Moses or Luai: five-eighth speculation remains for NSW
Parramatta coach Jason Ryles says Mitch Moses could work at five-eighth for NSW, with Nathan Cleary's halves partner one of several key decisions looming for Laurie Daley.
Daley has just 11 days until naming his Blues team for the State of Origin series opener at Suncorp Stadium on May 28, with relatively few players locked in.
NSW's historic win in the series decider last year in Brisbane appeared to set the Blues up long-term, but Michael Maguire's exit as coach has clouded matters.
Nathan Cleary's return to full fitness, Penrith's early-season woes, injury concerns in the backs and Jake Trbojevic's status as captain has also complicated things.

While Cleary is almost certain to wear the No.7 jersey, who will partner him is a point of contention.
The continuity candidate would be Jarome Luai, who played all three games at five-eighth in last year's 2-1 series win and with Cleary for a decade at Penrith before moving to Wests Tigers in 2025.
However, Moses has single-handedly made the Eels a formidable force since his return from a foot injury last month and has proven himself at Origin level when Cleary was unavailable.
The 30-year-old has arguably been the dominant halfback in every game he has played since moving to Parramatta in 2018.
But Moses' current club coach says he thought the star No.7 would be happy to switch to five-eighth if it meant pulling on the Blues jersey again.
"I think Mitchell (Moses) would be happy to play wherever they put him in a representative team," Ryles said on Wednesday.

"I think it means a fair bit to him so I don't think it would be an issue if he was selected there."
The other spine question for NSW is whether Daley will stick with Penrith's Dylan Edwards or return to Origin stalwart James Tedesco, with the Roosters No.1 replaced by Edwards after the game-one loss last year.
Edwards missed four matches with a groin injury early in the season and the Panthers sit 15th on the ladder, while Tedesco has been close to the NRL's best.

Other questions in the NSW backs revolve around who will join Stephen Crichton in the centres, with Manly's Tom Trbojevic and Souths' Latrell Mitchell seen as the likely candidates.
Both players have struggled with injury this season but have put in several dominant performances at Origin level.
On the wing, 2024's incumbents Brian To'o and Zac Lomax are both working their way back from injury, with the Penrith winger named to face North Queensland on Saturday.

Ryles said that Lomax was recovering well but would not be ready for the Eels clash with the Dolphins on Thursday night.
"We're probably having to hold him back a little bit so we're aiming for next week but we'll just have to wait and see," Ryles said.
The other bolter for NSW selection on the wing is Jacob Kiraz, who scored a hat-trick for Canterbury in their Magic Round win over Gold Coast.
In the forwards, the pressing question is whether Daley will stick with 2024 captain Jake Trbojevic or hand a debut to the Tigers' breakout star Terrell May.
Trbojevic only played 85 of a possible 240 Origin minutes in 2024 and May has drawn numerous headlines for his barnstorming start to the 2025 season.

Bulldogs offer another player to rival clubs in wake of Lachie Galvin's signing
The future of another Bulldogs player looks set to lie away from Canterbury, as the club continues its mid-season shake-up in the wake of Lachie Galvin's signing. is reporting that the Dogs have offered former Warriors young gun Zyon Maiu'u to rival NRL clubs, just four months after signing him on a two-year deal. The 21-year-old prop - who debuted in the NRL with the Warriors last season - was signed with the Auckland-based side until the end of the 2026 season. But he was granted an early release after looking for more opportunities in first grade and the Bulldogs hailed the young middle forward's signing in February. "The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs are excited to announce the signing of boom youngster Zyon Maiu'u on a two-year deal, effective immediately," the club said at the time. But four months can be a long time in footy and Galvin's unexpected arrival after being released by the Tigers, has left the Dogs needing to offload players to navigate a tricky salary cap situation. Canterbury agreed to release Kurtis Morrin last week, with the versatile forward joining the Gold Coast Titans for the next two seasons, effective immediately. And it appears that Maiu'u is also surplus to requirements at coach Cameron Ciraldo's Bulldogs, with the club reportedly offering him up to rival clubs after giving the young prop limited opportunities to try and break into their first grade squad. Latu had already signed a three-year deal to join Canterbury from next season, but the clubs agreed on a mid-season switch before the June 30 deadline. Dragons coach Shane Flanagan had already vented his frustrations in April about being unable to hang onto the forward. 'I wanted to keep him and I'm not happy about the negotiation side of it,' Flanagan said in April. 'It's been handled poorly, terribly... The way that it was handled by his management, was handled poorly, really poorly. We've brought that young bloke up the last three or four years and we wanted to keep him and never got an opportunity to.' Galvin's arrival from the Tigers has been the biggest mid-season move from the Bulldogs though, with the 19-year-old playmaker turning the ladder-leading Bulldogs into an even greater premiership threat in 2025. But it has also cast a cloud over the futures of off-contract Bulldogs halfback Toby Sexton and veteran hooker, Reed Mahoney. Sexton's form in particular has been instrumental to Canterbury's rise to the top of the ladder and he was excellent at No.7 alongside Galvin in their round 15 victory over Souths, before the Dogs enjoyed the bye in round 16. Galvin has already forced Sexton to shift into hooker earlier this season and it will be curious to see where Ciraldo plays the pair when first-choice No.6 Matt Burton returns for Thursday night's clash against the in-form Panthers. Mahoney has also seen his future at the Dogs called into question after Galvin's arrival and cut a frustrated figure in the sheds after being taken off in the second half of the teenage recruit's first game for the club. He was also replaced late in the victory against Souths, only to come back on minutes later with the game on the line. Mahoney is contracted with the Dogs until the end of next season but with his future unclear and an extension yet to be tabled, he'll be free to speak to rival clubs from November 1 unless a deal is done before then.

Link with Tuipulotu has 'got to get better'
Bundee Aki says it was "frustrating" that he did not link up better with midfield partner Sione Tuipulotu in the British and Irish Lions' defeat by Argentina in Dublin on Friday. Andy Farrell's side were beaten 28-24 by the Pumas in what was their sole warm-up fixture before they head to Australia for a nine-game tour that includes three Tests against the Wallabies. "We all know how Sione is as a player, he's class," said Aki, who was also on the Lions' tour to South Africa four years ago. "The frustrating thing for me was I wasn't able to connect well with him. He's an unbelievable player and there's no excuse, we've got to get better as a partnership going forward." After the stuttering start for the touring side, Aki believes individual combinations improving will be "better and beneficial for the group". "We've just got to be better at it and keep learning together, the more we grow as a partnership and then as a group, it's going to be better and beneficial for the group." Tuipulotu and Aki would both more regularly be deployed as inside centres, while fellow tourists Garry Ringrose, Huw Jones and Elliot Daly are all more used to wearing the 13 jersey. Tuipulotu has an established partnership with Jones for both Glasgow and Scotland, while Aki and Ringrose know each other well from Irish sides. Aki added: "Whoever it is, Garry, Huw, Elliot, as a unit we've got to make sure we gel together and try to get that cohesiveness fairly quick because we need to be better."
