converting six saves in seven chances after Devin Williams posted an 11.25 ERA in his first 10 appearances and was removed from that spot on April 27. A 31-year-old right-hander who can become a free agent this autumn, Weaver supplanted Clay Holmes as closer last September. From May 20-22, Weaver became the first Yankees pitcher to appear on three consecutive regular-season days since Aroldis Chapman in September 2021, though Weaver's first outing in that stretch lasted just two pitches, and the three totaled 18. Williams converted all four save chances while Weaver was injured and has a 1.76 ERA in his last 16 appearances since May 5. The Yankees cleared room for Weaver by optioning Jayvien Sandridge to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes/Barre. Sandridge was called up Thursday when Yerry De los Santos went on the injured list with right elbow discomfort. ___ AP MLB:

What led Laura Okmin to leave Fox after 23 years? The voice NFL fans knew for decades now says goodbye to the sidelines
Laura Okmin exits Fox Sports after 23 years (Fox Sports/X) After more than two decades of standing on NFL sidelines and telling the game's stories with grace, Laura Okmin has decided to take her final bow at FOX Sports. A seasoned voice in sports broadcasting, Okmin leaves behind a remarkable legacy after 23 impactful years with the network—making her the third-longest-tenured sideline reporter in NFL history. Laura Okmin bids farewell to FOX Sports after 23 years Laura Okmin's journey at FOX began in 2002, but her career had already been shaped by prior roles with CNN, TNT Sports, and SportsChannel in Chicago. Over the years, Okmin built a résumé that most sports journalists only dream of, having covered more than 20 Super Bowls, the Olympics, NBA Finals, World Series, and Stanley Cup Playoffs. However, what set her apart was not just the sheer volume of her experience—but the heart with which she reported each story. In a heartfelt conversation with Front Office Sports, Okmin revealed that her departure wasn't a forced decision but rather an intentional one, guided by inner clarity. 'They sent me the contract. I printed it out. I sat there. It was just my voice saying, 'It's time; this is it,'' she shared. The moment she broke the news to FOX executive Jacob Ullman—who is also a longtime friend—was emotional. 'I'm happy to say he was very surprised. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's The Price for a 1-Day Walk-in Shower In 2025 Homebuddy Learn More Undo I would have been very disappointed if there was any other reaction. It was a really nice call, because I got to have it with my boss and my friend.' While she's walking away from FOX, she's far from done. Okmin will continue to lend her voice to NFL playoff games and the Super Bowl through Westwood One Radio. But what truly excites her now is the opportunity to grow her passion project—GALvanize, a platform she founded to uplift and mentor young women aspiring to break into the sports industry. GALvanize isn't just a training program—it's a movement that stems from Okmin's own experiences in a male-dominated industry. Her mission is simple yet profound: to provide young women with something she never had—a support system. Through workshops, seminars, and boot camps, GALvanize aims to equip participants with confidence, storytelling skills, and above all, empowerment. 'Training and mentoring young women entering the sports world on – and more importantly – OFF camera,' is how her website captures the essence of the program. Reflecting on her long career, Okmin was candid about the challenges of constantly proving her worth. 'Honestly, it's a tough job having to justify your job for 20 years... There's a wonderfulness that comes with it. But also a lot of other ----.' That honesty is what endeared her to so many fans and colleagues. As FOX Sports sees a reshuffle in its sideline lineup—with Erin Andrews and Charissa Thompson also expected to exit—Okmin's absence will certainly be felt. But in stepping away from the camera, she's stepping into a purpose that may impact the next generation even more profoundly.
