Nadma: Smart's selection as Russia's SAR team mentor a great honour

PUCHONG: The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) has described the selection of the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (Smart) to be a mentor for Russia's RUS-03 search and rescue team as a great honour for Malaysia. Nadma director-general Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah said the six-day training, from June 15 to 20, is part of RUS-03's preparation for the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG)'s reassessment exercise. "Russia's decision to appoint Malaysia as the mentor for the RUS-03 training is a great honour for the country, recognising the excellence demonstrated during past search and rescue missions, particularly in Myanmar and previously in Turkiye," he said. He spoke to reporters after receiving a visit from Russia's Emergency Situations Minister, Colonel General Alexander Kurenkov, at the Smart headquarters on Thursday (June 19). Abdul Halim said at the same time, Smart is also undergoing the INSARAG recertification process for next year, adding that the team was first certified in 2016. "It is no easy feat to maintain the (INSARAG) certification. I was directly involved in 2016, and now, a decade later, I have the opportunity to be part of it again. But it's even more challenging as all eyes are on Malaysia, and the expectations are higher," he said. He said the Russian team was highly impressed by Smart's level of professionalism, determination and training approach, particularly in operational techniques and current best practices. Abdul Halim said the joint training also paved the way for collaborations, with Russia inviting Malaysia to join forces in several areas of expertise and offering opportunities for short-term training and study programmes. "This matter will be conveyed to the Public Service Department as it aligns with the government's strategic thrust to strengthen national disaster preparedness and management," he added. – Bernama

Egypt: Cabinet approves establishment of Jarjoub special economic zone

Arab Finance: The cabinet has approved a draft presidential decree to establish the Jarjoub special economic zone in accordance with the special economic zones law No. 83 of 2002, as per a statement on June 18th. The zone will be located on Egypt's northwest coast, covering approximately 402,200 acres. The cabinet also approved a proposal by State Grid Corporation of China to develop two solar power projects with a total capacity of 900 megawatts, 500 megawatts in Minya and 400 megawatts in the Wahat region. The projects are part of the government's efforts to expand renewable energy capacity under Egypt's 2040 energy strategy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. In a separate decision, the cabinet approved renewing the contract with smart card companies Smart and AVIT for one year, from July 1st, 2025, to June 30th, 2026, under the same transaction terms. The contract will continue to support the implementation of the subsidized bread and commodity exchange system using smart ration cards. The cabinet further approved proceeding with legislation to grant a concession to finance, design, build, develop, manage, and operate the Ro-Ro terminal superstructure at Sokhna Port in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone). Historic Inglewood Standing Proud With Help From NPDC Heritage Fund

The makeover of Inglewood's historic commercial heart for the town's 150th anniversary is continuing with help from NPDC's Heritage Building Fund. Originally built on the corner of Matai and Kelly streets in 1875, Fern Lodge is a two-storey building burned down and was rebuilt in 1905. The $30,000 grant from NPDC's Heritage Building Fund contributed to much needed repairs to the aging weatherboards, window frames and other fixtures as well as repainting the entire outside of the building, said owner Mike Smart. 'Inglewood is the hub of Taranaki with a lot of people coming in from all directions. The town's heritage buildings make it a place where people want to stop and visit, and they make it a great place to live. We're proud of Inglewood's historic character, so the funding is important to our economy and community identity,' said Mr Smart. NPDC District Planning Supervisor Lauren O'Byrne said it was important to protect and celebrate the district's heritage, especially in a town with as many historic buildings as Inglewood. 'Our history is essential to sustaining our district's prosperity. Looking after our heritage buildings ensures it remains a place where people want to live, work and invest and whānau want to raise their tamariki. The heritage building grants also help local jobs and businesses who do the work,' said Ms O'Byrne. The fund also contributed to sprucing up the Railway Hotel, built in 1876 on the corner of Rata and Moa streets, and the Deem and Shearer building, better known now as Caffe Windsor on the corner of Matai and Kelly streets, which dates from 1875. Applications to the fund are open until 4 July and building and business owners can apply through the NPDC website: Built, Cultural and Natural Heritage Protection Funds FAST FACTS Inglewood/Kōhanga Moa was established in 1875 with many of the first European inhabitants coming from Britain, East Prussia (now in Poland), Denmark and Switzerland. The railway from New Plymouth reached the town in 1876 and its railway station is the oldest in Aotearoa still in its original location. Sacred Heart Catholic Church, built by Polish immigrants on Standish Street in 1899, received $25,000 towards the cost of repainting the Category A protected building in 2023. Inglewood Library, one of five NPDC community libraries, celebrated its centenary in 2024. Inglewood's historic town hall was built in 1913 and can still be booked for events. Inglewood has 12 protected heritage structures in the 143 protected structures across New Plymouth District.

Wizards looking to trade former Boston Celtics guard (report)

Marcus Smart was expected to be a veteran leader on an up-and-coming Grizzlies squad, but his stint didn't end up working out in Memphis. So, at February's trade deadline, he was shipped to the rebuilding Wizards to finish out the season in what was effectively a salary dump. Smart could be on the move again this summer. Per NBA insider Matt Moore, the Wizards are looking to trade Smart to a contender, though there's been little interest thus far. That doesn't mean Washington can't eventually find a suitor as teams look for players after the draft and free agency. Advertisement Smart, 31, is in the final year of his contract, making $21.6 million for the 2025-26 season. He averaged 9.0 points, 2.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists this past season in 34 games (seven starts) between the Grizzlies and Wizards. Staying healthy has been the issue for Smart in recent seasons. But if a contender is looking for guard depth, Smart could be a formidable option. He doesn't stuff the stat sheet, but as Celtics fans know, he can elevate his game in the playoffs. Smart does have some unpredictability to his game, but when it comes to being an emotional leader, Boston fans embraced him during his time with the Celtics. Smart spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Celtics after being drafted sixth overall in 2014, making the playoffs every single year. There were impressive highs, including the 2022 NBA Finals run. But after the Celtics fell short to the Heat in the 2023 East Finals, the front office elected to go a different direction. Smart was included in the Kristaps Porzingis three-team trade with the Grizzlies and Wizards that also netted the Celtics draft assets. While the Grizzlies looked like a potential contender, they've taken step backs in recent seasons. Smart only played in 39 total games in Memphis in 1.5 seasons as he couldn't stay healthy. Advertisement It's been a minute since Smart has shown what he's able to do on an NBA court. There were some light flashes in Washington, but for a young, rebuilding team, the spotlight isn't as bright like during the Celtics' deep playoff runs. So the Wizards will look to potentially move Smart as the veteran guard will hope to build up his career again. More Celtics content Read the original article on MassLive.
