Gorden Tallis in tetchy on-air moment with Broncos CEO after legend's sacking

Gorden Tallis in tetchy on-air moment with Broncos CEO after legend's sacking

Yahoo16 hours ago

Brisbane Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy copped a grilling on Triple M radio on Sunday, and declared it was the right decision for the club to sack former coach Kevin Walters. But Walters' great mate and club legend Gorden Tallis wasn't about to let Donaghy get away with a small oversight he made when speaking about Walters.
Donaghy was part of the decision-making process that led to Walters getting the axe last year after four years in charge of the Broncos. It was a particularly delicate call considering Walters is a club legend and won multiple premierships as a player.
On Sunday, journalist James Hooper asked Donaghy whether he still thinks it was the right call to sack Walters given the side's patchy form under new coach Michael Maguire in 2025. Before their great escape against Cronulla to win 34-28, the Broncos had fallen outside the top-eight and were travelling worse than this time last year under Walters.
"We made an incredibly difficult decision, and that's the reality of it," Donaghy said. "Kevvie is a great of our club and he put his heart and soul into the place for four years."
But sitting in the back of the box, Tallis was quick to interject. "30 years," Tallis said, correcting Donaghy that Walters had put his heart and soul in for four years. Tallis was referencing the fact that Walters made his debut for the Broncos back in 1990, and his roots with the club run much deeper than his four-year stint as coach.
Donaghy responded: "Sorry Gordie, 30 years. He did four years as the coach and did a wonderful job and was there for a long, long time. We want to ensure we're acknowledging that and recognising that. But we did feel it was time for a change and we do feel like it was the right decision."

Tallis has been one of Walters' most staunch defenders, and the most outspoken Broncos legend to criticise the club for sacking him. He launched into Adam Reynolds last year and suggested he might lose his captaincy, criticising him for appearing on a radio show that Walters' son Billy boycotted due to comments made about his father. Tallis said at the time that Reynolds should have shown solidarity and refused to go on.

On Sunday, Donaghy also addressed Selwyn Cobbo's future at the Broncos, which appears to be hanging by a thread. The former State of Origin player has been sent down to reserve grade, and the Broncos can reportedly only offer a new contract in the vicinity of $350,000 per year.
Cobbo is said to have met with the Roosters, Dragons, Dolphins and Cowboys, and will likely earn a much larger contract if he leaves the Broncos. "From where we sit right now we are hopeful that he continues with us, but we understand the [financial] sacrifices that come along with it," Donaghy said.

ENG vs IND 1st Test: India set 371-run target, will England rewrite Headingley history again?

By Aditya Bhagchandani Published on June 23, 2025, 22:28 IST India has posted a total of 364 in their second innings on Day 4, setting England a daunting target of 371 runs to chase down at Headingley. This follows India's first innings total of 471 and England's reply of 465, leaving the visitors with a lead of 370 runs going into the final innings. Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul led the Indian charge again, with Pant smashing his second century of the match—118 off 140 deliveries—becoming only the second wicketkeeper in Test cricket history to score hundreds in both innings of a Test. KL Rahul added a resilient 137 off 247 balls. The duo's stellar partnership set the foundation before India lost wickets in quick succession. England's bowling attack was led by Josh Tongue, who claimed three wickets including crucial blows at the tail, while Shoaib Bashir also picked up three, including the final wicket of Prasidh Krishna, who was caught at deep mid-wicket for a duck. As it stands, England will need to script one of the most memorable chases in Test history. The highest successful chase at Headingley remains 404 by Australia in 1948, and more recently, England chased 359 in a miraculous win over Australia in 2019. Bradley eyes playing captain role at Ryder Cup after win

Keegan Bradley is considering serving as a playing captain in September when he guides the US team into the Ryder Cup after winning the PGA Travelers Championship (Alex Goodlett) Keegan Bradley could become the first Ryder Cup playing captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963 after jumping to seventh in world rankings following his PGA Tour Travelers Championship victory. The 39-year-old American's fightback triumph Sunday over England's Tommy Fleetwood brought an eighth career PGA crown, his fourth in as many years, and sparked already brisk talk about Bradley playing on his US squad against Europe in September at Bethpage Black. Advertisement "Yeah, I mean, listen, this changes the story a little bit," said Bradley, previously reluctant to consider a playing captaincy. "I never would have thought about playing if I hadn't won. This definitely opens the door to play. I don't know if I'm going to do it or not, but I certainly have to take a pretty hard look at what's best for the team and we'll see." Bradley leaped 14 spots in the world rankings and into ninth in the US team points qualifying. While still shy of the six automatic qualifying spots, Bradley is in a position that would typically be worthy of a captain's pick. "It's still June, so we still got a long ways to go," Bradley said. "This definitely changes things a little bit and we'll all get together and figure out the best way to do this." Advertisement The six automatic qualifiers will be set after the BMW Championship on August 17 while the six captain's picks will be chosen after the Tour Championship in Atlanta on August 21-24. "I will play if I feel like it will help the team," said. Bradley has fielded questions about playing in the Cup all year. "I never really planned on playing," he said. "I really wanted to just be the captain. I really felt strongly about that. I want to serve the guys. They asked me to do a job. I want to do it to the best of my abilities. "With the amazing vice captains that I have, and I have a better perspective of playing in the Presidents Cup and being around a lot of the guys, I feel a lot more comfortable if I went that route." Advertisement If he plays, Bradley would load more responsibilities on his assistant captains -- Jim Furyk, Kevin Kisner, Webb Simpson and Brandt Snedeker. "I'm really proud of the guys that are vice captains," Bradley said. "You got Jim Furyk, one of the greatest players to play and also an incredibly great captain at the Presidents Cup." Furyk guided the Americans to a 10th consecutive victory over the Internationals in last year's Presidents Cup at Montreal. The Presidents Cup also saw Tiger Woods serve as a playing captain in 2019 at Royal Melbourne, when the US team won 16-14 in Australia. Advertisement PGA of America chief executive Seth Waugh told Bradley a year ago when he was picked as captain that he wanted Bradley to be the first playing captain since Palmer. "My head was spinning, I didn't know what they were talking about, but they knew that was a possibility," Bradley said. "A year ago I don't know if I would have thought I would be seventh in the world, but I certainly thought I would be contending in tournaments." js/ea
