They're in their 30s. They're getting divorced. And they're talking about it online.
'I'm 35, and I'm starting over.'
Julia Yorks, a New York City screenwriter, often begins her TikToks with this declaration.
Yorks built an online brand sharing her writing and entertainment industry journey, which included bits about her personal life. Until one year ago, that life included a husband and an imminent plan for children. But as Yorks declared on TikTok in the fall of 2024, she had been 'ejected' from her old life — everything was different now, including her marital status.
Yorks's marriage ended in March 2024, but she concealed this life change from her TikTok followers for a while. Instead, she made videos just for herself — usually when she was 'on the floor' in anguish, something she didn't realize 'wasn't just a movie trope' until she spent nights on her bath mat.
At around the six-month mark, Yorks rewatched a video from the early days. 'I don't even know who that person is,' Yorks tells Yahoo Life. 'I just thought, 'I learned so much — I have stuff to share that could be helpful for other people.''
That included 'life lessons that I never thought I would learn or that I could learn,' Yorks says. So, she started sharing them and officially revealed she was getting divorced in a December 2024 video, when she announced her script The 7 Guys You Date Before Marriage made the annual Black List of best unproduced screenplays. (The script, written before the end of her relationship, also featured a woman navigating a breakup.)
These lessons included learning to detach from outcomes — something she only thought she mastered as a worker in the erratic entertainment industry. 'If a door is not opening, you shoving it open will ultimately result in you getting kicked out of that room at some point,' says Yorks.
But the writer also created content around postdivorce joy. She went to Paris by herself. She's learned to 'self-soothe' with long walks and wonderful friends. And while it's bittersweet, she's also taken charge of her reproductive health by freezing her eggs.
And sharing her story has prompted others to tell theirs — whether it's an acquaintance pulling her aside at a party ('I'm also getting divorced!') or people commenting on her posts. ('My marriage ended suddenly/dramatically when I was 35,' one wrote. 'With enough time you will be able to talk about this without crying — that's when I knew I was really starting to heal.')
'I've always said that being divorced at this age really feels like you're on an island, but it is an island that a lot of other people are on,' Yorks says. 'And I think putting this out there online has really helped me to see that.'
In 1970, the median age at first divorce was 30.5 for men and 27.7 for women. By 2020, it had risen to 42.6 and 40.1. And with more people getting married later in life, it can be hard for people who are divorcing in their 30s to find peers — something that can make the end of a marriage particularly difficult.
'Divorce in your 30s often means grieving not just the relationship, but the vision of the future you once had,' Claudia Giolitti-Wright, a New York City marriage and family therapist specializing in therapy for young women, tells Yahoo Life. 'You might grieve the life you thought you'd build together, the idea of growing old with someone, or even the loss of mutual friendships and family connections. There's also the emotional weight of 'starting over' when you expected this relationship to last. But grief and growth go hand in hand. Acknowledging the loss while embracing the possibility of something better is key to moving forward.'
That's why it's significant for social media creators, especially those in their 30s and younger, to share their divorce stories: Seeing others going through the end of a marriage cuts through that stigma that there's some kind of a failure in divorce or that it's an impossible hurdle to overcome.
For social media creator Cora Lakey, connecting with people online made her feel less alone in her own divorce journey. Like Yorks, she was planning for children with her spouse and had even left her corporate job to pursue content creation under the assumption that she would be partially supported by her husband's income. When the marriage ended, her life changed overnight — and sharing that experience with others has been cathartic.
'I've really talked about all of these 'shameful' topics that I've experienced in real life online, and so I didn't think my divorce would be any different,' says Lakey, who began posting on social media a decade ago about her experience with the drug Accutane and has spoken up about her father's death by suicide. Still, she was nervous about how her followers might react to the end of her 'shorter' marriage and knew that commenters could sometimes be 'ruthless' over sensitive topics.
What made her take the leap? The divorce rate in the United States, which hovers at around 33%, per data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 'We need to talk about these topics so that we're more prepared for what marriage looks like,' Lakey tells Yahoo Life.
'There's an unspoken societal script that by your 30s, you should have life figured out, career, marriage, possibly children,' Giolitti-Wright says. 'Divorce disrupts that narrative. And for young women, it can carry a sense of failure or judgment. The stigma can make women feel ashamed for prioritizing their well-being, staying in unhappy marriages longer than they should, or fearing how others will perceive them.'
Like Yorks, Lakey doesn't get overly specific about why her marriage ended, but she does chronicle the emotions she's experienced in the wake of the end of her relationship. That includes discussing the financial strain of having to find a new place to live and the challenges of not being on the timeline she thought she would be when it came to kids.
Turning to the internet allowed her to find a community, which was especially important as no one in her real life could empathize with her situation — they were either her age and 'happily married' or older and divorced for a longer period of time.
