It's a Smart car, Jim, but not as we know it... We drive the funky new #5 SUV - with 637bhp!

In many ways, the #5 could not be further removed from the snack-sized Smart cars of yore, but its designers claim to have taken inspiration from the Fortwo's innovative packaging – loftily referred to as the 'body space index' – to maximise roominess.
And so it proves: with the wheels pushed right to the corners of the body, a totally flat floor and a pleasingly traditional straight-backed silhouette, the #5 has about as cavernous and airy a cabin as its possible to offer in this footprint.
Boot space (630 litres out back and up to 74 in the frunk), head room and oddment storage (there are 32 cubbies dotted around) are all strong suits, and I had a comfortable 20cm of leg room when sat behind my 5ft 10in self - making the #5 more on a par with cars from the class above for back-seat refinement.
It feels of a higher calibre materially compared with its smaller stablemates, too, with decently plush materials used for all the main touchpoints and a reassuring sense of solidity to its (admittedly sparse) physical switchgear.
I reckon the mock carbonfibre trimmings, microfibre upholstery and red accents of the Brabus edition do little but cheapen what is otherwise a really thoughtfully arranged and designed cabin – if a little heavy on the #5's trademark lozenge motifs – but overall it's a treatment that legitimises Smart's premium aspirations.
Inevitably, an over-reliance on the 13in touchscreen for the primary vehicle controls is a weak point, but Smart has responded to customer feedback from the earlier cars and made various functions – like the climate stack, ADAS and audio – quicker to access from the home screen, which helps to minimise eyes-off time. The driver assist functions themselves are irritating and distracting, but no more so than in any other new car, and easy enough to turn off.
A same-sized touchscreen for the front passenger is standard from Pro+ trim upwards (testament to the influence of Chinese consumer demands), which feels totally unnecessary. I found it a distracting presence on the move and can't quite imagine how bad your conversational skills would have to be on a road trip to force your companion to pop their headphones in and load up a film. It's technology for technology's sake and completely unwarranted in a mainstream family crossover. Investment could be better allocated elsewhere.
The same goes for the infotainment interfaces more broadly, which have been overly gamified to the extent that customising your settings is reminiscent of setting up a player profile on a Nintendo Wii, and once again Smart has seen fit to introduce a digital mascot – this time a lion called Leo – which does the sum total of absolutely nothing. It's difficult to know how much crossover there is between people who appreciate this sort of whimsical digitisation and those who are in the market for a £40,000-plus premium SUV - but I'd wager not much.

THE UK's biggest energy supplier is launching its first electric vehicle home charger and you can get your hands on it for free. Octopus Energy has designed and built its own EV charger which will provide charging for as little as 2p per mile and new users will get heaps of free charging. 2 Named Octopus Charge and launching in August, new customers who sign up will get a 5,000 free miles bonus. The offer is only available to the first 100 people, so EV drivers will have to be quick to snap up the offer. Combined with Octopus' Drive Pack tariff, customers can get unlimited charging for just £30 a month. The saving don't just end there, because those with Octopus solar panels can power their EVs with any surplus solar electricity. The new EV charger has built-in 4G and a uniquely designed charging cable holster so it can fit snugly in tight spaces. 'Charging at home is already better than queueing up at the petrol station – and now we've made it even simpler," said Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, chief product officer at Octopus Energy. 'Octopus Energy was the first energy company to launch a smart tariff, an EV tariff, an export tariff, and our very own heat pump." She added: "We're delighted to add Octopus Charge to our stable, initially designed to work seamlessly with Intelligent Octopus Go, and with other features to follow shortly.' Octopus Charge will first be exclusively available for customers of Octopus' EV leasing business, Octopus Electric Vehicles, before being launched to all Octopus Energy customers in August. UK motor claims inflation is set remain elevated over the next year after total payouts hit a record high in 2024, according to EY analysis. However, the group still expects rates paid by customers to fall thanks to a competitive market backdrop, thereby putting further pressure on insurers' margins. EY analysts forecast the average cost of motor insurance claims to rise by around 6 per cent in 2025 and 2026, with damage inflation staying high and bodily injury inflation within the 3 to 5 per cent long-term range. Motor claims hit a record £11.7billion in 2024, according to the Association of British Insurers, with the average claim up 13 per cent year-on-year at £4,900. The predicted increase comes despite a 'significant decline' in the frequency of claims, EY said. It credited this to better car safety, lower speed limits, workplace behaviour changes, and even a reluctance among motorists to make claims as a result of greater insurance costs in the UK. EY expects motor insurers' margins to hit breakeven levels this year before slipping into an underwriting loss of around 107 per cent in 2026 as rates lag behind claims inflation. A combined operating ratio (CoR) exceeding 100 indicates that insurance companies are making an underwriting loss, while a ratio below that figure denotes a profit. The UK motor insurance industry had a CoR of 97 per cent in 2024, despite paying out a record £11.7billion in claims. This was still a considerable improvement on the 113 per cent recorded the previous year when soaring claims, labour and parts costs outpaced the growth in premiums. New business rates in the UK car insurance sector shrank by 14 per cent to £757 last year, according to the Confused/WTW Motor premium index. It noted that the rates of decline had slowed from 7 per cent in the first quarter to 2.6 per cent in the following three months. WTW suggested this could be the result of greater consolidation in the UK motor insurance market. Aviva is likely to finalise the £3.7billion takeover of Direct Line Group, which is home to Churchill Insurance and vehicle recovery provider Green Flag, in July following approval from the UK's Competition and Markets Authority. Belgian insurer Ageas also agreed in April to acquire Esure from private equity giant Bain Capital in a £1.4billion deal that will create Britain's third-largest home and motor insurer.

He strongly hinted at the need for a more exciting future design, as well as a look unique to major markets, to drive more interest in the Honda HR-V rival. 'We don't have the perfect Corolla Cross for Europe, in the sense it's a global model,' said Andrea Carlucci, head of product strategy and marketing at Toyota Europe, when speaking with Auto News. 'If we bring more European zest, sales will be up.' He specifically suggested that designing a single model to cater to both Japanese and American tastes has come at the expense of what Europeans want. The next Corolla Cross, then, could get unique designs for Europe and the USA. It wouldn't be the first time a major model gets a unique design for these two regions – Honda already sells a Euro HR-V that looks completely different to the American one. Carlucci's comments suggest that the next Corolla Cross will receive a much sportier design, and as we've seen recently with the Prius, Toyota has the ability to quickly transform a nameplate from bland to glam. More Power Would Be Welcome, Too Source: Toyota In America, the current Corolla Cross has a 169-horsepower engine. Paired with a CVT, acceleration is both languid and boomy. Take the Mazda CX-30, for example; its base model makes 191 hp, and the conventional six-speed automatic also makes for a sportier driving experience. Then again, Americans don't seem to be as sensitive to the Corolla Cross's ordinary look. In the first quarter of 2025, sales of Toyota's smallest SUV in this market were up by 45.2% relative to 2024. The popularity of the 196-hp hybrid helps, too – it's one of the most efficient crossovers around, and isn't as slow as the base model. But Toyota has clearly not yet unlocked the potential of the Corolla Cross. If the next gen could mix a Prius-like makeover with hybrid-only powertrains (as the 2026 RAV4 has done), it could become yet another best-seller for the company.
