Bikes banned on trains across large swathes of Sussex this weekend - here's why

Yahoo12-06-2025

No bikes will be allowed on trains across large swathes of Sussex this weekend.
Southern and Thameslink have announced that the bike ban will be in place on Sunday, June 15, due to the British Heart Foundation's London to Brighton Bike Ride.
The restrictions will apply to all stations in the area between Shoreham, Haywards Heath, and Lewes, including Brighton and Hove.
However, foldable bicycles will still be allowed on trains.
Thameslink posted on their website: "Bikes are usually allowed on our trains at off-peak times on weekdays and at weekends.
"However, when large cycling events are taking place with hundreds or thousands of participants, restrictions may be put in place.
"This is to avoid the walkways and vestibules on trains becoming blocked by the number of bikes."

Thameslink and Southern posted an identical statement in relation to the bike ban on Sunday, writing: "All day on June 15, customers travelling with non-folding bikes cannot board trains at any station in the Brighton area.
"The restrictions apply to all stations within a zone from Shoreham-by-Sea in the west, Haywards Heath in the north, and Lewes in the east.
"Additionally, from the start of service until 10am, non-folding bikes will not be allowed on trains for journeys to Clapham Junction.
"These restrictions are for safety reasons, and to prevent overcrowding, due to the significant number of bikes taking part in the London to Brighton Bike Ride."

The BHF London to Brighton Bike Ride will see around 14,000 riders taking part.
The 54-mile annual ride, which has raised around £50 million for heart and circulatory disease research since 1976, starts at Clapham Common and finishes on the Brighton seafront.
Over the years, the ride has seen participation from more than 700,000 cyclists, including notable figures like Pippa Middleton and David Seaman.

Sunflower Trail to return 'bigger and brighter than ever'

Fields of gold are set to bloom once again this summer. The Dorset Sunflower Trail will return for its fifth year in August 2025, offering visitors the chance to wander through acres of sunflowers in full bloom while supporting the Dorset County Hospital Charity. Located on Maiden Castle Road near Dorchester, the trail is set against the backdrop of England's largest prehistoric hill fort and easily accessible by public transport or car. Hazel Hoskin, organiser of the Sunflower Trail, said: "The 2025 Dorset Sunflower trail is shaping up to be bigger and brighter than ever. "Visitors will have the opportunity to stroll, photograph, and immerse themselves in the serene beauty that makes this trail such a unique spectacle." This year's theme, 'Save a Life,' focuses on raising awareness and funds for critical healthcare programs. Visitors can take part in well-being activities, learn about life-saving health initiatives, and support the Dorset County Hospital Charity's Emergency and Critical Care Appeal. Event highlights include art displays, a 'Sunflower Stride and Fun Run,' storytime sessions, pilates in the fields and music evenings as the sun sets over the sunflowers. The trail also champions local businesses and makers. Designed to be accessible and family-friendly, the event features two separate trails to ensure everyone can enjoy the sunflowers. Tickets will go on sale in July. The charming hamlet that's Lancashire's 'even littler' Lake District

Rivington is hugely popular, with its historic garden, the iconic pike and the intriguing Pigeon Tower. And for those wanting to explore, the area has more to offer, include a charming hamlet set in the most idyllic surroundings. White Coppice is on the edge of the West Pennine Moors, is somewhat sheltered from the swathes of tourists you might see in Rivington. The reason for that is probably because there's less to do, but that doesn't mean it's not worth paying it a visit! I'd say the focal point of the village is the cricket club adjacent to the car park. More: 'Special' Peak District town rivals hotspot in Germany with 'natural wonders' More: Fear, beer, love and loathing in the Lake District - an unforgettable weekend More: Downham the secret Lancashire village judged one of the most beautiful It's in the classic British cricket club style, plonked in the middle of a picturesque setting with a cafe nearby. White Coppice's main car park is also within close proximity of the cricket field, but I wouldn't worry about any stray balls smashing your car, it's not exactly Indian Premier League standard. (Image: Cheryl Doran) With that reassuring thought in mind, you can use White Coppice as a base to explore the rest of the nearby area. Take either the lowland route or the upper route to the Dove Tower. Both offer spectacular views on clear days looking north, south and west to include the Lake District, Snowdonia and Blackpool Tower Or, you could walk along a section of the disused Blackburn to Chorley railway which follows a long section of the Goit, the manmade waterway constructed in the 19th century by Liverpool Corporation to link Anglezarke and Roddlesworth Reservoirs. If you'd rather stay put though, you could grab a drink a BOXCO Forest coffee shop in the hamlet. (Image: Cheryl Doran) One customer who visited there said: "Just what I needed at the end of a walk. Lovely little place, with friendly welcoming staff. (Image: David Southern) "Me and my daughter both had a fruit smoothie and shared a slice of pecan brownie, my other half a coffee and a cookie and cream brownie. Very nice. Rounded off the day nicely. I look forward to my next visit." Rivington often gets labelled as a 'little Lake District'; you could say White Coppice is an 'even littler one'. You've got the serene mill pond near the cricket club, plus three other large bodies of water heading towards Causeway House Farm. So why not spend a summer's day in White Coppice?
