Keniogan folks hopeful of 24-hour power supply
Published on: Tuesday, June 17, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 17, 2025 By: Abbey Junior Text Size: Sabah Electricity personnel inspecting the upgraded generator facility at the Pulau Keniogan power station, which now supplies electricity to the island for up to 18 hours daily as part of efforts to achieve 24-hour coverage. BELURAN: Villagers on Pulau Keniogan are one step closer to enjoying 24-hour electricity, as Sabah Electricity ramps up efforts to improve power supply on the remote island. The community, made up of some 200 households, currently receives electricity for 18 hours a day — an upgrade from the previous 12-hour schedule — following the installation of a new, more efficient diesel generator. Advertisement Sabah Electricity Chief Operating Officer Ir. Ts. Mohd Yusmanizam Mohd Yusof said the move was part of the utility's commitment to ensure equitable access to electricity for all, including rural and island communities. 'We've sent a new, more efficient generator to Pulau Keniogan to ensure a more dependable power supply,' he said. 'We are working towards 24-hour electricity. Our goal is to make sure that every Sabahan gets the best service and electricity supply possible.' Pulau Keniogan, located off the coast of Sandakan and accessible only by boat, is home to a Bajau-majority fishing community that has long depended on candlelight, kerosene lamps and small private generators to get through the night. Local development officer (UPPM) Lokman Madlis said the longer electricity hours had already improved daily life for many residents. 'Alhamdulillah, it now feels like we're not so isolated anymore,' he said. 'People here have freezers, some even have air-conditioning and Astro. With longer electricity hours, we can store our catch properly and send it to the mainland for sale the next day. This really helps our income, especially for those who depend entirely on fishing.' Community representative Kamarzaman Marof echoed similar sentiments, saying full-day electricity is not just a convenience but a necessity. 'We really need 24-hour supply because ice is crucial for the fishermen,' he said. 'Without it, it's hard to keep our catch fresh. Some of us go out to sea in the morning and only return late in the day. If the ice melts or there's not enough, the fish will spoil and we lose money.' He pointed out that many elderly villagers rely on fans or cooling appliances due to the heat, adding that 24-hour power would improve their comfort and health. Sabah Electricity is currently working with the Rural and Regional Development Ministry (KKDW) to complete a solar hybrid project on the island. Once completed, it is expected to provide long-term, clean and reliable energy to the village. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah BN ready to face GRS: Bung
Published on: Monday, June 16, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 16, 2025 By: Abbey Junior Text Size: Bung said past alliances that lacked sincerity only led to weak, inconsistent governments that failed to inspire public confidence. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) is open to a democratic clash with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the coming state election, but says it won't enter into alliances just to prop up weak and insincere governments. Its Chairman Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin said Sabah BN does not need to wait for signals from other parties before stating its position or taking action. Advertisement 'The statement reflects the normal dynamics in a multi-party democracy, where different players operate in the same space but with different foundations of legitimacy and structure,' he said. He was responding to GRS Deputy Secretary-General Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, who had voiced support for a straight fight between GRS and BN in the coming Sabah polls — mirroring Bung's earlier suggestion for both coalitions to go head-to-head at the polls. 'If viewed positively, it is a healthy sign of competition in ideas and policy,' Bung said. However, he stressed that cooperation must be built on trust and honesty, not just on paper agreements. 'BN does not reject political cooperation outright. But we will only work with those who are honest, not just in signing agreements, but in implementing policies, respecting the role of partners and upholding the integrity of the political system,' he said. 'Political cooperation without honesty is like building a house on mud — it may stand for a while, but it will eventually collapse under pressure. BN has learned this lesson, and so have the people.' Bung said past alliances that lacked sincerity only led to weak, inconsistent governments that failed to inspire public confidence. 'To GRS, if you are truly ready for a democratic contest, we welcome it,' he said. 'Clashing at the ballot box is not something to fear. It is the best way to prove who really holds the people's trust, based on genuine strength, not borrowed support or shortcuts.' Bung also called on Sabahans, especially younger and politically aware voters, to reassess their choices as the State heads into its next election. 'Sabah BN does not come with mere slogans. We have a track record of leading the State towards development. We have also been tested. ' Now, we return with the determination to improve, not to repeat. 'In politics, legitimacy doesn't come from the number of seats alone, but from the people's trust in our sincerity.' