COSTA MESA, Calif., March 05, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A four-student team from Fisk University took the top prize in the #IYKYK Pitch Competition (If You Know, You Know) for their business idea to make financial literacy and credit education a rite of passage for young adults, sponsored by Experian and HomeFree-USA.
Nicknamed Team FinLit, Ansana Regmi, Destiny Marshall, Remilekun Ore and Sovit Lekhak earned a $40,000 scholarship for their proposal, "FinLit HQ." It's a personalized gaming experience for teenagers that helps them develop good financial habits and combat money dysmorphia. As they enter their early twenties, users move onto more advanced app-based credit education via gaming missions for real-world financial scenarios, such as buying books at college, renting an apartment, financing a car, and eventually purchasing a home. Because the proposed app would be integrated with Experian SmartMoney, Experian Boost and Experian Go, users would strengthen their real-life credit score as they play in preparation for making informed financial decisions as young adults.
"We realize there's a knowledge gap within the younger generation about credit. You don't give someone a car and ask them to drive on the road without any practice. You shouldn't push young people into the financial world without any education. One small mistake can impact you for years and that's why FinLitHQ is for users starting as young as 13," said Ansana Remi, a junior computer science major from Fisk University and captain of Team FinLit.
The #IYKYK Pitch Competition, powered by Experian's B.A.L.L. for Life initiative, challenged students to create a solution that makes financial literacy and credit education a rite of passage to young people coming of age, including those who are not part of the credit ecosystem. Credit invisibility – meaning without a credit report or credit score – affects 40% of consumers under 25 years of age. Credit invisibility disproportionately affects people of color: 28% of Black consumers, 26% of Hispanic consumers, compared to 16% of White and Asian consumers.
The competition was the culmination of the Experian Credit Academy created for the Center for Financial Advancement® (CFA). Five hundred students from 16 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) came together in live sessions with Experian credit education experts and self-paced modules. Finalists from Bowie State University and Talladega College also presented their ideas live at Experian's North America headquarters and each team received a $10,000 scholarship.

Experian reported at the end of 2024 that monthly average car payments were $742 for new vehicles and $545 for used ones, but new data from auto refinancing company Caribou has shown that the amounts that different generations pay vary more than you might think. Caribou's study included Gen Z, born between 1997 and 2012, millennials, born from 1981 to 1996, Gen X, born between 1965 and 1980, and baby boomers, born from 1946 to 1964. In its report, Caribou cited Gen Z as spending the largest share of their income on car payments, but millennials were listed as having bigger average loan balances at $38,600. Gen Z was listed as spending the least monthly income on vehicle payments, and baby boomers had the highest average credit score at 735. According to Caribou, Gen Z drivers are most likely to be behind the wheel of a Honda Civic, with an average loan amount of $32,069 and having a 14.05% APR. Millennials were cited as frequently driving a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and taking on loans with a 12.44% APR. Their higher loan balances can be attributed to the colliding costs of education, housing, and family. Gen X is described as carrying the most significant original loan amounts due to a fondness for larger trucks like the Ford F-150, but these higher starting costs meant the demographic was more likely to achieve the highest monthly savings after refinancing at $147. Next to Gen Z, baby boomers took out the lowest loans at $35,844 on average, and they carried the lowest APR of 11.91%, aligning with millennials in their preference for the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Caribou evaluated what these generations' auto loans looked like after refinancing by accessing its customers with good credit scores and steady incomes who refinanced their auto loans in 2024. Gen X scored the highest average refinance monthly savings of $147, with millennials following at $143, and baby boomers and Gen Z logging $131 and $126 average monthly refinance savings, respectively. Gen X and baby boomers were tied for the lowest monthly refinance APR at 8.39%, while millennials landed at 8.42%, and Gen Z at 8.50%. Across the board, annual percentage rate (APR) reductions ranged from 3.51 to 5.56 percentage points. "Car payments are one of the biggest monthly expenses for millions of Americans, and for too long, people have assumed they're stuck with the rate they got at the dealership. Our data shows that drivers of all ages can unlock real savings by refinancing. This isn't just some money hack; it's a necessity for many households," said Simon Goodall, CEO of Caribou. While refinancing might pose upfront costs that increase your overall loan cost, Caribou's data shows that generations from baby boomers to Gen Z can benefit from the practice. Higher original loan balances mean larger payments earlier in a borrowing term, but they can also lead to greater savings through refinancing. Caribou's report also illustrates that Gen Z drivers face unique affordability challenges with their pattern of spending larger shares of their monthly income on car payments despite lower loan amounts. Buying an automobile is one of the biggest purchases many Americans will make in their lives. New car prices have hit record highs, creeping up to an average price of nearly $50,000 in 2025, according to Kelley Blue Book. If you're buying a new car in 2025, choosing the right financing strategy can have a huge impact on your ownership experience and monthly payments. What is the "20% rule," and how can you use it to your advantage when purchasing the car, truck or SUV of your dreams? Thousands of drivers will finance new cars in 2025. The way you structure your