Girl groups are essential to the Black music experience, as many of the serve as the soundtrack to our lives and their #BlackGirlMagic can be found in multiple decades.
In celebration of June being Black Music Month, we wanted to give our favorite girl groups their well-deserved flowers, for not only provided music that we still play just as much today as we did back then, but also for serving fashion looks, beauty inspired and choreography they we still know by heart.

As the biggest-selling and most successful girl group in music history, TLC ushered in the 90s with a new look, new sound and a new message. From their early vibes of vibrant, baggy Cross Colours fashions and around-the-way girl style — that eventually transitioned to the sleek and polished looks they are widely known for — the Atlanta-based group racked up immediate hits with their first album, but it was their second release, 1995's CrazySexyCool that cemented them as icons in the music industry.

As one of the female R&B groups that arrived just as the 90s were coming to an end, Destiny's Child made respectable noise in the industry with its original line-up. However, once the quartet became the well-known trio, the hits they provided stacked up at a rapid pace. While fans knew that the group's run would be limited due to Beyoncé's inevitable solo career, they still remain one of the faves of the genre.

If you had the pleasure to experience what it was like to 'Weak' when it was first released in 1993, then consider yourself lucky that you got to experience the vibes in real-time. But SWV gave us many more hits outside of their signature track, as the 90s were filled with their infectious songs that had many fans convinced they could sing just as good as the ladies from NYC.

Formed during the early 90s R&B girl group wave, Xscape, a quartet from Atlanta, managed to make their voices heard despite stiff competition. From slow jams and house party cuts, to cheating anthems and gospel classics, the group offered fans a little bit of everything, which was evidenced by their success.
En Vogue Mike Guastella
While many of the early 90s R&B group initially leaned heavily into exploring a more tomboy aesthetic, En Vogue were the exact opposite and instead showcased full-on glamour and feminine style. Although their look was just one aspect of their greatness, as the group boasted powerhouse vocals and harmonies that recalled the classic girl groups before them.

Hip hop's most successful female group of all-time had absolutely no problem fitting into the hip hop boys club of the late 80s, and easily transitioned to the 90s with a plethora of hits that were not only sex positive and educational — but also female anthems that showed that were tapped into to culture.

Named after the Las Vegas area code, this trio was the perfect formula for the young 90s girl group. Their songs and lyrics were relatable, catchy and shot straight to the top of the charts. Combining smooth R&B with hip hop-infused tracks, 702 gave us jams that still resonate today.

As the first female group signed to Bad Boy Records, Total was set up to win from the very beginning, and that's exactly what they did when their debut album was released in 1995. They had the look, superstar features and songs from the biggest producers of the era, which is why they are still a playlist favorite.

Courtesy of another person on this list, TLC's Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes, Blaque arrived on the cusp of the new millennium and enjoyed great success as the 2000s arrived. With flirty and playful lyrics coupled with memorable rhymes, the group also ensured their notable status with a legendary appearance in Bring It On .

None of the aforementioned girl groups would exist without the one that paved the way, and that would be the legendary group and Motown favorite, The Supremes. They are the blueprint that many groups after them have followed, with a collection of timeless hits that are unmatched. The group is also known for its impeccable style that changed the way that Black women and fellow artists dressed, as it was incredibly feminine, polished and sophisticated.

