Ahmedabad Crash: Transport Committee May Discuss Air Safety Concerns, Likely To Summon Airlines

Representatives from airlines, Airports Authority of India & CISF may be asked to depose before the panel, apart from companies running helicopter services in religious locations
Members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture are likely to raise broader concerns surrounding air safety in light of the Ahmedabad flight crash and the helicopter crash in Uttarakhand's Kedarnath.
Several members have already urged committee chairperson Sanjay Jha to prioritise the issue. It is learnt that the Jha-led panel will formally decide to take up this matter of urgent public concern and seek that the Ministry of Civil Aviation officials, BCAS and the DGCA appear before it.
The committee is aware of the ongoing investigation in the Air India crash case and therefore, would not think it wise to single out this case, the sources said.
Representatives from various airlines, Airports Authority of India (AAI), and CISF are expected to be asked to depose before the panel. The companies running helicopter services in various religious locations like Mata Vaishnav Devi and Kedarnath are also expected to be present before the committee.
'The recent crash has been very disturbing and with all kind of theories floating, we want to understand what the SOP really is in such cases and what are technicalities and technical challenges, role of the pilot etc," a source said.
The committee also has BJP MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy as its member. Rudy has been the former civil aviation minister in the Vajpayee government and is also a commercial pilot.
Even after the Ahmedabad crash, a series of technical snags was reported onboard the Boeing Dreamliner aircraft over the last 48 hours, leading to several questions about the safety of passengers.
Meanwhile, after the Kedarnath crash on Sunday, operations of Aryan Aviation for the Char Dham Yatra were suspended with immediate effect. Two helicopters belonging to M/s TransBharat Aviation—VT-TBC (PIC: Capt. Yogesh Grewal, CPL(H)-1453) and VT-TBF (PIC: Capt. Jitender Harjai, CPL(H)-1046)—were found to have been airborne under similar unsuitable weather conditions. Accordingly, the licenses of both pilots have been suspended for six months.
A high-level enquiry has also been ordered both in the case of the Ahmedabad crash and the Uttarakhand crash. Apart from this, the Centre also set up a high-level committee led by the home secretary on cases like the Ahmedabad crash.

BJP undermining its own govt on Yoga Day, alleges Jully

Jaipur: Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully, Friday, accused the governing BJP of creating administrative confusion by bypassing its own govt's orders for International Yoga Day on June 21. He alleged that the party's interference in official functioning exposed how it was "side-lining and dominating" the state govt. On June 17, the Bhajan Lal Sharma-led govt, through the cabinet secretariat, directed ministers to oversee Yoga Day events in their charge districts to ensure smooth coordination. However, the BJP state unit issued its own list on June 19, assigning ministers to different venues — often outside their official jurisdictions. "This is a glaring example of how BJP is interfering in governance. Ministers are now caught between two sets of instructions — one from the govt and another from the party," Jully said, claiming it showed the party's intent to control administration through political diktats. For example, deputy CM Diya Kumari, who was supposed to be in Ajmer or Beawar, will now attend the City Palace event in Jaipur. Deputy CM Prem Chand Bairwa has been asked to attend a Jaipur event instead of Bhilwara or Rajsamand. Cabinet minister Jogaram Patel, officially in-charge of Jaipur, is assigned to Jodhpur. Ministers like Kirori Lal Meena and Gajendra Singh Khimsar are also prioritising BJP-listed venues.

