‘Architecton' Trailer: Victor Kossakovsky Charts the History of Concrete in A24 Documentary
Concrete, like most material, is taken for granted. Just look at the quiet beauty of the gray stone slabs as captured in Victor Kossakovsky's visual art installation adjacent documentary 'Architecton.' The film, which premiered at Berlinale 2024, centers on legendary architect and designer Michele De Lucchi as the history of concrete is explored.
'Gunda' director Kossakovsky investigates the effects of concrete on the environment, especially since the material cannot be recycled. The feature spans a war torn Ukraine to the Middle East, where concrete ruins of various kinds still stand after years of destruction. 'Architecton' is a reflection on man's relationship with architecture and making meaning out of ruins, rocks, and yes, concrete. The feature includes the research and voices of more than 100 leading international architects; Kossakovsky details in the trailer that eight percent of all CO2 is emitted due to cement, with 36 percent of that coming from construction alone.

'Architecton' is also produced by A24, which newly downsized its doc division. Next in the works includes 'Deathmatch,' a wrestling documentary directed by 'Talk to Me' and 'Bring Her Back' helmers, the Philippou brothers.
Kossakovsky told IndieWire in 2020 that he prefers to strip away certain classic film elements to emphasize emotionality onscreen. 'I decided to eliminate music. I can make emotional film and people will cry, without manipulating them,' Kossakovsky said at the time of making 'Gunda,' which has no dialogue and is shot in natural light.
Kossakovsky later said to Dutch publication Ekko that his filmography is a call to action. 'Architecton' extends his efforts to helm nature-based docs, starting with '¡Vivan las Antipodas!' and continuing with 'Aquarela' and 'Gunda.'
'It's obvious that we humans are not paying attention to what's going on,' he said. 'Thousands of mountains are disappearing before our eyes all over the world without us noticing. Humans can't see things on that scale. China has produced more cement in the last two years than the United States has in the last century. The amount of cement produced in a year is enough to create a wall one meter wide and one kilometer high, stretching around the world. Concrete may be good for basements and foundations, but we build entire buildings, giant boxes, out of cement. It's toxic, and it's not long-lasting. […] If we face that reality, we will realize that cement is among the world's most dangerous toxins. It is just as important for researchers to find a good alternative to cement as it is to find a cure for cancer.'

A24 will release 3 new movies on HBO Max in July 2025 – and there's only one I'll be watching due to its perfect Rotten Tomatoes rating

Since that multi-year deal was signed in December 2023, over 100 A24-developed films have joined Max's back catalog. You'll be able to add more to that growing list next month, too. July 2025 marks the official streaming debut for three more new movies from the acclaimed indie studio, including two that only arrived in theaters earlier this year. However, based on their Rotten Tomatoes (RT) critics scores, there's only one that'll deserve a spot on our best Max movies list. To help you decide which film(s) are worth your time, I've ranked the forthcoming trio from worst to best. That way, you'll have a better idea of determining if some of July's new Max movies should be added to your watchlist. A cult-based thriller that's not dissimilar to another A24 flick in Midsommar, Opus struggles to match the psychological intensity, narrative mystery, and lashings of horror that of its 2016 genre cousin. Malkovich chews the scenery with a delightfully unhinged performance but, that aside, Opus is a largely forgettable movie. The never-aging Marvel actor Paul Rudd and Wednesday superstar Jenny Ortega ground proceedings with their convincing father-daughter dynamic, while Poulter and Grant bring classic British flair to their villainous roles. Those highlights aside, Death of a Unicorn is a tonal misfire that disappointingly skewers its potentially great narrative and thematic ideas. With its perfect RT critical rating, though, On Becoming a Guinea Fowl is an unmissable dark comedy-drama that's not only Nyoni's first feature in eight years, but also cements the Zambian-Welsh filmmaker as one of the most talented of her generation. A universally appealing, beautifully shot, witty, and at-times uncomfortable movie whose exploration of death, self-deception, and communal misgivings is incredibly impactful. ‘The Hunting Wives' Moves To Netflix For U.S. Following Lionsgate & Starz Separation; Premiere Date Set
EXCLUSIVE: The upcoming thriller drama The Hunting Wives, previously set at Starz, has a new home. Netflix has picked up the exclusive U.S. rights to the series, starring Malin Åkerman and Brittany Snow, which comes from showrunner Rebecca Cutter (Hightown), Lionsgate Television and 3 Arts Entertainment. It will debut on the streamer on July 21. The Hunting Wives, an adaptation of May Cobb's best selling novel, was greenlighted by Starz in October 2023 when the network was part of Lionsgate, with Lionsgate Television serving as its in-house studio. The show, also starring Dermot Mulroney and Chrissy Metz, was filmed last year and is now completed and in the can. The move also made sense for Starz which is moving towards owner economics post-separation with its programming strategy focused on series the network fully controls or co-produces. Starz recently opened writers rooms for several new projects in contention for a series green light, all fully owned. It is unclear whether The Hunting Wives falls under the restructuring charge of $177.4 million Starz recently took 'related to a strategic reassessment of the company's content portfolio.' Netflix's The Hunting Wives exclusive deal is for one year, sources said. Meanwhile, Lionsgate's worldwide television group is in the process of selling the show to international buyers, which had been the plan since the time the series was earmarked for Starz, a largely domestic player. The Hunting Wives tells the story of Sophie (Snow) and her family's move from the East Coast to deep East Texas, where she succumbs to socialite Margo Bank's (Åkerman) irresistible charms – and finds her life consumed by obsession, seduction, and murder. The series is executive produced by writer-showrunner Cutter, Erwin Stoff (The Serpent Queen) for 3 Arts Entertainment and Cobb. Cutter, who is in development on two projects for Netflix with Jerry Bruckheimer Television, is repped by CAA and Jackoway Austen Tyerman. ‘Meet The Parents 4': Paramount To Co-Produce With Universal & Distribute Internationally
Paramount has come on board to co-produce Meet the Parents 4 with Universal, and will handle international distribution on the latest entry in the $1 billion-plus grossing franchise. Universal has domestic. The film is set to roll out from November 25, 2026. Paramount President of International Theatrical Distribution, Mark Viane, confirmed the news during the studio's presentation at CineEurope today in Barcelona. The first Meet the Parents grossed more than $330 million at the global box office when it was released in 2000, becoming that year's seventh highest-grossing film worldwide. Its sequels Meet the Fockers (2004) and Little Fockers (2010) were also box office successes. In all, the franchise has grossed $1.13 billion worldwide. Paramount is enjoying the continued global success of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning which this past weekend crossed $500 million worldwide. Its next two major wide releases are Smurfs beginning July 16 overseas and Liam Neeson-starrer The Naked Gun in August.
