Netflix's 'greatest gangster film ever made' but fans have one complaint

With a 92 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes and a legion of fans, 2018 Indonesian action thriller The Night Comes for Us is a masterclass in raw storytelling and visceral intensity.
The 2018 action thriller The Night Comes for Us is a standout hit, boasting an impressive 92 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its unflinching narrative and raw, intense delivery.
Crafted by Timo Tjahjanto, the piece initially took life as a script, underwent transformation into a graphic novel, and ultimately found its form as a film.

The movie brought together Joe Taslim and Iko Uwais, previously noted for their pairing in The Raid: Redemption. Alongside them, the film features Julie Estelle, Sunny Pang, Zack Lee, and Shareefa Daanish.

Renowned for its ferociously intense combat scenes saturated with graphic violence, The Night Comes for Us follows ex-triad heavy Ito (played by Joe Taslim), who goes rogue to shield a young girl from his criminal brethren, consequently putting himself in the crosshairs of his former syndicate and a horde of lethal hitmen, including a showdown with his old pal Arian, played by renowned Pencak Silat figure Iko Uwais.
Reflecting on the production process, Joe Taslim shared his perspective with Film School Rejects, saying: "All the credits for choreography, I think, goes to Iko Uwais and his team. They design all the fights, the structures. He would jump in to give his ideas to shape the fights, to freshen up the tone of the movie and stuff. This movie was supposed to happen actually in 2014 and something happened so it has to be in a coma.", reports the Express.
Movie star shared insights on preparations for their action role, said, "So we trained actually three, four years ago for the movie. We refreshed the training but we changed a little bit of the choreography."
In 2022, director Timo Tjahjanto hinted that although a sequel to his successful film is not yet confirmed, he remains optimistic. Tjahjanto has said a sequel has been developed centring around Julie Estelle's character, The Operator.
Robert Liefeld, the co-creator of Deadpool and Cable, offered glowing praise for the movie and its director by taking to social media platform X (once known as Twitter) to express his admiration.

Liefeld said: "Give Timo Tjahjanto ALL the money for Deadpool 3! ! ! ! Holee mother of God, I have seen the future of action films and it is TIMO TJAHJANTO! !".
He continued to laud Indonesian cinema's significant impact on the global action film scene, urging for these talented directors to be given big comic book projects to work on. He even proposed the prospect of a standalone Cable movie under @Timobros' direction, predicting a groundbreaking result.
Despite receiving criticism for its graphic violence and gore, the film impressed numerous critics, with one saying: "This is incredibly violent to the point of disturbing. Nonetheless, the fight scenes are some of the best I've ever seen. But this is a very dark and depressing story."

Another review provided a positive spin, said: "The Night Comes For Us is a dynamite two hours and for those of us missing the action films of old, it's a breath of fresh air."
Speculation is rife about the potential for "The Night Comes for Us" to expand into a series, with one reviewer stating: "Action fans could hardly wish for anything more than what's served up in The Night Comes for Us. The film's hardcore constituency will be wanting more of this from [Timo] Tjahjanto, and a sequel, prequel, or even franchise would not surprise from here."

In critical acclaim, another review added: "An utterly thrilling ride from the first second to the last, The Night Comes For Us is one of the best action movies of recent years."
Filmgoers also demonstrated their exhilaration, as one thrilled viewer said: "As a die-hard action fan, I went into this movie with high expectations-and it still managed to blow me away. The action sequences are intense, brutal, and beautifully choreographed. It's a full-on adrenaline rush from start to finish. This one's a must-watch for any action junkie."
An additional piece of audience feedback read: "I still come back and watch this film from time to time. I love the fight choreography. Even after watching it a few times, I still cringe on a few moments when I see blades go in places they shouldn't. This is right up there with The Raid films for me."
One fan posited that the Indonesian film industry is setting an example for Hollywood, commenting: "Quick, gruesome, stylish which personifies Indonesian movies. Iko Uwais and Joe Taslim were awesome as usual and Hollywood should learn from them."
One viewer was effusive in their praise for the film, stating: "Absolutely fantastic movie. Some of the best action directing and some of the best action choreography I've ever seen. The relationship between Iko and Arian is incredibly tragic and compelling. Exceeded my expectations in every way."