We spent 8 hours at Ebony Beach Club's 'Juneteenth on the Pier'
The Ebony Beach Club's priority is to create a space for Black beachside communities in Los Angeles. So, every year on Juneteenth, they transform a local beach into a full-blown festival, consisting of nonstop DJs, a vivacious dance floor and neighborly vendors. This year, the beach club partnered with Black Lives Matter and took over the Santa Monica Pier. Here's everything that went down. 12:39 p.m. I arrive early. Ebony Beach Club founder, Brick, runs from vendor to vendor, ensuring everyone is ready for the day ahead. He boasts that there's 'not a cloud in sight' — and that everything is aligning for today's 'historic moment.' 1:58 p.m. I never thought I would be able to say I've found a sense of inner peace in the middle of the Santa Monica Pier. The typically chaotic environment is transformed by rhythmic breathing exercises and sound bath frequencies. For a moment, it does feel like I am cooking under the hot summer sun, but still, I couldn't be more at ease. 3:09 p.m. So far, the music selection transcends generations. Anything from Aaliyah to YG and Frankie Beverly fills the beachy air. But after hearing more than one early 2000s Ne-Yo classic, I can't help but wonder what he's up to. Why the lack of 2025 Ne-Yo bangers? 3:40 p.m. The crowd is slowly growing. Most partygoers sport a mix of brightly colored swimwear with denim shorts or matching mini skirts. Others wear graphic tees that commemorate the holiday and show L.A. pride. The most standout looks so far have included bejeweled thongs, color-coordinated snapbacks and sneakers and pleated, baggy jorts. 3:58 p.m. In the flash of a moment, a familiar face glides through the crowded pier. Her grill catches the light and a pair of Labubus hangs from a designer bag. It's none other than R&B royalty Kehlani. A growing swarm of fans start to catch on. I get my chance to say something as she passes. I compliment her latest single and let her continue on her mission to the bar. Cool, casual and of course, no mention of the fact that I was listening to the Kehlani Spotify radio on the whole drive over. 4:45 p.m. Brick halts the music and offers a quick history lesson from the DJ decks. He speaks of the first Ebony Beach Club, started by a man named Silas White in 1957. That year, 2,000 Black people, including Brick's own grandfather, signed up to be members. But the City of Santa Monica had barred it from ever opening. Today's Ebony Beach Club celebration roughly creates space for around 2,000 people to be at the exact same beach and enjoy the party. 'This is the most Black people the Santa Monica pier has seen in a while,' said Brick, who was met with an echoing applause. 'Today, we are Black people who are occupying this space for the first time in a long time.' 5:30 p.m. The emcee says, 'If you're outside the barricade, I'm sorry. If you couldn't get a ticket, I'm sorry.' He addresses the consistent crowd of onlookers who have lingered by the barricades. Some appear to be tourists, but most spectators seem like they were too late to grab a ticket. Nonetheless, they are able to indulge in the sights and sounds, even if it's for only a few minutes. 6:17 p.m. What's an L.A. party without Los Tucanes de Tijuana's 'La Chona?' The norteño anthem gets mixed into T.I. 's 'What You Know.' Unexpected, but somehow serendipitous. 7:25 p.m. I'm starting to seriously question the weight limit on the truck. Though its height is that of a monster truck, it has the feel of a clown car. The truck bed, filled with DJ equipment, is overflowing with people singing along and jumping to the beat. People are perched atop the car, as well as those hanging off its side, in an impressive, partially aerial twerk. I can't even imagine the kind of core strength that it takes. 7:51 p.m. As the party wraps up, Sexyy Red's distinctive vocals overtake the crowd. It feels like one final hurrah. If there's been one consistent feeling that's marked the entire party, it's been an infectious sense of joy. 8:05 p.m. On the way back to the car, people yell 'Happy Juneteenth' out their car windows. My feet are a bit achy and the tops of my shoulders a little sore to the touch, but spirits are still high. Bill Belichick emails show why Jordon Hudson was at fateful CBS interview
There's now more clarity surrounding Bill Belichick's infamous April CBS interview in which Jordon Hudson made an extremely awkward cameo. WRAL News, a Raleigh, North Carolina-based outlet, obtained emails from UNC through a public records request that answered some of the lingering questions about Hudson's role in the UNC head coach's interview and her influence in their relationship. The interview was arranged for Belichick to promote his new book, 'The Art of Winning: Lessons from My Life in Football,' but things took a turn after the 73-year-old was asked how he and his 24-year-old girlfriend met, as Hudson interrupted and shut down the question. Advertisement An email from Belichick explained why Hudson was even there in the first place. 'Jordon was present at the CBS interview because David Kass, the Simon & Schuster publicist, was not there,' Belichick wrote in an email elaborating on Hudson's role at the interview and within the book. 'I included Jordon in the book acknowledgments because she was a creative contributor to the book, including having the idea for formatting the 4 special pages in the book.' 'Jordon assists me with my personal media, which is why I asked UNC to forward media requests (E.G. CBS 60 Minutes) to her. 'Then, the questions shifted to other subjects that were not related to the Art of Winning, which we had outlined as off-limits with my book publicist.' Adding fuel to the fire, Belichick said CBS had set up a camera on Hudson, who deliberately sought a spot to sit off-camera — this was how the viral moments of Hudson were captured. Throughout the nightmare that became of the situation for Belichick and UNC, alumni were even emailing the university with their concern surrounding UNC becoming a 'laughing stock in the sports world because of his young girlfriend.' With all eyes on the relationship and the program for quite some time, Belichick's messages read, 'I don't want to make a wrong move here,' after the interview, as he and the university devised and later released a statement on April 30 to clear the air.
