olkata: Jadavpur University could not open its undergraduate admission portal on Wednesday as the authorities are taking legal opinion on the OBC reservation-related issue.
This follows the high court's stay on the gazette notification, which included 140 subgroups in the new OBC list, of which 80 are Muslims, till July 3.
Sources said officials of JU had an appointment with the lawyer on Wednesday evening for advice on the OBC issue, but due to students' protest, the appointment was postponed.
JU was scheduled to open its portal on Wednesday.
"The students gheraoed the pro-VC and were agitating against the university's granting of Rs 14 lakh to Trinamool Shiksha Bandhu Samiti for renovating their office, which was damaged in a fire on March 1, when education minister Bratya Basu visited the JU campus.
The protest went to such an extent that at one point, the pro-VC expressed his desire to quit," said a source.
A teacher said, "The scheduled appointment with the lawyer could not happen because of the students' agitation. The officials will visit a lawyer to take legal opinion on Thursday." A student said, "When the university is reeling under an acute funds crunch, on what grounds did the authority sanction such a huge amount for renovation?"

Once prosperous, Hungary is now the poorest nation in EU — meanwhile, this tiny nation tops the wealth rankings
Once seen as one of Europe's rising stars, Hungary has officially become the poorest country in the European Union in terms of household welfare , Kyiv Insider reported, citing the latest Eurostat data. The numbers show that Hungarian households now consume just 72% of the EU average, which is the lowest among all 27 member states, according to the report. Hungary's Fall to the Bottom of EU Living Standards Hungary's figure is in contrast to Luxembourg, as it now leads the European Union in the Actual Individual Consumption (AIC) per capita with 141%, followed by the Netherlands at 120% and Germany at 118%, reported Kyiv Insider. Even Poland has outpaced Hungary in real living standards by about 13 percentage points, and its AIC is at 85% of the EU average, according to the report. ALSO READ: Pro-Israel hackers nab $90 million from Iranian crypto exchange - then burn it all in symbolic blockchain move Luxembourg Leads, Hungary Lags Behind While Hungary's GDP is currently at about 77% of the EU average, which is above several low-income EU nations, its households continue to remain poorer in terms of consumption, as per a Kyiv Insider report. This gap reflects that Hungary's economic output is not transforming into real benefits for Hungarian families, according to the report. Economic Output Isn't Reaching Families The poor economic conditions come under the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán , who is an increasingly authoritarian and pro‑Russian Fidesz regime, which has been systematically pillaged, according to Kyiv Insider report. Live Events Under Orbán's leadership, "the state-owned industries have been hollowed out, public subsidies redirected to political allies, and EU funds commandeered by power networks close to the government," as reported by Kyiv Insider. Along with this, ordinary Hungarians are facing other issues like low real wages, high inflation, brain drain, and a hollowed middle class, according to the report. FAQs What does it mean that Hungary ranks last in AIC? It means Hungarian families have the least access to goods, services, and public resources like healthcare compared to others in the EU. How is this different from GDP? GDP shows how much a country produces, but AIC shows how much people actually benefit. Hungary produces more than some countries, but its people are getting less.

Musk makes big move amid rift with Trump, decides to open…, India set to benefit due to….
