Madras High Court's 133-year-old heritage building gets a new lease of life

The Madras High Court is all set to complete 163 years since its establishment on June 26, 1862 and the heritage building in which it is housed in at present will be completing 133 years since its inauguration on July 12, 1892. What better time could there be to give a new lease of life to the timeless edifice still serving as a functional building visited by thousands of litigants and lawyers on a daily basis. The High Court's building committee comprising Justices R. Subramanian, R. Suresh Kumar, P.T. Asha and N. Mala have spent considerable amount of time and energy in turning the building's ground floor, that had been neglected for decades, into a pleasant haven that brings back nostalgic memories of the past. Now, the entire two-storey building looks magnificent. According to Public Works Department (PWD) Executive Engineer S. Kulanthaiyan, the biggest challenge in undertaking the renovation work was to shift the old case records that had been stored inside the rooms on the ground floor by stacking them on very tall iron racks. 'We had to spend considerable time on shifting those case bundles and then dismantling the racks using gas welding in order to free up the rooms,' he said. After completing the exercise, repairs were carried out on the damaged walls and ceiling joints, the stone arches were restored, both interior and exterior walls were white washed, doors varnished, all gates leading to the court buildings from multiple sides were opened up, the corridors were spruced up, vintage lighting arrangements were made and the walls were decorated with acclaimed illustrator Manohar Devadoss' pencil sketches of iconic locations in Chennai city. Not just this, the committee also insisted on opening up the spiral staircases that connect the ground floor with the top floors. These spiral staircases had remained under lock and key for several years and used as a place to dump the discarded furniture and other articles. They were also kept shut due to security concerns ever since the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) began guarding the court building. However, the committee insisted on opening up the spiral staircases too and made the CISF deploy additional personnel at those entry points. Even on the exterior front, multiple standalone overhead water tanks that had been blocking the view of the heritage building were razed down and alternative arrangements were made for water supply without disturbing the classic Indo Sarcenic structure. Advocate M.R. Jothimanian said, the lawyers would always be indebted to the committee for having taken the pains to restore the glory of the heritage building. 'For us, the lawyers, this High Court building is virtually our second home because we spend most of our time over here and we know that it is not an easy job to keep such a beautiful edifice functional without turning it into a museum.'

Around 8-hour delay of Goa-Pune SpiceJet flight hassles flyers

1 2 Pune: Around eight-hour delay of a SpiceJet flight from the Manohar International Airport in Goa to Pune on Thursday evening and lack of proper information from the airline's ground staffers left about 50 passengers booked on it hassled. Ishan Singh, travelling to Pune with his family, including his one-and-a-half-year-old child, said the flight (SG-1080) was slated to take off at 5.20pm and land in Pune at 6.25pm. The plane took off at 1.22am on Friday and reached Pune at 2.08am. A spokesperson of SpiceJet said, "The flight SG 1080, scheduled to operate from Goa to Pune, was delayed because of a technical issue encountered during its previous rotation. As a result, the subsequent Pune-Jaipur leg was also impacted. Passengers of both flights were informed well in advance about the revised departure times — six hours prior for the Goa-Pune sector and eight hours prior for the Pune-Jaipur sector — enabling them to plan their journey to the airport accordingly. Passengers were assisted throughout and served refreshments. SpiceJet regrets the inconvenience caused." Singh from Wakad had a different story to share. He requested the ground staff in Goa to provide them with some kind of accommodation at the airport because he was travelling with an infant. "The ground staff only told me that we could go and ask for lounge access," he said. "We had checked out of the hotel around 11.30am and reached the airport by 12noon. After arriving at the airport, we learned that the flight was rescheduled to 8.45pm. The airline might have sent messages to flyers, but I didn't receive any," Singh said. After a while, he learned that the flight was further delayed to 10.10pm. The ground staff said there were some technical problems with the aircraft and engineers had not given it a go-ahead. "Then we got another text message stating that the flight would take off at 11.10pm," Singh said. Many flyers travelling to Pune and Jaipur lost patience. "They questioned the ground staff on the issue and why they were not being served any refreshments or provided with accommodation. The answers from the ground staff were vague. Approximately 30% of the flyers cancelled their tickets and opted for a full refund. Then another message came that the flight would fly at 12.10am, triggering altercations between flyers and the ground staff. The CISF had to intervene. The plane finally took off from Goa at 1.22am," Singh said. The same aircraft was to fly from Pune to Jaipur at 7.30pm on Thursday. It flew out of the city at 3am on Friday and landed in Jaipur at 4.54am instead of 9.50pm on Thursday.

