Tornado review: A singular, if rarely easy, watch about double-crossing rogues on the rampage

Tornado      Director : John Maclean Cert : None Genre : Drama Starring : Tim Roth, Jack Lowden, Takehiro Hira, Joanne Whalley, Koki Running Time : 1 hr 31 mins In Tornado the film-maker John Maclean returns to the austere storytelling that defined Slow West , his well-regarded debut, from 2015. Set in a rugged and unnamed corner of 18th-century Scotland, the film follows the taciturn young circus performer of the title and her father as they are drawn into a deadly pursuit. Despite the ambiguous period setting, the McGuffin is familiar: an opportunistic theft, a misplaced bag of swag, and double-crossing rogues on the rampage. The heroine, played by the Japanese actor and musician Koki, is a stoic teenager with a talent for swordplay and a complicated, sulky relationship with her dad, Fujin (Takehiro Hira), a warrior turned puppet master. Their life on the road, performing morality puppet plays with a touch of Punch and Judy ultraviolence, takes a dark turn when a local scallywag absconds with two bags of stolen gold during one of their shows. The theft attracts the attention of Sugarman, a grizzled, ruthless outlaw (Tim Roth at his meanest) with a small gang of thugs in tow, including his disgruntled son, Little Sugar (Jack Lowden). As Sugarman's group pursues Tornado across misty moors and abandoned villages, the muted action unfolds less as a traditional revenge plot and more as a meditation on end-of-days degeneracy. For all the genre signifiers, Maclean's confusing, fragmented structure, contemplative pillow shots and dour tone leave little room for the playful high-jinks of Kill Bill or Samurai Jack. Alison Steadman Thora Hird Patricia Routledge Margaret Rutherford Robbie Ryan, who was also the cinematographer on The Favourite and Poor Things, leans into the script's sense of dread. Through his lens the bleak Scottish landscape becomes a grey antagonist that threatens to drown everyone in apocalyptic rain. The characters, accordingly, often appear small and helpless against the remote hills. Up close, however, the handsome costume and production design are frequently too anachronistic to engage. Even the title feels as if it belongs to a different film. Tornado will frustrate the giblets out of anyone seeking narrative momentum or emotional catharsis. But viewers willing to sit with its stark silences and oppressive atmospherics can look forward to a singular, if rarely easy, watch. In cinemas from Friday, June 13th

American Pickers star Mike Wolfe branded as unrecognizable as he debuts new look

He's usually spotted scouring barns and backroads for forgotten relics, but American Pickers star Mike Wolfe has now turned heads for a very different reason. The 60-year-old reality TV star looked nearly unrecognizable in a new selfie shared to his Instagram Stories on Sunday, June 8. In the picture, he was seen standing alongside his girlfriend, former Beauty and the Geek contestant Leticia Cline, 46. Wolfe, known for his signature Americana style and keen eye for vintage treasures, rocked a yellow tee, green ball cap, black sunglasses, and a noticeably longer beard. Cline complemented his incognito look with a blue shirt, yellow hat, and a pair of red-orange shades. 'Undercover with @leticiacline,' Wolfe cheekily captioned the snapshot, which was set to The Rolling Stones ' Undercover of the Night. With both wearing hats and sunglasses, the couple looked like they were on a covert mission - potentially involving some antiques. Or perhaps they were just trying to enjoy a low-key day out without getting recognized by fans. The selfie comes weeks after he thrilled fans with a shocking career move: stepping into the world of film. In the upcoming movie Day of Reckoning, Wolfe will star alongside his girlfriend, Cline. The couple reportedly filmed the project earlier this year, marking Wolfe's first major acting role outside of his long-running reality series. Details of the film are still under wraps, but sources say the gritty thriller will show a whole new side of the antique hunter. Wolfe has certainly been keeping busy lately. In addition to launching a business venture in Le Claire, Iowa - rumored to be linked to fellow Pickers star Danielle Colby - he's also announced a brand-new History Channel series called History's Greatest Picks with Mike Wolfe. He also recently wrapped filming for Season 27 of American Pickers. But it's not all good news: as Wolfe recently shared a bittersweet update about the end of an era, announcing the closure of Antique Archaeology in Nashville Tennessee after 15 years. He explained that he wanted to slow down, focus on his family, and give his attention to projects that would 'pull at his soul.' He specified that he wasn't disappearing. 'I'll still be picking, sharing, and selling online and at our original LeClaire, Iowa store,' he said in his Instagram post. 'But I've learned over the years that it's easy to spread yourself too thin, and balance is something we all chase in one way or another.' But if his latest moves are any indication, the road ahead looks anything but dull.

