Ex-Arsenal star Alexandre Lacazette burgled as thieves steal cash and jewellery

Daily Mirror19-05-2025

Alexandre Lacazette was saying farewell to his boyhood club Lyon and had a send-off to remember with two goals against Angers, but the game was bittersweet as his home was been raided by robbers while he was playing
Former Arsenal star Alexandre Lacazette was the victim of a burglary while playing his final game for Lyon this weekend, according to reports in France. The 33-year-old had a farewell to remember as he netted a brace in a 2-0 win over Angers, first from the penalty spot before tapping home a second.
It was the perfect way for Lacazette to say goodbye as he was lauded by fans, but his special night was quickly marred as he later discovered his home had been raided by robbers while he was on the pitch.

French outlet Le Progres claims Lacazette's house was broken into around half an hour after Lyon's game kicked off at 9pm local time, with two robbers involved. The house was empty at the time and the men managed to get inside through a service shaft.

The thieves are said to have accessed a safe inside his property in Lyon's fifth district and taken jewellery and cash - with the total value of good stolen said to be worth tens of thousands of pounds.
The two men were captured on CCTV footage after the break-in was reported at around 1.30am in the morning, with police now launching an investigation.
Footballers in Lyon have often been victims of burglary after stars Karl Toko-Ekambi, Jeff Reine-Adelaide and Dejan Lovren had their homes raided in 2022. The following year, left-back Nicolas Tagliafico saw his garden broken into by thieves before entering his home.
Lacazette's own experience comes during what should be a happy time as he reflects on making 391 appearances for Lyon, scoring 201 times across two spells.
He started his career with the club as a teenager before joining Arsenal in 2017, where he scored 71 goals in 206 games before returning to Lyon in 2022.

At his last game, fans honoured him with a huge tifo of the player at the Angers game before his team-mates gave him a guard of honour - clapping as he walked under an arch that read "Merci Alex".
Lacazette will leave as a free agent and has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League after reportedly rejecting their advances last summer.

London City Lionesses make statement signing of Daniëlle van de Donk

London City Lionesses have made a statement of intent following promotion to the Women's Super League by completing the signing of Netherlands midfielder Daniëlle van de Donk. The independently-run club, who will play in the WSL for the first time next season after winning the Women's Championship title in May, have acquired the 33-year-old on a free transfer from record eight-time European champions Lyon, recently renamed as OL Lyonnes, following the conclusion of her contract. OL Lyonnes are, like London City Lionesses, owned by the American businesswoman, Michele Kang. Van de Donk won the WSL title winner with Arsenal in 2019 and was also part of the Netherlands squad that won the 2017 Women's European Championship and reached the final of the 2019 World Cup. She has signed a two-year contract with London City, who have made no secret of their ambitions to disrupt the established big-name of women's football in England. 'I'm feeling really good,' said Van de Donk, who is London City's first signing of the transfer window. 'It's such a nice environment to be in, the club really appeals to me, it reminds me of a little family, and I want to be a part of it. The project that London City have, it's different but in a good way. London City have to battle for everything and that's my style.' News of Van de Donk's return to the WSL came as the Football Association formally approved the expansion of the division from 12 to 14 clubs from the 2026-27 season.