'Talking to people who are actively going through it too and sharing emotions has been so helpful for my healing,' she says, noting that her early videos also 'provide a benchmark' for her. 'I want to look back at these videos as a diary and think, 'Wow, I got through this traumatic experience.' If I can do it, anyone can. There's nothing special about me except that I decided to document it online.'
Phlur founder and fashion and beauty influencer Chriselle Lim knows what it's like to come out the other side. In 2021, she decided to walk away from her marriage. She publicly shared the end of that relationship in 2022, a year later, because of the 'online platform of women' she had nurtured beginning in her college years. These women had watched her start a business, get married and have children — so ending her story without acknowledging her divorce didn't feel right.
For Lim, that included posting a photo of her 'divorce cake' to celebrate her separation being finalized after more than two years. 'I do, I did, I'm done, I'm free,' read the icing. The dessert went viral and inspired others to create their own.
She also wanted her followers to know that divorce isn't easy — that it comes with very real financial and emotional implications people may not be prepared for simply because it's so rarely discussed. Lim felt a 'huge responsibility' to her audience, of mainly young women, as 'there's a lack of financial education around what it takes to go through a divorce.'
But Lim still says she was 'nervous' about potential backlash. She hadn't seen many influencers speaking up about their divorce, and since she built a platform sharing her life as a wife and mom, she was worried about how the people who followed her content would view her in the next phase of life.
'To my surprise, they were so incredibly supportive,' she tells Yahoo Life. 'The positivity outweighed the negativity. It showed me that the community really wants me to win. They said things like, 'We've been through all the life phases with you, and you're a smart woman, and we'll never judge you, we know you're an authentic person. So thank you for sharing your real life and your truth with us.''

Where to Eat, Drink and Chill in Kauai's Tastiest Beach Town
Before traveling to Hawaii for the first time, I spent hours browsing through Instagram and TikTok foodie posts. Gathering ideas for all the delicious meals I'd eat, I had high expectations for the food in Poipu Beach, located on the south shore of Kauai. As it turns out, this island's food scene impressed me even more than expected. From nicer, more sophisticated spots like Red Salt Restaurant to quick bar bites at Kalapaki Joe's, check out these best Kauai food and drink spots on your next visit. These must-visit restaurants in Kauai won't let you down. I love Indian food and will make a point to grab it during any trip. This tucked-away restaurant, "That Indian Place", has excellent food and will adjust to your spice preferences. I ordered the butter chicken (mild) and the chicken sagwala (mild), along with some garlic naan bread. The local atmosphere and outdoor dining patio really made this place stand out as one of my favorite spots to eat throughout the whole trip. Top menu items Mango LassiButter ChickenChicken Tikka MasalaChicken SagwalaPaneer Tikka Stop by Brennecke's Beach Broiler as you stroll along Poipu Beach for a lively, vibrant atmosphere. Locals and visitors alike know this top spot as one of the best places for food and drink on Kauai. While crowded, you can grab some phenomenal bites here as well as tropical-style frozen cocktails. I loved the desserts here too. If you plan on doing some appetizer or bar hopping along the main strip, definitely make this restaurant/bar a must-visit spot. Top menu items Seafood Pupu PlatterMango MadnessLava Lava FlowPineapple Rum Upside Down Cake If you want to try a Loco Moco, stop by Red Salt Restaurant, attached to the beautiful Ko'a Kea Resort. This spot served the best Loco Moco I had while in Hawaii. A Loco Moco is a Hawaiian favorite comfort food, made with white rice, gravy, a hamburger patty, and topped with a fried egg. It sounds interesting, but trust me once you try it, you'll want to order it time and time again. The ocean views from this restaurant also set the scene for a nice meal. Top menu items Lemon Pineapple PancakesLoco Moco Acai Bowl Unlike other islands with numerous national chains, Kauai offers a more locally inspired dining scene. This laid-back, down-to-earth island provides numerous options for fresh, local seafood, including mahimahi, ahi tuna, and ono. The island also has many traditional Hawaiian plates to try. I highly recommend trying at least one classic Hawaiian dish, such as the Loco Moco, during your visit. You'll also find spam musubi almost everywhere, another classic food in Kauai. Bride-to-Be Goes Viral for Warning That Getting Married Past 28 Changes Bachelorette Party ‘Vibes' (Exclusive)
After taking part in three of her friends' bachelorette parties, Miriah Hadley had been eagerly awaiting her own However, in a recent TikTok video, the 29-year-old warned that getting married after 28 can seriously affect the 'vibe' of a bachelorette party Now, Hadley is making sure her celebration is something all of her friends can enjoy - no matter what phase in life they are inWhen it comes to weddings, timing can be everything – at least according to one woman who believes getting married past a certain age comes with unexpected downsides. Miriah Hadley, a 29-year-old from Dallas, Texas, is currently in the process of planning her own wedding, and took to TikTok to reflect on how much 'fun' her friends' bachelorette parties were a few years earlier. Back then, everyone was on the same page: no babies, no dietary restrictions, no 10 p.m. curfews. But now, with some friends pregnant, others already mothers, and a few living alcohol-free, Hadley is realizing that her own celebration will have to strike a different tone. 