Bengaluru doctor threatens to ‘crash plane' after refusing to stow bag, offloaded from Air India Express flight

A passenger — a 36-year-old female doctor and resident of Shivanahalli, near Yelahanka in Bengaluru — was offloaded by police due to her alleged misbehaviour with cabin crew members and for reportedly threatening to crash Air India Express flight earlier this week. The incident took place on flight IX2749, which was scheduled to take off from Surat International Airport to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) around 2:30 pm on Tuesday. The confrontation began when the female passenger, Vyas Hiral Mohanbhai, left her baggage midway in the aisle while grabbing her seat at 20F. When the crew requested her to remove the bag and place it in the overhead compartment near her seat, she refused and instead demanded that the crew members move it for her, NDTV reported, citing sources. Despite multiple warnings from the crew and even an intervention by the pilot, Mohanbhai allegedly refused to cooperate and began behaving aggressively. She reportedly also yelled at fellow passengers who attempted to calm her down. The situation escalated when she allegedly threatened to "crash the flight." Following this, the pilot and cabin crew alerted security and CISF personnel, who promptly escorted her off the aircraft. The woman has been booked under sections 351 (4) (criminal intimidation by anonymous communication) and 353 (1)(b) (statements of public mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita as well as section 3(1)(a) (act of violence against a person on board an aircraft in flight which is likely to endanger the safety of such aircraft) of the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against Safety of Civil Aviation Act, the Indian Express reported. In a separate incident on Tuesday, 22-year-old Sadaad Mohammad Baba from Srinagar allegedly tried to force his way through departure gate 8 at Terminal 1 of Bengaluru airport. When CISF personnel intervened to stop the unauthorized entry, Baba reportedly pushed one of the security staff members.

Doctor threatens to crash Air India Express flight, deboarded in Bengaluru

A 36-year-old doctor was arrested on Tuesday after allegedly threatening to crash an Air India Express flight from Bengaluru to Surat, leading to a two-hour delay and a security scare. The incident involved a heated dispute over cabin baggage placement, according to a report by The Times of India. The passenger was identified as Vyas Hiral Mohanbhai, a resident of Shivanahalli near Yelahanka, who was travelling alone with two bags. Passenger refuses to comply with crew, issues mid-air threat According to police, the Ayurvedic doctor bypassed the check-in counter and insisted on carrying both bags into the cabin. Once on board, she left one bag near the crew cabin and took the other to her seat (20F), violating airline baggage protocol. When the cabin crew asked her to store the bag in the overhead bin above her seat, she refused and demanded that the crew take responsibility for it. Despite repeated instructions from both the crew and the captain, she refused to comply and became verbally abusive. Fellow passengers attempted to calm her down, but she reportedly shouted at them as well. At one point, she allegedly threatened to crash the aircraft if the crew moved her bag. CISF intervenes as captain raises security alert The captain subsequently alerted security, and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel were called to the aircraft. They boarded the plane and escorted Mohanbhai off the flight. The disturbance lasted from approximately 2.45 pm to 5.30 pm on June 17, as per a complaint filed by Agnimitra Bahinipati, associate manager of security at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). Doctor remains disruptive at police station Police said the woman's disruptive behaviour continued at the KIA police station, where she allegedly abused and manhandled officers. 'This was the first time we heard such abusive language in the station,' a senior officer said. Her husband, who works at an educational institution in Bengaluru and is originally from Odisha, told police that she had stopped practising medicine and was on her way to Gujarat to visit family. He also confirmed that she had caused disturbances in public places previously. Authorities are now verifying her background.