The New Lilo & Stitch Explores A Longtime Theory Fans Had About Nani, And Both The Actress And I Are Fired Up About Learning More

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. SPOILERS lie ahead for Lilo & Stitch. There's been a lot of internet chatter lately about live-action Disney movie remakes, especially regarding how they differ from their OG counterparts. That's certainly been the case for Lilo & Stitch. As I noted in my Lilo & Stitch review, given I'm someone who grew up at the exact right time when the 2002 animated original came out, I knew the remake had a high bar to clear. And, while I think some fans have a good point about how Nani's arc differs from the original, I also want to talk about how the new movie explored a long-running fan theory about her. In the original Lilo & Stitch, 18-year-old Nani is doing the best she can, working service jobs and trying to support Lilo however possible following the deaths of their parents. It's heavily suggested that there's a history involving social workers that have given the sisters a bad rep, and Lilo is very close to being turned over to the state. Over the years, eagle-eyed fans also noticed that in Nani's room, there are a ton of surfing trophies on her dresser. You can see them in the image above. Throughout the two decades leading up to the live-action movie, fans have been discussing how perhaps Nani was a really good surfer who competed and perhaps even had a promising career in the sport before the death of their parents. When CinemaBlend spoke to the original Nani voice actress Tia Carerre about the theory in 2022, she said it was 'never discussed.' However, she talked about how the character having a 'difficult time' is evident in her relationship with Lilo throughout the movie because 'she's a mother figure' but 'still just a young girl herself.' We've never known for sure if Nani did give up her dreams for Lilo before, but the live-action Lilo & Stitch does delve into this for the first time. In the 2025 movie release, viewers are clued into more of Nani's perspective, who like many girls her age, aspires to go to college and has her own dreams. Of course, she didn't plan to be Lilo's surrogate mother, but she's suddenly thrust into the role. Also, we also learn that she's so good at surfing that she can teach it! It doesn't fully make the theory canon, (especially the career part), but it definitely leans into Nani's ability to surf more than the original. Plus, in one notable change, she, rather than David, saves Stitch from drowning. And, when I asked Agudong about building upon the character she said this: I think to be able to like just in general kind of create more of that nuance and dive deeper into Nani's arc and backstory and like our struggle and stuff. And, we got to do a lot of the water training before production and I got to do a lot of the stunts and it was really cool to kind of build more of Nani's life in real time too, as far as that goes, which was incredible. She's such a strong, independent girl, and she really is like doing her best to try to keep the family together. I think it's a little odd that she decides to go to UC San Diego for a marine biology degree when she already lives in beautiful Hawaii. However, the new Lilo & Stitch film does allow room for Nani to have her own aspirations for herself outside of caring for Lilo. And, thanks to alien technology, it seems like she's hanging out with Lilo literally all the time with the portal ray gun. Disney+: from $9.99 a month w/ ad-supported planStream the original Lilo & Stitch movie now using a Disney+ subscription. The ad-supported plan starts at $9.99 a month. You can also go ad-free and pay $15.99 a month. There's also the ability to save 16% by pre-paying $159.99 for a Deal All the while, Lilo is officially being taken care of Tutu, who one producer told us was added to the film on account of Hawaii screenwriter Chris Bright feeling like Nani and Lilo wouldn't really be so alone in a real-life Hawaiian community. I totally see where some people are disappointed with Nani changing her path for the live-action movie because by the end the sister's are basically torn apart after all. Yet, at the same time, both Sydney Agudong and I are pleased that Nani's backstory was strengthened for the 2025 version more than before. On that note, check out Lilo & Stitch in theaters now!
