Kolhapur: The pro-merger action committee approached Kolhapur MP Shahu Chhatrapati on Monday to discuss the integration of the fringe villages into
Kolhapur Municipal Corporation
boundaries. The committee members emphasised that the merger request is based on scientific considerations rather than political motives, given Kolhapur city's current growth limitations.
During the meeting, the committee members urged the MP to arrange for a comprehensive discussion with Maharashtra's chief minister, deputy chief minister, urban development minister, secretary, and principal secretary. The MP assured them that he would consult with rural MLAs and coordinate a detailed meeting soon.
The committee members expressed frustration over guardian minister Prakash Abitkar's unavailability to discuss the merger issue.
They announced plans to organise a 'gherao' to press for their demands for incorporating the fringe villages into city limits.
KMC recently submitted a proposal to state govt requesting the incorporation of 18 villages and two MIDCs into Kolhapur's municipal boundaries.
Pro-merger committee activist Advocate Baba Indulkar said, "Kolhapur city has no available space as per World Health Organisation (WHO) standards.
Therefore, KMC cannot provide basic amenities to the citizens. This is a violation of Article 21 of the State Constitution. As Kolhapur Lok Sabha constituency includes Kolhapur city, the citizens are lacking their fundamental rights."
Former mayor R K Powar said, "The expansion of Kolhapur city has been stalled since 1946. The population of Kolhapur city was approximately 36,000 in the year 1946, with an area of 66.82 sqkm.
The area remains the same in the year 2025, but the population has increased to a total of approximately 10.5 lakhs."
The committee highlighted various challenges, including pollution, traffic congestion, flooding issues, a growing flood-affected population, limited development space, overburdened roads, and increased waste management problems due to daily visitors. These factors have created additional financial pressure on the Municipal Corporation, hindering Kolhapur's development.

Kolhapur villagers to continue protest against merger plan
Kolhapur: A new proposal to merge eight city-adjacent villages into Kolhapur's municipal limits is being prepared, following instructions from chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and deputy CMs Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar on Tuesday, expediting the process. Villagers opposing the merger warned of legal and street-level protests, saying they would continue to oppose the merger. The proposed merger has sparked strong reactions from both pro- and anti-merger groups. The Anti-Merger Action Committee held a meeting, where attendees targeted MLA Rajesh Kshirsagar, who had been a key proponent of the merger. Uttam Ambawade, the sarpanch of Ujlaiwadi, a village slated for merger, said, "Why are residents of rural areas being harassed without reason? Kshirsagar became MLA three times, what did he do for Kolhapur's development? Issues like roads and drains persist." The merger proposal has been revised multiple times. Initially, 42 villages were considered, then 20 were selected, and now the proposal includes only eight city-adjacent villages. Mudshingi's deputy sarpanch Tanaji Patil emphasised unity and said, "State govt can merge other villages anytime, so we shouldn't stop opposing just because our village isn't included in the list. We will not give even an inch of village land." As per the merger process, Kolhapur Municipal Corporation is expected to receive a letter from the urban development department to include eight villages in a day or two.

Min asked to provide more autonomy to municipal corporation
Kanpur: The Corporators Welfare Association of Kanpur Municipal Corporation on Wednesday presented their stand on three key issues before urban development minister Arvind Kumar Sharma and principal secretary, urban development Amrit Abhijat. The discussions took place on the Sambhav portal, with municipal commissioner Kanpur Nagar, Sudhir Kumar, also in attendance to submit KMC's standpoint. According to the KMC officials, a meeting was previously conducted between the urban development minister, and Naveen Pandit, president of the Corporators Welfare Association, along with patron Amit Pandey on June 16 at Lucknow. The Association had provided three written submissions to the minister during the meeting. The Association emphasised that the disputes between the KMC and Kanpur Development Authority are forwarded to the commissioner, Kanpur division, where decisions are consistently made in favour of KDA because the commissioner is also the chairman of KDA. The Association has requested appointment of a different officer, instead of the commissioner for resolving disputes between KMC and KDA. The second issue raised relates to the sewage farm. The municipal corporation possesses 1200 acres of sewage farm land, which officially belongs to it. However, KDA has approved two projects for this land during its board meeting. Despite the fact that this land's use cannot be changed due to a previous order from the Allahabad high court, KDA is allegedly proceeding with these projects without adhering to the court's decision. Further disputes regarding land have also emerged in the Smart City project. KDA has been granted rights over land from the gram samaj and Improvement Trust, an arrangement unique to Kanpur and not found in the other 16 municipal corporations. It was highlighted that cities in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra are advancing. Kanpur, formerly the largest city in Uttar Pradesh, has now fallen behind. The Association attributes this setback to Kanpur Municipal Corporation's lack of authority. Regarding these three issues, the Welfare Association had submitted its position and urged that authority be granted to municipal corporations, Naveen Pandit said.

Traders who lost shops to get 1L, market to be rebuilt, promises CM
Kolkata: CM Mamata Banerjee on Monday evening visited the fire-ravaged Orphanganj Market and announced Rs 1 lakh compensation to all traders whose shops were completely gutted and Rs 50,000 to those whose shops were partially damaged. Banerjee also announced that the KMC will rebuild a "scientific" market, with all firefighting mechanisms, at the same spot. Until then, the market will operate from a temporary location, which is not far from the main Orphanganj Market. The CM announced her plans to release Rs 10,000, a part of the compensation, for each trader in the next two days so that "business can continue". "I have informed the mayor that a new market will be built here with govt funds. I will try to speak to the police within 2-3 days and arrange Rs 10,000 as immediate relief so that affected families can run their households. No expenses will be involved from your side," said the CM. "Also, we will have to shift the market. The councillor and the mayor have already identified a temporary location. I have seen it as well. You will be able to continue your business there until the new market is constructed," said Banerjee. CM Banerjee said she will go through the investigation and survey reports to ascertain how much compensation is to be released. "I am ready to help, but I must see the survey report to understand the extent of the damage. I need to know how many shops are completely gutted and how many are partially affected. An investigation will be conducted," she said. Advising the traders to test cylinders and ACs frequently, the CM asked them not to take "undue risks" to save their goods. "First, make sure the fire is fully extinguished. Please prioritise your lives. The smoke might cause breathing issues. Allow the fire brigade and police to do their job," she said.