'I originally envisioned my bachelorette party in the wine country of Texas – something light and fun, where we'd hop between wineries, enjoy good wine, laugh a lot, and just celebrate together,' Hadley tells PEOPLE exclusively. 'It felt like the perfect mix of relaxation and celebration.' Since getting engaged in February 2025, the soon-to-be-bride is planning on having her bachelorette party in October, followed by her wedding on New Years Eve. Used to lively activities such as boat rides, loud music, nonstop dancing and drinks at previous bachelorette parties she's attended, Hadley was eagerly looking forward to her own girls' celebration. However, since most of her friends tied the knot between ages 25 and 28, her bachelorette will most likely look very different. 'One of the more challenging aspects of getting married past 28 – especially being from the South, where many of my peers are already married, settled down, and starting families – is feeling a bit out of sync with your social circle,' she explains. Most of Hadley's close friends have been married for a few years and are either starting to plan for a family or already have children, making late-night outings, casual drinks, or even regular meetups increasingly difficult to coordinate. Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. 'As things started coming together, I realized that about five out of my eight bridesmaids may not be able to drink either due to the fact that they will be pregnant or other personal reasons. And I'll be honest—it gave me a bit of a 'what's the point?' moment,' she admits. 'Not because I think alcohol is necessary for a good time, but because the original vision just doesn't align anymore.' Nevertheless, Hadley has chosen to take a positive approach to the situation. She's come to realize that the true purpose of a bachelorette party isn't about the event itself, but about being surrounded by friends who love and respect her. 'I'm grateful that I have amazing, lifelong friends that I know will show up and support me regardless,' she shares. 'I'm now shifting my mindset to focus on how we can still have a great experience that fits everyone. At the end of the day, it's about creating memories and celebrating love, not sticking to a script.' What she is most excited about is the energy – simply spending time with her friends, letting loose, dancing, and creating those "remember when" moments they'll laugh about for years to come. Hadley intends to keep the bachelorette party fun and inclusive by planning a mix of shared experiences like a private chef dinner, a playful lingerie party, and a relaxing spa day. She's also considering sticking with the original wine tour by choosing wineries that offer mocktails and non-alcoholic options so no one feels left out. 'It's not about comparison or regret, but it does require a shift in how you manage friendships and find community,' Hadley tells PEOPLE. 'At the same time, I've learned to really value this season for what it offers – new beginnings, clarity, and learning how to support friends in different phases of life.' This uses lightweight ~tubing~ technology to wrap around lashes and give them a natural-looking, smudge-proof extension so good it almost looks fake. The real boon, though, is how easily the "tubes" slide off in clean, easy swipes at the end of the day when you're washing your face — absolutely no smudging, over-scrubbing, or special eye makeup removal products required. Medicube Turmeric Overnight Wrapping Peel Off Mask, which has already made itself a TikTok sensation — unsurprising, since the K-Beauty brand Medicube knocks it out of the park again and again. This mask goes on before bed and uses hydrolyzed collagen, vitamin C, and turmeric to help even out skin tone and improve elasticity. MagicMinerals AirBrush Foundation, which lives up to its name and THEN some — one quick spray of the foundation on the included brush, and it glides so smoothly and subtly over your skin texture that you'll feel like a makeup artist did it for you. Bonus — unlike a lot of toning products, these are super gentle and sensitive skin–friendly! Essence Loose Setting Powder Trio for three handy products for less than $5 — it's sectioned into different powders for brightening, color-correcting, and mattifying, so you can mix and match the shades to personalize your coverage based on your skin's needs. Jergens Natural Glow Firming Self Tanner Body Lotion gives you a gradually-building, vacation-worthy ~sunkissed glow~ over the course of just a few days. Dae's Hair Cactus Fruit 3-In-1 Styling Cream & Taming Wand, which is basically the brand's "holy grail," TikTok-famous styling cream in the form of a mascara wand. This versatile lil' tool helps you carefully target flyaways, style edges, and smooth frizz. This hydrating cleanser removes waterproof makeup and sunscreen with ease, has an ohhhh-so-satisfying lather, and leaves skin moisturized after use. A pack of cult-favorite Clean Skin Club Clean Towels — these ultra-soft, chemical-free disposable towels are ideal for drying your face or pairing with a makeup remover or face wash to gently remove makeup at the end of the day. A lot of folks with sensitive skin *swear* by these, particularly because it helps prevent exposing their skin to bacteria that may collect in ordinary reusable towels. E.l.f. Glow Reviver Melting Lip Balm for all the ultra fans of Summer Fridays, Rhode, and Laneige whose bank accounts are begging them to put a stop to the lippie madness. These new deliciously tinted, moisturizing, buildable glosses are just as buttery and decadent as the balms that inspired them, for a fraction of the price. (Brb, drowning myself in the "Strawberry Shortcake" and "Vanilla Toffee" flavors.)