financing plan affects how much equity you have in your new vehicle as well as your monthly, annual and total payments including interest. A minimum down payment of 20% can make financing deals less expensive in the long run. The down payment "reduces the principal loan amount and the interest you're likely to pay" according to Chase Bank. Suppose you're financing a new 2025 Toyota RAV4. If you secure a 60-month (five-year) financing loan with an interest rate of 4.99%, your monthly payments could be as low as $440 a month with 20% down (before taxes, fees and interest). A 20% down payment on the 2025 RAV4 ($29,2590 before taxes and fees) works out to $5,850. This leaves a principal amount of 80% of the SUV's MSRP ($23,400 plus taxes, fees and interest). Your monthly payment is your principal loan amount divided by your loan term (60 months in the example above) plus the fluctuating monthly cost of interest on the principal (4.99% annually in the example above). Drivers can save thousands in interest payments by putting at least 20% of a car's total cost as a down payment because of the cost of interest over you want to save even more money on your car loan and are able to manage your monthly payments after a 20% down payment, there are methods to pay the full cost of your car's financing before the end of your loan term. That said, there could be costs associated with paying off your car loan early, and it could hurt your credit score. If you pay your monthly loan amount and make additional payments on the principal, you can pay off your vehicle before the end of your loan term. That ensures you will reduce the amount of total interest you pay through financing, but it can have unintended consequences depending on your lender. Ultimately, the best way to ensure you save money on interest when financing a vehicle is to make the largest down payment possible and gain more equity in your car. The "20% rule" is a strategy to reduce the total cost of financing a vehicle, but you can tailor your financing agreement to your individual financial needs and goals. The average auto loan payment was $675 as of Q1 2025, according to the consumer credit reporting company Experian. NerdWallet says the average annual percentage interest rate for new cars is 6.70% for people with a credit score of 661 to 780. Interest rates increase significantly for drivers with lower credit scores (13.22% for a 501 to 600 score). Between rising new car prices and high interest rates, financing a new car is more expensive than ever. Before purchasing a new car, truck or SUV, drivers should: Assess the new vehicle's true cost, including taxes, fees and interest. Calculate the precise monthly auto loan payment and see if it fits within your budget. Consider how a high-percentage down payment could reduce your total financing expenditure. Brand-new cars may be fun to own and drive, but they are seldom needed; used cars car provide sufficient value for more affordable prices. Thanks to depreciation, American drivers can find great deals on used car models that cost thousands less than new. Nearly 60 percent of U.S. consumers who purchased a new electric vehicle in the first quarter leased it, up significantly from 36 percent from a year ago, according to Experian. For comparison, only 25 percent of all new-car buyers leased their vehicle in the same time period. About 31 percent of new-EV buyers financed their purchase and just over 10 percent paid cash. The high EV leasing rate indicates a trend building since the tax credits came into effect in the U.S. and made monthly EV lease payments attractive to many consumers. But the Senate Finance Committee recently proposed eliminating the $7,500 EV tax credit. The Senate could move up the plan to phase out the credits set out in the House bill passed May 22. The changes would go into effect 180 days after the bill's passage. Some EV buyers are still willing to pay a premium, but others might not see the value if the cars are more costly, said Matthew Phillips, CEO of Car Pros, based in Renton, Wash. 'If it is less affordable than a comparable ICE vehicle, then they are not going to be very interested,' Phillips said. Meanwhile, another dealership group anticipates automakers could offer incentives on their EVs to keep pricing down. 'GM has been very competitive on the incentives on their end and that is not scheduled to end,' said Joe Jackson, general sales manager for Bowman Auto Group in Michigan. 'Even if we see the federal $7,500 go away on the new side and $4,000 on the used side, we expect GM to remain committed to those lease programs.' The auto industry will have to see how changes to federal EV policy impact the market. Meanwhile, here are a few more first-quarter EV finance figures from Experian. The volume of EVs sold has been fairly stable at around 9 or 10 percent the past few quarters, said Melinda Zabritski, Experian's senior director of automotive financial solutions. The lack of growth could indicate the market is responding to the potential rollback of EV incentives, Zabritski said. The Tesla Model Y and Model 3 were the top two leased new vehicles in the first quarter. The all-EV Honda Prologue was No. 7 on the list. Customers who leased the Model Y will pay $426 a month on average. Those who leased the Model 3 will pay $402 monthly; Prologue lessees will pay $486 a month. In comparison, the average monthly payment of all new leases was $595 in the first quarter. Nearly 90 percent of new Prologue customers leased their vehicle in the first quarter. Less than 9 percent of them bought the car with a loan; less than 2 percent paid cash. Customers who paid for the Prologue with a loan in the first quarter will pay $708 a month on average. The average payment difference between a lease and a loan for all new cars sold in the first quarter was $142. Some new EVs had even bigger payment differences. For example, customers who leased their Chevrolet Equinox EV in the first quarter will pay $243 less on average than those who purchased the Equinox EV with a loan. New-EV buyers had an average credit score of 774 in the first quarter of 2024, but that fell to 767 this year. Meanwhile, the average ICE vehicle buyer had a credit score of 750 early last year and that rose to 752 in the first quarter of 2025.
