Anthony Ramos calls out Madonna for being on iPad 'the whole time' during one of his 'Hamilton' performances

Anthony Ramos did not throw away his shot. The 33-year-old former Hamilton star recently recalled Madonna giving him quite the fright when he spotted her in the audience during one of his performances of the acclaimed show on stage. "The most terrifying was Madonna with her iPad in her face," Ramos said during his Thursday appearance on Watch What Happens Live while host Andy Cohen peppered him with a string of "scary questions." "She was like this the whole time," Ramos continued, mimicking someone staring down at an iPad. "I'm like, 'Damn, shorty, if you're not enjoying it that much, the door's right there. You ain't gotta stay here.'" Ramos was part of the original cast of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony-winning Broadway musical, playing the dual roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton from July 2015 until November 2016. After leaving Hamilton, Ramos took on the lead role in the film adaptation of In the Heights, Miranda's breakout 2008 Broadway hit, which also earned widespread critical praise. Ramos continued building his career, nabbing a starring turn in 2023's Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, 2024's Twisters, and several other TV and movie projects. The original Broadway cast of Hamilton reunited on June 8 during the 78th Annual Tony Awards to celebrate the musical's 10th anniversary. Since its Broadway debut in 2015, the show, inspired by the life of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, has become a cultural phenomenon, shattering box office records and earning a record-breaking 16 Tony nominations and winning 11 trophies, including Best Musical. Ramos did not say when Madonna attended the Hamilton performance. However, in 2015, Playbill reported that creator and star Miranda banned Madonna from visiting the cast backstage after an April 18 performance of the show when it was still Off Broadway due to her poor theater etiquette. In a now-deleted tweet, the Pulitzer Prize–winning lyricist wrote, "Tonight was the first time I asked stage management NOT to allow a celebrity (who was texting all through Act 2) backstage. #noselfieforyou." The Playbill story also reported that Madonna had arrived late to that night's performance and that she was seen using a phone throughout the show. Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly

Anthony Ramos claims Madonna was on her iPad ‘the whole time' during Hamilton performance

Anthony Ramos says he once caught Madonna distracted on her iPad throughout the 'whole' production of Hamilton. The Broadway star, 33, originated the lead roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony-winning musical in 2015. On Thursday's episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Ramos was asked who the 'most terrifying celebrity [was] to spot in the audience' during his 15-month run. After taking a brief moment to think, he named Madonna, who he said had an 'iPad in her face.' 'She was like this the whole time,' he recalled, mimicking the pop icon looking down at an iPad in her lap. 'I was like, 'Damn, shawty. If you're not enjoying it that much, you know the door's right there. You ain't gotta stay here!'' Ramos laughed. The Independent has contacted Madonna's representative for comment. Ramos, who rose to fame with his dual portrayal of Laurens and Hamilton on Broadway, recently reunited with his former Hamilton castmates, including Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Jonathan Groff, Christopher Jackson, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Leslie Odom, Jr., Okieriete Onaodowan, and Phillipa Soo, at the 2025 Tony Awards. In celebration of the hit musical's tenth anniversary, they performed a medley of songs from the soundtrack, including 'Non-Stop,' 'My Shot,' 'History Has Its Eyes on You,' and 'The Room Where It Happens.' Ramos wasn't given a main part in the performance, leading to confusion among viewers. Hamilton, which opened on Broadway in 2015, received a record-breaking 16 nominations at the 70th Tony Awards and ultimately won 11 awards, including Best Musical. Following his time on Hamilton, Ramos went on to lead Miranda's 2021 film adaptation of his other hit musical, In the Heights. The singer and actor has since continued releasing his own music and starring in movies like 2024's Twisters and Spike Lee's newest crime-thriller, Highest 2 Lowest. According to IMDb, Ramos will star in six upcoming projects, including thriller-drama House of Dynamite, out October 24, as well as the big-screen adaptation of popular children's series Bob the Builder. He will portray the titular Bob in the Jennifer Lopez-produced movie.

Madonna Exposed By 'Hamilton' Star Anthony Ramos For Disrespectful Audience Behavior

may be the Queen of Pop, but her alleged conduct during a "Hamilton" performance has Broadway star calling her out nearly a decade later. During a candid appearance on "Watch What Happens Live!," Ramos, who starred in the original 2015 Broadway cast as both John Laurens and Alexander Hamilton's ill-fated son Philip, recalled a particularly "terrifying" celebrity audience member, Madonna. "The most terrifying was Madonna with her iPad in her face," Ramos said bluntly when host Andy Cohen asked about star-studded audiences. "She was like this the whole time," he added, mimicking her staring at a device. "I was like, 'Damn, shorty. If you not enjoying it that much, you know the door's right there. You ain't gotta stay here.'" Ramos isn't the first "Hamilton" cast member to shade Madonna over the infamous 2015 incident. Creator appeared to reference her in a now-deleted tweet at the time, writing, "Tonight was the first time I asked stage management NOT to allow a celebrity (who was texting all through Act 2) backstage. #noselfieforyou." Although Miranda didn't name names, rumors quickly swirled that he was referring to Madonna. The speculation was so widespread that her publicist publicly denied the claims, saying, "It's not true. She was invited backstage four different times," and that she "texted post-show when they were doing their fundraising pitch. Madonna had already made a generous donation." Still, other "Hamilton" cast members didn't hold back. , who played King George III, slammed Madonna directly in a 2015 interview with Dot429, saying, "You couldn't miss it from the stage. It was a black void of the audience in front of us, and her face there perfectly lit by the light of her iPhone through three-quarters of the show." He added that she wasn't invited backstage because "that b-tch was on her phone." Before she was called out by "Hamilton" stars for allegedly texting through a Broadway performance, Madonna faced backlash for another phone faux pas, and this one reportedly got her banned from a movie theater. Back in 2013, the Queen of Pop made headlines after allegedly texting during a screening of "12 Years a Slave" at the New York Film Festival. According to Page Six at the time, when another guest asked her to put her phone away, Madonna snapped back, "It's for business…enslaver!" The screening featured the powerful historical drama starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, and Brad Pitt, a film that tells the harrowing true story of Solomon Northup, a free man sold into slavery in the 1800s. Despite her alleged outburst, sources told Us Weekly that Madonna appeared emotional during the film. "Some people are shocked by this, because Madonna was visibly tearing up," one insider said. "Everybody there thought that she was very moved by it." In fact, she seemed eager to show her support for the project afterward, reportedly posing for photos with the film's director Steve McQueen while dressed in an all-black lace ensemble, gloves and all. Still, the controversy sparked enough noise that Alamo Drafthouse CEO Tim League tweeted that Madonna had been banned from their theaters unless she issued a public apology. While she never addressed the incident directly, the moment became part of a growing pattern of criticism aimed at the "Material Girl" for her screen-time habits during live performances, one that would flare up again in 2015 when "Hamilton" stars accused her of texting throughout the second act. Though she has a long history with Broadway, starring in "Speed-the-Plow" in 1988 and famously portraying Eva Perón in the 1996 film adaptation of "Evita," her performances have sparked polarizing opinions. Broadway legend , who originated the role of Eva on stage, once said, "Madonna is a movie killer. She's dead behind the eyes… She cannot act her way out of a paper bag." While Madonna's music career remains iconic, her off-stage reputation, at least in theater circles, continues to stir up drama worthy of its own Broadway plot twist.