Earlier this month, Elon Musk's Starlink received a licence from the telecom department for providing satellite internet services in India, a key milestone that will take it closer towards launching commercial operations in the country. COO of Elon Musk's SpaceX, Gwynne Shotwell, on Tuesday called on Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, a meeting that comes just days after Starlink secured a licence from the Telecom Department. Scindia said discussions centred around various opportunities for collaboration in satellite communications to power Digital India. Elon Musk's recent initiatives in India shows his increasing focus on the country. These developments come at a time when Musk's tensions with the U.S. President Donald Trump has been growing in recent times. Tesla's Entry In India After the Starlink launch, now Tesla is set to open its first showroom in India by July in Mumbai. The company is importing its Model Y SUVs from its factory in China. Tesla's first batch of vehicles, comprising five Model Y rear-wheel drive SUVs, has already arrived in India. These vehicles were shipped from Tesla's Shanghai factory. According to Bloomberg News, based on official documents, the Model Y is currently the world's best-selling electric vehicle. Tesla's first showroom will open in Mumbai, likely by mid-July after which another in New Delhi. The company has also imported parts for superchargers, car accessories, and other equipment from the U.S., China, and the Netherlands to support its operations. Tesla Car Pricing The five Model Y SUVs that arrived in Mumbai are priced at Rs 27.7 lakh each. However, due to India's high import duties, over Rs 21 lakh in tariffs have been added to the cost. Fully built imported cars priced under $40,000 are subject to a 70% tariff in India, along with additional charges. Starlink In India Starlink is a satellite internet service developed by SpaceX the American aerospace manufacturer and space transportation company founded in 2002 by the world's richest man Musk. It provides high-speed, low-latency broadband internet worldwide using satellite technology and is aptly described by some as broadband beamed from the skies. Unlike conventional satellite services that rely on distant geostationary satellites, Starlink utilises the world's largest low Earth orbit or LEO constellation (550 km above Earth). This constellation of LEO satellites (7,000 now but eventually set to grow to over 40,000) and its mesh delivers broadband internet capable of supporting streaming, online gaming, and video calls. Starlink, which had been vying for an India licence for some time now, recently signed pacts with Ambani's Reliance Jio and Mittal's Bharti Airtel, which together control more than 70 per cent of the country's telecom market, to bring the US satellite internet giant's services to India. UPA abandoned Mumbai to its fate, Mahayuti saved it with massive infra investment: Amit Shah
Mumbai: Union home minister Amit Shah on Friday said the UPA regime neglected Mumbai, but the BJP-led Mahayuti government "saved" it with over Rs 7 lakh crore of infrastructure projects. Investments in the irrigation sector helped end the spate of farmer suicides in Maharashtra, a problem that had been afflicting the state for many decades, the senior BJP leader said. Speaking at the inauguration of the new headquarters of the Maharashtra Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture here, Shah said India will move up one place to be the third largest economy by 2026-27, and claimed there has been a "symmetric" development in the country over the last 11 years. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Simple Morning Habit for a Flatter Belly After 50! Lulutox With elections to the Mumbai municipal corporation around the corner, Shah said till a few years ago he used to fear what would happen to Mumbai given its problems like population explosion, old and creaking housing, slums, and traffic congestion. Congratulating Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for reversing the situation, Shah said Fadnavis helped the state, and noted that the state also benefited when Eknath Shinde led the previous government where Fadnavis was deputy CM. Live Events Before 2014, there was a "double engine" government of Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi at the Centre with NCP's Sharad Pawar also being part of it, yet the Congress-led ruling alliance "left Mumbai to its fate" for those ten years, he alleged. "The double engine governments under Narendra Modi (at the Centre), and Fadnavis-Shinde (in the state) have saved Mumbai with investments of Rs 7 lakh crore," Shah said. To highlight the BJP-led government 's achievements, he listed infrastructure projects such as the 337-km Metro network at an investment of Rs 1.50 lakh crore, Rs 1.08 lakh crore Bullet train between Mumbai to Ahmedabad, Rs 80,000 crore, greenfield port at Wadhawan, Rs 17,000 crore Atal Setu trans-harbour bridge, Rs 55,000 crore Versova-Virar sea-link and Rs 60,000 crore Virar-Alibag multimodal corridor. Shah also asked if the people now criticizing the style of functioning of the BJP governments had the vision to plan such projects, and added that if they had implemented such projects, Fadnavis would have been left with nothing to do. There are also accusations and criticism regarding ongoing slum rehabilitation projects, Shah rued, without mentioning any specific project. Notably, the opposition has been targeting the BJP government over the Dharavi redevelopment project involving the Adani group. The Fadnavis government also implemented projects in the rest of Maharashtra, he said, citing the examples of new airports at Shirdi and in Sindhudurg district. When he entered politics, farmer suicides in Maharashtra were being discussed at the global level, Shah said, adding that BJP-led governments boosted investment in irrigation which ensured that farmer suicides ended in the state. Replying to criticism of Maharashtra facing injustice in central allocations, Shah said the total devolutions and grant-in aid to the state increased to Rs 7.82 lakh crore between 2014 to 2024, against Rs 1.91 lakh crore between 2004 to 2014 during the UPA era. Additionally, grants were given to irrigation and infrastructure projects as well, the Union minister said. Shah urged industry chambers like MACCIA to sensitise the government about the challenges faced by its members for better policy outcomes, recalling how suggestions to build the Konkan Railway by lobby groups helped economic growth. Underlining that global events like Israel- Iran and Russia-Ukraine wars are having an impact on the domestic economic activity, Shah said business chambers should engage professional bodies to be relevant, which is possible if they continue to make necessary changes in their functioning. Shah also asked MACCIA to introspect on its own policies and think of how to get young blood into its working.
