Monumental Imagery, Explosive Visuals: Catch Trailer For ‘Architecton' That Everyone's Watching
The trailer for Victor Kossakovsky's stunning new documentary Architecton has racked up 160,000 views in a day – very impressive for a nonfiction film. The feature, built of stone and concrete, examines the materials of architecture and the permanence or impermanence of buildings and the societies for which they were constructed. A24 will release Architecton on August 1 in over a hundred theaters. Watch the trailer above. More from Deadline 'Architecton' Review: Victor Kossakovsky's Magnetic Film Essay Reflects On Man's Relationship With Nature – Berlin Film Festival 'Gunda' Director Victor Kossakovsky On Empathy For Farm Animals And Finding His Porcine 'Meryl Streep' Ayo Edebiri Built 'Barney' Pitch During Asia Trip The Berlin Film Festival, where Architecton premiered in 2024, wrote of the film, 'Centering on a landscape project by the Italian architect Michele De Lucchi, Kossakovsky uses the circle to reflect on the rise and fall of civilizations, capturing breathtaking imagery from the temple ruins of Baalbek in Lebanon, dating back to AD 60, to the recent destruction of cities in Turkey following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in early 2023. Rocks and stone connect the disparate societies, from ghostly monoliths stuck in the earth to tragic heaps of concrete rubble waiting to be hauled off and repurposed anew.' Architecton has earned rave reviews from critics, including Deadline's Damon Wise. Reviewing the film out of the Berlinale, he wrote, 'Kossakovsky's roving eye takes us around the world, in a travelogue that shows us the resilience of the old world versus the transience of the modern. It shows the poetics of ruin, but it is a cycle with diminishing returns; the debris of the Romans and Greeks still has a grandeur and majesty that is missing from the shabby detritus of the modern world, as we see in the aftermath of the earthquake that laid waste to Turkey in the summer of [2023].' Wise added, 'Kossakovsky's fascinating, magnetic film essay does help us to reassess what we've lost over the centuries. And, best of all, it isn't depressing… [I]t is a warning sounded in the good faith of being heard in the nick of time.' The Russian-born Kossakovsky – who has lived for many years outside of Russia – has earned dozens of awards around the world for his films, including Sreda (1997), Russia From My Window (2003), ¡Vivan las antípodas! (2011), and Aquarela (2018). His 2020 documentary Gunda, executive produced by Oscar-winning actor Joaquin Phoenix, examined the life of a pig raising a farrow of piglets who are then seized and sent to slaughter. ‘Architecton' Trailer: Victor Kossakovsky Charts the History of Concrete in A24 Documentary
Concrete, like most material, is taken for granted. Just look at the quiet beauty of the gray stone slabs as captured in Victor Kossakovsky's visual art installation adjacent documentary 'Architecton.' The film, which premiered at Berlinale 2024, centers on legendary architect and designer Michele De Lucchi as the history of concrete is explored. 'Gunda' director Kossakovsky investigates the effects of concrete on the environment, especially since the material cannot be recycled. The feature spans a war torn Ukraine to the Middle East, where concrete ruins of various kinds still stand after years of destruction. 'Architecton' is a reflection on man's relationship with architecture and making meaning out of ruins, rocks, and yes, concrete. The feature includes the research and voices of more than 100 leading international architects; Kossakovsky details in the trailer that eight percent of all CO2 is emitted due to cement, with 36 percent of that coming from construction alone. Next in the works includes 'Deathmatch,' a wrestling documentary directed by 'Talk to Me' and 'Bring Her Back' helmers, the Philippou brothers. Kossakovsky told IndieWire in 2020 that he prefers to strip away certain classic film elements to emphasize emotionality onscreen. 'I decided to eliminate music. I can make emotional film and people will cry, without manipulating them,' Kossakovsky said at the time of making 'Gunda,' which has no dialogue and is shot in natural light. Kossakovsky later said to Dutch publication Ekko that his filmography is a call to action. 'Architecton' extends his efforts to helm nature-based docs, starting with '¡Vivan las Antipodas!' and continuing with 'Aquarela' and 'Gunda.' 'It's obvious that we humans are not paying attention to what's going on,' he said. 'Thousands of mountains are disappearing before our eyes all over the world without us noticing. Humans can't see things on that scale. China has produced more cement in the last two years than the United States has in the last century. The amount of cement produced in a year is enough to create a wall one meter wide and one kilometer high, stretching around the world. Concrete may be good for basements and foundations, but we build entire buildings, giant boxes, out of cement. It's toxic, and it's not long-lasting. […] If we face that reality, we will realize that cement is among the world's most dangerous toxins. It is just as important for researchers to find a good alternative to cement as it is to find a cure for cancer.' A24 will release 'Architecton' in select theaters August 1.
