Eurovision Organisers Confirm Spanish Broadcaster Was Spoken To Over Pro-Palestine Message

Eurovision bosses have confirmed that Spain's national broadcaster was spoken to after a political message that it chose to air before this year's broadcast.
On Saturday night, the 69th Eurovision Song Contest was held in Basel, Switzerland, with the competition once again sparking controversy in the lead-up due to Israel's involvement, amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Before the live broadcast, Spain's national broadcaster RTVE displayed a black-and-white message in both Spanish and English, which read: 'When human rights are at stake, silence is not an option. Peace and Justice for Palestine.'

Severalnewsoutlets subsequently reported that RTVE was potentially at risk of a fine over this message, due to Eurovision's strict rules about political messaging.
HuffPost UK contacted the European Broadcasting Union on Monday, who declined to comment, but did say that it had spoken to RTVE regarding this, and had reminded them of the rules around neutrality.
Slovenia and Spain were the first two countries whose national broadcasters raised questions to the EBU about Israel's participation in Eurovision 2025.
After Iceland and Ireland became the third and fourth, an EBU rep said that conversations would be had with its member broadcasters about Israel's involvement in the contest – albeit only when this year's event was over.
Prior to the contest, more than 70 musicians and performers associated with Eurovision – including multiple former winners – also co-signed an open letter urging producers to remove Israel from the contest, similar to how Russia was banned from competing in light of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
These calls were then backed by then-reigning champion Nemo, who told HuffPost UK in an exclusive interview: 'Israel's actions are fundamentally at odds with the values that Eurovision claims to uphold – peace, unity and respect for human rights.'
Israel wound up finishing in second place at this year's Eurovision behind Austria's JJ, with its representative Yuval Raphael landing the highest number of points from televoters.

Resistance to tyranny, suspicion of concentrated power, and a firm belief in the democratic ideals that birthed this republic. It's a noble struggle. But for all their passion and theatrical flair, the historical literacy behind the 'No Kings Since 1776' slogan leaves much to be desired. In fact, the protestors missed the mark by several centuries. Yes, the U.S. declared independence from the British Crown in 1776. But the kind of 'king' these protesters seem to fear had already ceased to exist in Britain long before that. By the time George III ascended the throne, British kings were largely figureheads, bound by constitutional limits and dependent on Parliament to govern. The Glorious Revolution of 1688 had already drastically curtailed the powers of the monarchy. And indeed, if you want to pinpoint when monarchs lost their teeth, you need to look even further back, to 1215, when rebellious English barons forced King John to sign the Magna Carta. That document didn't create democracy, but it did begin a centuries-long process of transferring power away from the crown and into the hands of parliaments and assemblies. So, by the time the American colonies revolted, they were not really rising up against a tyrannical king, but against an unresponsive and overreaching Parliament. The rallying cry of the American Revolution — 'No taxation without representation' — wasn't an anti-monarchist slogan. It was an anti-parliamentarian slogan. The colonists didn't object to authority per se — they objected to being taxed and ruled by a body in which they had no voice. And they weren't demanding the abolition of kingship. They were demanding accountability, proportionality, and representation. They were asking for a seat at the table. Fast-forward to today, and that slogan might resonate more than ever. We don't live under a king, but we do live under a political system that often behaves as if it's immune to public influence. Our Congress — designed to be the voice of the people and a check on executive power — is frequently in lockstep with the president, regardless of which party is in office. Whether through partisan loyalty or political cowardice, our legislators often abdicate their role as a balancing force. They don't deliberate. They defer. They don't question. They rubber-stamp. The real issue isn't kingship but representation. And in the absence of real legislative independence, the presidency has become more monarchical than anything George III ever imagined. And this didn't start in 2025 or even in 2017. Every American president in modern history has wielded powers the British monarch couldn't have dreamed of: Executive orders, foreign military interventions without Congressional approval, surveillance regimes, and massive influence over the national budget. If protesters truly want to challenge creeping authoritarianism, the more accurate message would be: 'No taxation without genuine representation.' That would strike at the heart of the issue. If Congress does not act independently, if it does not reflect the interests and concerns of the people, then we are not truly being represented. And if we are not being represented, then why are we funding the machine? Of course, no one is seriously proposing that Americans stop paying taxes overnight. Civil disobedience has its limits. But protest must have a point, and slogans must have meaning. A movement that aims to hold power accountable must aim at the right target. 'No Kings' is, at best, historically inaccurate, and at worst, a distraction from the deeply rooted, troubling democratic predicament in which we find ourselves. A government system that would have the Founding Fathers turning in their graves. Imagine if all that energy, creativity, and public spirit were channeled instead into a campaign to restore Congressional independence, to demand term limits, to break the iron grip of lobbyists, to push for electoral reform, or to hold legislators to account for every vote they cast. That would be a revolution worth marching for. So, to the protesters in the streets: your instincts are right. Power must be kept in check. But your history is off, and your slogan is weak. Don't fear a king who never ruled you. Fear a Congress that no longer represents you. Daniel Friedman is professor of political science at Touro University.