Troubled The Flash star Ezra Miller sparks concern with bizarre interview

Ezra Miller sat down for a rare - and rather bizarre - interview just a month after their surprise Cannes appearance. The 32-year-old troubled star - who uses they/them pronouns - talked about their future in acting as they revealed it was 'on tentative grounds' while sitting down with Italian outlet Lo Speciale Giornale on Thursday. Miller had posed on the red carpet for the first time in two years at the Filming Italy Sardegna Festival in Cagliari, Italy. The reclusive actor - who starred in the 2023 The Flash film - had a slew of legal issues from 2022 including assault charges and grooming allegations so they shocked many when they appeared at the most famous film festival at the premiere of Die, My Love in support of their friend Lynne Ramsey. While smoking a cigarette, they explained: 'I came to Cannes to support one of my closest friends in the world who is Lynne Ramsey — who I think is one of the greatest living filmmakers.' Miller went on to claim that they are writing a film with Ramsey, 55, which they claimed 'will likely be the first thing I do' in their return to Hollywood. They went on to peculiarly say: 'I've been writing a lot, because you can do that in solitude which has been friendly to me.' Miller went on to say that they would do anything for their filmmaker friend Ramsey despite Cannes being a 'tough re-entry point' to being in the limelight again before going on yet another bizarre tangent. They said: 'If you've been in the woods for three years, I do not recommend going straight to Cannes, where every photographer and every weirdo, every rich genocidal freak be there, you know what I mean?' This came just a month after they made am aforementioned surprise appearance at the Cannes Film Festival after years of laying low following their controversies. The troubled star showed up on the red carpet wearing a maroon tuxedo paired with a beret over their long hair but walked quickly, not stopping to be photographed. Miller was there to support director Ramsay for the premiere of her film Die, My Love starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson. The Flash actor previously worked with the director on the 2011 film We Need to Talk About Kevin. Miller has been keeping a low profile since The Flash — which ended up performing poorly in the box office — premiered in 2023. The previous year, they fled the spotlight after apologizing for their 'past behavior' and said they were seeking help for their 'complex mental health issues.' Before then, they made countless headlines as a result of multiple arrests and a series of distressing allegations, including allegedly grooming a teenage girl. Videos surfaced online in which the actor appeared to be assaulting innocent civilians, and there were disturbing reports that the star was allegedly housing young children in a home with 'guns and bullets strewn' around the property. They were arrested in Hawaii after allegedly attacking a couple at a karaoke bar in 2022. A month later, they were arrested again for allegedly injuring a woman by throwing a chair at her head. They were also accused of harassing a woman in Germany, allegedly hosting three young children and their mom in Vermont in an 'unsafe environment.' And they were also charged with felony burglary in the same state. However, in June 2023, a protective order issued against them in the state of Massachusetts was lifted, signaling an end to their legal troubles. The actor was previously accused of behaving inappropriately around a 12-year-old child and the minor's family. They allegedly met in 2016 when Tokata was 12 and Miller was 23. Tokata's parents since-lifted petition previously accused Miller of 'corrupting a minor' as well as 'cult-like and psychologically manipulative, controlling behavior.' Her father explained last year that he and his wife 'withdrew' the 'grooming' complaint filed in June 2022 and explained they were 'doing our level best to move on.' At the time, Miller said they were 'very grateful.' 'I'm encouraged by today's outcome and very grateful at this moment to everyone who has stood beside me and sought to ensure that this egregious misuse of the protective order system was halted.' They then slammed the press in their social media statement. 'I implore those members of the media who have recklessly spread false claims and failed to accurately report the truth and context of this story, to hold themselves to a higher standard and take the time to find the facts, rather than chasing the clicks.'

The Waterfront: Is The New Drama From The Creator Of Dawson's Creek Worth Watching? Read What Critics Say

One of Netflix's newest arrivals is The Waterfront , already dubbed 'Dawson's Creek for adults', which sounds like perfect weekend viewing to us. It's even created by the same person: Kevin Williamson. Starring Jake Weary, Melissa Benoist, Danielle Campbell, Mario Bello and Holt McCallany, this drama is bound to introduce you to some new faces too. But is the new show worth watching? Is it genuinely gripping or just a good comfort watch? Read below to find out. Set in the fictional seaside town, Havenport, North Carolina, this eight-part Netflix series follows the prominent yet dysfunctional family, the Buckleys, as they try to keep their decaying fishing empire afloat by entering the dangerous world of the drug trade. It doesn't sound too far off last summer's hit show, The Perfect Couple, or any of the Harlan Coben series, so if you liked any of those then this one might be worth a try. Yes, you can watch the official trailer for the series below. Nick Hilton at The Independent gave the series three stars, describing it as 'predictable to a fault' but 'hard not to keep watching'. The Guardian 's Lucy Mangan agrees, giving The Waterfront three stars too. 'Twists come thick and fast, there's tons of plot and action is set in a water-based community,' she writes. 'The creator of the '90s megahit's new show is an opportunity to wallow in nostalgia – albeit with added drug running.' It is described as 'highly bingeable' by Variety too. Aramide Tinubu explains the series is inspired by Williamson's father, who was a fisherman and began smuggling drugs in the 1980s to make ends meet. ' The Waterfront is a highly entertaining series about four people willing to do anything to hold on to their legacy, even if it means turning on each other in the process,' reads the review. The New York Times ' Margaret Lyons praised the show for bringing 'more murder to Netflix'. 'The show is one of many to follow the Yellowstone model, a family saga of violence and secrets, of huffy men and sly women, of distinctive names. It is also about land that's been in this family for generations, gosh darn it – land that's our legacy if only the cruelties of debt and developers would abate,' she writes. It might only have a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience rating of 3.9, but the reviews are largely positive. This is a watchable, familiar show with all the twists and turns audiences are looking for. If you have a day to yourself to lie on the sofa away from the heat, you know what to do.