Arsenal to break seven-year transfer rule for Benjamin Sesko after £60m deal

Arsenal are interested in RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko and are taking a different approach to the transfer window as Mikel Arteta looks to solve his side's problems in attack Arsenal have taken a specific approach to their transfer dealings since Mikel Arteta took over as Gunners boss. The club targeting RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko would represent a departure from Arsenal's usual tactics as they look to sign a player from the Bundesliga for the first time since 2018. The Gunners may have bought players from across Europe and even the Brazilian market in recent years, but the Premier League has remained the preferred shopping destination. From Aaron Ramsdale to Ben White, Arsenal have often turned to players with experience in England. That is because Premier League proven players are a known quantity and are more likely to succeed if they are already performing well in the top-flight. ‌ Predicting the success of players changing country and league style is a trickier task. There's a general consensus that those from La Liga will fare well. Meanwhile, Arsenal have primarily targeted defenders from Serie A. Ligue 1 is full of young talent and South America is a similar treasure trove of promising players. However, Arsenal have chosen to steer clear of signing players from Germany. ‌ Arsenal's squad is a blend of academy players and a strong Premier League core - White and Declan Rice have elevated their game, while Kai Havertz has adapted well. Even Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus played their roles expertly for 12 to 18 months after arriving from Manchester City. New additions to the league have come in the form of Thomas Partey and Martin Odegaard from either side of Madrid, as well as centre-back partnership Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba signing from French clubs. Riccardo Calafiori and Takehiro Tomiyasu caught the eye in Serie A before making their moves to north London. However, Arsenal have not signed a first team player from the Bundesliga since 2018. A move for Sesko could change that. Arsenal missed out on deal for the striker months ago ahead of the Euros and his stock has continued to rise, as has his price. The last players to join the club from Germany were Benrd Leno and Sokratis seven summers ago, but the move for Sesko is more akin to Arsenal's £60million move for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang earlier that year. Aubameyang proved successful but had already established himself on the elite stage, unlike Sesko. He had netted 13, 16, 25, and then 31 Bundesliga goals in his four full seasons at Borussia Dortmund before departing with a record of 13 in 16. Aubameyang also had a Champions League record to brag about and was considerably older than Sesko, being in his mid-20s. Sesko, on the other hand, is still relatively young compared to Aubameyang. There's an eagerness to tap into his raw potential before it fully blossoms, but this approach carries its own risks. ‌ Now 22, Sesko put together another impressive scoring season in Germany and showed exactly why he has attracted interest from elsewhere. However, there are concerns about how Sesko might adjust to England. When the striker could prove pivotal to Arsenal's title hopes, there are various factors to consider. Given the success of players moving from Germany to England, it's understandable why there is caution. ‌ Havertz's move to Chelsea from Bayer Leverkusen in 2020 is a prime example. Initially, opposition players and his own manager pushed him around the pitch in search of the perfect position. Havertz eventually settled into the role of a striker. Arsenal had hopes of converting him back into an attacking No.8 from midfield, but he has been forced to cover up front instead, a job he now performs well. He bulked up, lost some of his flair, and is now a functional target man at times. He's strong in the air but lacks the finesse he initially brought with him. Sesko probably wouldn't have to make such a drastic change as he is already a striker, but there will be a period of adaptation. Both Timo Werner and Christopher Nkunku signed for Chelsea from RB Leipzig and struggled to hit the mark for various reasons. Dominik Szoboszlai has had more luck at Liverpool but plays in a deeper role. Arsenal seem determined to do something they haven't done for seven years in their attempt to purchase Sesko from the Bundesliga. Before the signing of Aubameyang, Arsenal's last transfers from Germany were Lukas Podolski in 2012 and Per Mertesacker the year before. Arsenal have a peculiar relationship with Bundesliga players, but they hope Sesko can rekindle the spark. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. The stats behind Lewis-Skelly's breakout campaign

An imminent new contract and a place on the shortlist for PFA Young Player of the Season are reward for Myles Lewis-Skelly's breakout season with Arsenal and 18-year-old was a ball-carrying central midfielder in Arsenal's academy but has excelled at left-back, with licence to step into midfield, since making his first Premier League start in running power and physical strength are among his key attributes. He was only dribbled past once in the Premier League, the best record of any player to have made at least 15 starts. He also won the most duels (six) per 90 minutes and ranked third for fouls won (3.1) per background as a midfielder is evidenced by a 93.6% pass accuracy, the fifth-highest figure in the division among all players to have featured for at least 1,000 minutes during England head coach Thomas Tuchel said after giving Lewis-Skelly his first England call-up in March, "he's nothing but impressive".