In 2002, Mark Raimondi was waiting for his breakfast in a restaurant in Tokyo. As he waited, the local man serving the food spotted the black hoodie he was wearing, adorned with the logo of the New World Order (nWo), the 1990s movement that revolutionized pro-wrestling, and simply smiled at him. 'He didn't speak English and I can't speak any Japanese, but we were able to connect through memories that meant something to both of us,' he recalls. 9 Pro-wrestlers Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and Hulk Hogan became household names as part of pro-wrestling's New World Order, which became a '90s pop-culture phenomena whose influence transcended far outside the competition ring. Getty Images In the late 1990s the fierce competition between rival pro-wrestling organizations the World Wrestling Federation (now known as WWE) and World Championship Wresting reached its zenith, as their events went head-to-head on live television and each tried to outdo the other with increasingly spectacular stunts and controversial storylines. Advertisement The resulting surge in popularity and unprecedented mainstream attention was largely down to the emergence of an outrageous new faction in the WCW — the New World Order. Conceived by WCW senior vice president Eric Bischoff, it featured former WWF wrestlers Scott Hall and Kevin Nash and a mysterious 'third man,' later revealed to be another ex-WWF wrestler, the legendary Hulk Hogan. Rebellious and edgier than their counterparts, the New World Order were portrayed as outsiders, a band of unsanctioned invaders intent on taking over the WCW with the key storyline being Hogan 'turning heel' and switching from good guy to one of the baddies. 9 The New World Order singlehandedly reinvigorated professional wrestling and helping to turn it into the multi-billion dollar entertainment machine it is today. Advertisement 'That's where the nWo was born, at the intersection of genuine and phony. Lines became blurred. The antiheroes became the main characters,' says Raimondi. 'And pro wrestling was never the same again.' Nothing was off limits for the nWo. They even used storylines based on Hall's chaotic private life. Advertisement A self-destructive character, he often drove drunk and had totaled eight Cadillacs in just a few years and now it was all part of the act. 'He started stumbling to the ring holding a cocktail cup, acting like he was drunk on television,' adds Raimondi. 'Or maybe he actually was drunk. At that point, it hardly mattered.' Getty Images 'The idea of the antihero being the protagonist wasn't an especially new one in the entertainment industry,' says Raimondi. 'But the nWo hit in such a formative time and was consumed by millions of people every week.' Being in the nWo gave Hulk Hogan's career a much-needed boost, too. When he first left the WWF in 1993, the wrestler's popularity had plummeted, not least because he had admitted to taking steroids. Now though, he was once again in the good graces of the nation's wrestling fans. 'The boos and indifference toward Hulkamania were gone. It was running wild again,' says Raimondi. Advertisement 'All it took was Hogan to be a dastardly son of a bitch for several years before fans wanted to see the old him again.' With their distinctive black and white branding and anti-establishment personas, the impact of then nWo's arrival was so significant that soon the WWF would follow suit. Getty Images For author Raimondi, the burgeoning popularity of wrestling at the time was part of a wider cultural shift in the late '90s, when a wave of pseudo-reality shows like The Jerry Springer Show and The Real World pushed the limit of credulity to great success. Advertisement 'Like wrestling, few really believed everything happening on Springer or Real World was completely on the up-and-up,' he writes. 'Yet, people watched anyway — at a high rate ­— and bought in, to an extent, to their staged realities. 'Almost everyone has been aware for decades that pro wrestling isn't a legitimate sports competition, but Robert Downey Jr. isn't actually Iron Man, either.' 9 Rapper Kendrick Lamar has reference the New World Order in lyrics to songs related to his 'beef' with Drake. AP Wrestling's surge also came at a crucial moment for network television as the expansion of cable meant an increased demand for entertaining and low-cost programming. 'Talk-show guests and reality television contestants came much cheaper than actors,' adds Raimondi. Advertisement 'So did pro wrestlers.' Today, the success of the New World Order and the transformative effect it had on the fortunes of both pro-wrestling organizations continues to permeate all aspects of modern life. President Trump, for instance, hosted an episode of Wrestlemania and once shaved the WWE owner Vince McMahon's head in the ring. More recently, Trump even appointed McMahon's wife Linda, a former CEO of WWE, as the secretary of education. 