NMC Reappoints Silent ‘Swachh' Ambassadors, Overlooks Real Ground-Level Champions

Nagpur: In yet another instance of tokenism trumping accountability, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Friday reappointed 10 individuals as Swachh Bharat brand ambassadors — despite the fact that most of them were inactive throughout the past year. Shockingly, some didn't even attend their own reappointment ceremony. According to insiders and civic records, barring a civic activist and a homemaker — both of whom consistently supported NMC-led cleanliness campaigns — the rest of the ambassadors neither showed up for official initiatives nor launched any public awareness activities independently. Despite this, the civic body once again handed out the honorary titles, ignoring grassroots workers who have been relentlessly promoting hygiene, waste segregation, and sustainable practices in the city. A senior NMC official summed up the frustration: "We see housing society groups conducting composting workshops, young volunteers organising street cleaning drives, and NGOs educating slum clusters on segregation. But these names — mostly influencers, radio jockeys, bloggers, and fitness coaches — have done virtually nothing for the cause." Shockingly, at least three of the reappointed ambassadors did not even turn up for the installation event. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 6 sätt att gå i pension bekvämt med 3 000 000 kr Fisher Invest. Norden Undo Yet, their absence didn't deter additional municipal commissioner Vasumana Pant and chief sanitation officer Dr Gajendra Mahalle from handing out offer letters to eight others at a function. Defending the reappointments, Dr Mahalle claimed, "They often participate in civic body events," though NMC failed to provide any Swachh Bharat awareness programme which they either attended or organised awareness drives in their localities. The current list includes a mix of digital influencers with thousands of followers, a sportsperson with marathon credentials, a transgender representative, and individuals from entertainment and wellness backgrounds. But residents question the effectiveness of giving out ceremonial titles without any performance audit. "There's zero accountability. This is a publicity stunt that insults the work of hundreds of citizens who sweat it out for cleanliness without any recognition," said a civic group member from Dharampeth. With the city fairing poorly in Swachh Survekshan rankings since the last couple of years, critics argue that Nagpur's symbolic approach could hurt its performance in future rankings too, which increasingly rely on authentic citizen participation. Without a structured evaluation framework or criteria for impact, the brand ambassador initiative risks becoming irrelevant. "If NMC is serious about cleanliness, it must stop chasing popularity and start rewarding dedication," said a vigilant citizen. "Otherwise, these invisible ambassadors will only tarnish the very mission they're supposed to lead."

15 injured as CPM, BJP cadres clash in Dindigul

Dindigul: A street-corner meeting organised by the CPM in Thadikombu village in Dindigul district turned violent on Friday following a clash with members of the BJP and Hindu Munnani. Around 15 people were injured in the altercation. Police detained cadres from both parties. The incident unfolded during the meeting organised as part of a statewide public campaign by the CPM to highlight people's demands and criticise govt policies. During the meeting, Dindigul union secretary R Sarath Kumar allegedly criticised the BJP-led central govt and the recent Murugan devotees' conference, naming a Hindu Munnani member in the process. This triggered objections from BJP and Hindu Munnani members who were nearby. The verbal confrontation escalated into a physical scuffle. Kumar and Hindu Munnani functionary Vinoth sustained injuries and were taken to Dindigul Government Medical College Hospital for treatment. As supporters from both parties gathered outside the hospital in Dindigul, tensions rose again with slogan shouting and attempts at a road blockade by CPM cadres. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mensualités: Bonne nouvelle pour les propriétaires étouffés par les crédits Bons plans propriétaires En savoir plus Undo During the second round of clashes near the hospital on Friday evening, BJP's Dindigul east district vice-president Bala Murugan suffered a head injury and was hospitalised. Police dispersed the crowd and detained Kumar and other CPM members, along with two BJP and Hindu Munnani supporters. Security was tightened in Dindigul due to the incident. In a statement issued late Friday, CPM state secretary P Shanmugam condemned the attack, alleging that BJP and Hindu Munnani members carried out a "murderous assault" on their cadres. "While Sarath Kumar, Shanmugavel, and Bakkiyam were peacefully campaigning, BJP and Hindu Munnani members attempted to silence dissent through violence. Even at the hospital, disabled comrade Jayanthi and others, including Ponmathi, Perumal, and Vishnuvardhan, were brutally attacked," he said. Shanmugam demanded that the Tamil Nadu govt take immediate action against the perpetrators and urged the police to register cases and ensure accountability. "This is not just an attack on our party but on democratic expression itself," he added.
