IIT-Kgp, JU better global ranks, CU sees slight dip

Kolkata: IIT-Kharagpur, Jadavpur University and Calcutta University are the only three institutes from Bengal that have made it to QS World Ranking 2026. While IIT-Kharagpur and JU improved their rank, CU's position saw a dip. The list this year features 54 institutes from the country. The QS World University Rankings, published annually by the London-based global higher education analytics firm Quacquarelli Symonds, assess universities based on performance indicators, like academic reputation, faculty-student ratio, research impact, international student diversity, graduate employability. IIT-Kharagpur has climbed seven spots from 222nd rank last year to 215th. It also ranked 4th among the IITs. The new IIT Kharagpur director, Suman Chakraborty, said, "We have performed better than last year but our rank can improve if we can create a positive impression on the outer world as perception plays an important role." The outgoing acting director, Amit Patra, said, "Our performance in citations per faculty, international research network and sustainability, helped us better our position. " At 676, JU's rank improved significantly from last year's position between 721 and 730. "As a state-run institute, we have constraints, including funds crunch. Still, JU has been performing well. The credit goes to our teachers', researchers' and students' dedication. Improvement in areas, like faculty-student ratio, international student diversity and international student ratio, could have advanced our rank, but they do not depend entirely on the university," said an official. CU's rank dropped to a place between 771 and 780 from last year's 751 to 760. CU acting VC Santa Datta said, "The rank has slightly dipped but it's a proud moment that we are still among institutes on the world ranking list. With limited resources, my aim is to develop the university holistically, focusing on research and international network."

IIT-Kgp gets full-time director after 6 months

Kolkata: Suman Chakraborty, institute chair professor in mechanical engineering at IIT-Kharagpur, was appointed the institute's full-time director on Thursday. A winner of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, Chakraborty is currently a J C Bose National fellow. He was awarded the 2026 TWAS Award in Engineering and Computer Sciences by Unesco for his work in micro- and nanoscale flows, enabling innovations in diagnostic technologies and improving rural livelihood and healthcare access. Chakraborty confirmed he had received the appointment letter for the IIT-Kgp director's post. "The institute needs a cultural transformation. A healthy environment with positive thinking and free flow of ideas should prevail and the environment of intimidation should be eliminated. Young students lost their lives. Despite the institute's efforts, we have not been able to address the matter. If we can collectively work, things will change for the better," he said. "My biggest happiness will be to work for IIT-Kgp's academic progress." After V K Tewari's retirement in Dec 2024, the campus was being run by IIT-Varanasi director Amit Patra. Chakraborty graduated from JU in mechanical engineering in 1996 and did his ME at IISc. He joined JU as a lecturer. He received his PhD from IISc in 2002. He joined IIT-Kgp in 2002 as an assistant professor.

JU students gherao pro-VC, hit key meet for UG admission

1 2 3 K olkata: Jadavpur University could not open its undergraduate admission portal on Wednesday as the authorities are taking legal opinion on the OBC reservation-related issue. This follows the high court's stay on the gazette notification, which included 140 subgroups in the new OBC list, of which 80 are Muslims, till July 3. Sources said officials of JU had an appointment with the lawyer on Wednesday evening for advice on the OBC issue, but due to students' protest, the appointment was postponed. JU was scheduled to open its portal on Wednesday. "The students gheraoed the pro-VC and were agitating against the university's granting of Rs 14 lakh to Trinamool Shiksha Bandhu Samiti for renovating their office, which was damaged in a fire on March 1, when education minister Bratya Basu visited the JU campus. The protest went to such an extent that at one point, the pro-VC expressed his desire to quit," said a source. A teacher said, "The scheduled appointment with the lawyer could not happen because of the students' agitation. The officials will visit a lawyer to take legal opinion on Thursday." A student said, "When the university is reeling under an acute funds crunch, on what grounds did the authority sanction such a huge amount for renovation?"

Metro stops work after VIP Rd residents' waterlogging plea

Kolkata: Orange Line work near Haldiram flyover on VIP Road was stalled after residents of a high-rise next to the metro alignment complained that their water supply system was damaged following subsidence due to piling or foundation work, which requires deep digging. RVNL has engaged JU experts to conduct a health audit. Residents of Anupama Housing Society on VIP Road said they requested RVNL, which is implementing the New Garia-Airport Line, to stop work after noticing some ground settlement that seemed to have damaged the concrete underground reservoir and connecting pipeline a few days ago. "The ground settlement can be spotted along a stretch at our housing complex. The concrete paving has given way, leading to a 4-inch gap. We asked RVNL to appoint a third-party of experts to address it," said a resident. "When the centrifugal pump and connecting pipelines were damaged, we called in local technicians to temporarily restore the system. But we need a permanent solution," said another resident. A section of the metro viaduct (on which tracks are laid) grazes the housing complex. Residents have been flagging safety concerns over the last few years — the one relating to piling work for construction of Pier 822L being the most recent. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's The Average Price of a 6-Hour Gutter Guards Upgrade Read More Undo "Piling work involves creating a deep foundation system by driving or boring structural elements (piles) into the ground. The piles transfer the load of a structure to more stable soil or rock layers, particularly when the upper soil is weak," an engineer said. An official of Metro Railway said, "As desired by residents of Anupama Housing Complex, JU experts have initiated an assessment of the blocks. The only subsidence we are aware of is the one that was caused by heavy rain sometime back, and the housing society's boundary wall was damaged. At that time, work on a pile cap was on next to it. As a precautionary measure, steel casings have been installed around each pile near the housing society. " A pile cap is a reinforced concrete structure that sits on top of a group of piles. Its primary function is to distribute load from superstructure evenly across piles, ensuring they work together. The official said RVNL built another pile, 3.6m away from the one near Haldiram flyover.