9 Pres. Trump with Linda McMahon, now US Secretary of Education. REUTERS Advertisement Dwayne Johnson, a former wrestler whose daughter is now in WWE, is now the highest-paid actor in the world and one of most recognizable people on the planet. In music you would be hard pressed to find a hip-hop artist who has never rapped a lyric about pro-wrestling. Kendrick Lamar, for instance, used the line 'sweet chin music,' in his definitive Drake diss track 'Not Like Us,' a reference to the finishing move of WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels. In 2017, meanwhile, influencer Kendall Jenner even rocked an oversized nWo logo shirt at a Michael Kors show during New York fashion week. 'To understand pro wrestling is to understand America itself,' writes Raimondi. 'It's capitalism, it's materialism. It's bombast. A wrestling program is like a TikTok algorithm come to life.' Almost inevitably, the success of nWo and the WCW meant that WWF — the bigger of the two operations — began to eye its competitor and in March 2001 bought out its rival, acquiring all of the organization's assets for $4.2 million. Now, the nWo was living on borrowed time. While Hogan, Hall and Nash briefly rehashed their act in WWF — and new members of the faction came and went — Vince McMahon announced that the New World Order had been disbanded on July 15, 2002, during an episode of 'Raw.' While the nWo was no more, the founders could at least take comfort from the impact they had, both in the wrestling ring and outside it. 'The nWo was more than just a wrestling faction; it was a cultural phenomenon that redefined the landscape of professional wrestling,' adds Raimondi. 9 Author and former ESPN journalist Marc Raimondi. And while Kevin Nash and Hulk Hogan are still here to tell their story, the other founding member, Scott Hall, passed away in March 2022, after he suffered three heart attacks as a result of a blood clot that developed after a hip operation. He was 63. Prior to his death, when Hall was first inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, he gave a speech explaining what being a member of the New World Order had meant to him. 'Hard work pays off — dreams come true,' he said. 'Bad times don't last. But Bad Guys do.'

What do you get when you combine the soaring soprano stylings of Maria Callas, the drama of '90s divas like Celine and Whitney, and the bass-heavy, brat-pop chaos of Charli XCX? You get a winning Eurovision song. JJ, Austria's newly crowned champion of the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest, brought all of that and more with his electrifying song "Wasted Love". Euronews Culture caught up with the rising star to unpack the whirlwind of the final - from early morning rehearsals to the surreal moment his name was announced as the winner. The 24-year-old singer also reflects on his musical upbringing between karaoke nights and classical symphonies, and shares what's next for his music career now that the trophy is his. How have things been? JJ: Yeah good. Very busy. I've been traveling around a lot, but I'm enjoying every moment. It's so fun. Please walk us through the day of your Eurovision win, from waking up to taking home the trophy. So I woke up, I think, around 7:30 because we had to leave at 8 to head to the arena. Once we got there, we did a bit of press, then hair and makeup, and had a rehearsal in one of the vocal warm-up rooms. We went through the song once or twice - kind of like a performance run-through, including how I would move on stage. Then we had the family show, which I think started at 1 PM. That was basically the dress rehearsal for the evening show. It was fun, and the crowd was already wild. They were so loud - it was just an insane feeling. We also rehearsed the flag parade, and then I got to perform. While I was sitting there, I just thought, 'Okay, you just have to perform now. Tonight, soak in the moment, because this is the last time you're going to be on that stage." And yeah, it was so fun. I could really feel the energy of the crowd. After I came off stage, we did a bit more press - lots of interviews and TikToks and things like that. Then I took a one-hour nap because I needed some rest. Then it was the same thing again: waking up, having what I'd call a late lunch or early dinner, vocal warm-up, and then the show started. It became a routine by then - my semi-final was on Thursday, so I had the same schedule from Thursday to Saturday. During the final I thought I felt really present, but looking back now, it all feels like a blur because everything happened so fast - I didn't even have time to process it. When I finally had a bit of downtime before my nap, that's when I could actually reflect on what just happened. But overall, it was such a fun experience. And the more I think back, the more memories come up. I'll be like, 'Oh yeah, that happened too.' How did it feel when your name was announced as the winner? That was just crazy. We'd been there all day, and the three-hour show felt so long. I was really glad I performed early because then I could just watch my friends and cheer them on. But the waiting part felt endless. When they finally announced '178,' my team and I were freaking out. There's a video on social media where you can see them flinging me around like I was a fidget toy before pushing me toward the stage. It was all such a blur - so much happened at once. I was full of adrenaline