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Published on: Saturday, June 14, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jun 14, 2025 By: Abbey Junior Text Size: The Toyota Hilux that was hijacked with an elderly woman inside. PENAMPANG: A carjacker made off with a retired pilot's Toyota Hilux with his 88-year-old mother still inside after faking a crash near Kg Notorus along Jalan Tambunan–Kota Kinabalu. The incident, which occurred around 11.45am on Thursday, involved 64-year-old John Peter Otigil, who was travelling with his mother and sister when their vehicle was rear-ended by a Proton Saga later found to be stolen. Advertisement Thinking it was a regular accident, John and his sister got out to check the damage after the other driver claimed he had fallen asleep. While John was taking photos of the scene, the suspect suddenly jumped into the Hilux and drove off with the elderly woman still seated inside. John tried to stop the vehicle by clinging onto it but was thrown onto the road, sustaining injuries to his elbow and knee. He then flagged down a passing car and gave chase. His mother was later found unharmed by the roadside about 2km from the scene. John stopped pursuing the suspect and lodged a report at the Penampang police station. Penampang Police Chief Supt Sammy Newton confirmed receiving a report of the incident, adding that the suspect is believed to have fled the scene through a secondary road in Kg Delima, Penampang. 'The case involves a four-wheel-drive vehicle reported stolen by the complainant. Investigations are under way,' he said in a statement issued on Friday. Police are urging those with information on the incident to contact Investigating Officer Insp Mohd Anis bin Abdullah at 013-6355734. Water: Student group wants UMS to take legal action
Published on: Thursday, June 05, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 05, 2025 By: Abbey Junior Text Size: 'I believe the VC is playing his role as the head of the university, and it's important that his stance remains consistent. This is the first time he has made such a statement, and we welcome it,' Fadhil said. Kota Kinabalu: Suara Mahasiswa UMS has urged Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to take legal action against the State Water Department (JANS), demanding at least RM100 million in damages over the prolonged campus water crisis. In a statement, the student group accused JANS of misleading the public in its May 29 statement, which downplayed the severity of the water supply issue from the State-owned R13 tank — the main water source for UMS. The group cited internal documentation and reports from UMS's student council and maintenance unit showing that water levels in the R13 tank had dropped to zero on several days, halting supply to the campus. They also claimed this data had been officially shared with JANS and supported with photographic evidence. The group said the financial burden of the water crisis had been unfairly shifted onto students, many of whom faced repeated disruptions and had to bear additional costs, including tuition fees, off-campus rent, transportation, utility bills and other living expenses. 'UMS must sue JANS and the damages should be returned to the students — this is not just about water anymore. It's about accountability and justice,' the statement said. Earlier, Daily Express reported that UMS Vice-Chancellor Datuk Dr Kasim Mansur said the university had long been transparent about the water issue, and clarified that the R13 tank, owned and operated by JANS, had repeatedly failed to supply enough water to meet UMS's daily needs. Kasim said if water levels had been sufficient, students would not have resorted to holding demonstrations. Suara Mahasiswa President Fadhil Kasim welcomed the VC's remarks and said it marked an important shift in the university's stance. 'I believe the VC is playing his role as the head of the university, and it's important that his stance remains consistent. This is the first time he has made such a statement, and we welcome it,' he said. 'We will be meeting the VC tomorrow at 2pm to exchange views, possibly touching on the water issue.' The student group is organising Perhimpunan Aman Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0, a peaceful rally scheduled for June 21-22 in Kota Kinabalu to demand systemic accountability and a solution to longstanding infrastructure problems. They also alleged that students involved in past activism had been called in by police and faced threats — but maintained that they would not be intimidated in their push for justice. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Putrajaya open to petroleum revenue deal for Sabah
Published on: Friday, May 30, 2025 Published on: Fri, May 30, 2025 By: Abbey Junior Text Size: PMO pic KOTA KINABALU: The federal government is open to negotiating a petroleum revenue deal with Sabah, similar to the one in place with Sarawak, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Speaking at the state-level Kaamatan Festival in Penampang, Anwar said he has no objection to Sabah receiving a greater share of oil and gas income, as long as discussions are structured and responsible. 'We did it with Sarawak—why not Sabah? I have no problem,' he said, suggesting that the same federal-state negotiation model could be applied. He emphasised that national, federal, state, and Petronas interests must all be protected. Anwar also criticised politicising the issue, saying progress comes from negotiation, not street-level rhetoric. Addressing Sabah's long-standing frustrations, he acknowledged persistent issues like electricity, clean water, education, healthcare, roads, and poverty. While recognising valid concerns, he urged appreciation of recent development efforts. Sabah currently receives 5pc in petroleum cash payments a deal local leaders have long considered unfair. The state is pushing for a better arrangement under the Malaysia Agreement 1963. Advertisement Anwar said while Sabah's needs are important, the government must also serve other states with limited resources. Still, he reaffirmed the federal commitment to support Sabah's development and address real, ongoing challenges faced by its people. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