and emotion - I felt every emotion you could think of. And yeah, I was just constantly sobbing. What did you do the night after winning? I performed again, then had to stay on stage for more interviews and official portraits. After that, we went to the press conference at the media center in Basel. I got back to the hotel at 3:30 AM, where I saw my sister and all the other delegations. We had a huge party in the hotel lobby until about 6 AM. So yeah, it was a long night! Where is the trophy going to go? Good question - I have no idea yet. So far, it's just been in my room. But I think we have a glass cabinet in the living room where we keep my grandmother's trophies. I think we'll just make space and put it next to hers. It's really heavy, and I don't have a suitcase for it, so I have to be careful. I don't want a NEMO experience - you know, they had a rough time with theirs breaking. Tell us a bit about your musical background. Can you remember when you first fell in love with music? That was in Dubai, where I grew up. We had karaoke parties every weekend at home - my family would invite friends and relatives. The first karaoke song I learned was 'Because of You' by Kelly Clarkson. Big song... Yeah, crazy, right? For a six-year-old to try and learn that! But it was fun. That was the first time I consciously learned a song. Then the next morning, my dad showed my siblings and me Beethoven - his symphonies - as well as Bach and Mozart. That's when my love for classical music began to grow too. So I basically grew up between both musical worlds, and my love for it just kept expanding. Any other influences that inspire you most? Yeah - Mariah Carey was a big influence. But really, the '90s divas - Celine, Whitney - they were a huge part of my life. My older sister and my mom loved listening to them, so I got a lot of inspiration through them. And I also listened to the radio a lot. I loved Ariana Grande too. So I'd say I'm a mix. And now, especially with the electronic side, my love for Charli XCX has grown even more -especially with her brat album. How did the operatic style come in? Did you learn that formally at school, or…? After going through puberty, I realised that I still had a high singing voice, and I thought it would be a cool party trick to imitate a soprano - like, 'Let's just sing high notes!' So. I started teaching myself by listening to audio recordings of Maria Callas and Montserrat Caballé on YouTube. Since I love imitating voices and sounds, I tried to recreate how they projected their voices. That's how I started learning to sing classically. Later, I got into university and began studying professional vocal technique. So your winning-song "Wasted Love" - it obviously starts as an operatic ballad and then takes off into techno banger. When you were writing the song, how did that idea come about? Did you always know you wanted to end it like that? So it was the three of us in the studio - Tayah, the songwriter; Thomas, the producer; and I. And we'd never worked together before, so this was our first time. They didn't have any experience with classical music, and it was also my first time in a recording studio. So we just let our creative minds flow. We knew we wanted to switch things up - we wanted something that would, you know, gag the people. Then our producer, Thomas, was like, 'What about techno?' And Tay and I were like, 'Okay, we'll see.' We took a quick bathroom break, and while we were gone, he'd already added some EDM/techno elements. When we came back, he was like, 'Guys, I did something.' And then he played it for us - and we were like, "Wow. This slaps." And from that day on, we just kept it. How has life been since winning? Yeah, it's been very fun - pretty busy, because I've been traveling a lot. But I love being in different places, meeting new people - especially with my amazing team. I honestly can't complain. I have the best people behind me, so I'm really happy about that. I do get recognised a lot more. And sometimes, you know, when we're in a rush, I want to take a picture with people, but then I have to start running again. So it's a bit stressful in that sense - but it's fun. It's nice being recognised. So what's next for you? What have you got going on - tour, album? Yeah! So after the whole European press and promotion tour, I'm heading right back into the studio once I get home to make new music - because that's what everyone is very excited for. I'm so looking forward to it. I love being in the studio and experimenting a bit. We've got enough time, and we're gonna let Wasted Love have its well-deserved moment. And while that's still riding its wave, I'll be back in the studio working on what's next. And where do you see your sound going? I'll definitely keep my operatic sound - that's my USP, that's what people know me for. I want to hold on to my musical we'll see how commercial we can go - or what other experimental switch-ups might fit with that operatic sound. But I'm definitely keeping the high notes. If you could team up with anyone - your dream collab - who's top of your list? Obviously, Ariana Grande. But I'd also love to work with Charli XCX. That would be insane.
