Murfreesboro police investigate fatal crash with motorcyclist at N. Rutherford Blvd., Greenland
Murfreesboro police continue to investigate a fatal motorcycle crash Thursday night, according to a press release.
Officers responded at approximately 10:30 p.m. to the collision involving a motorcycle and a 2016 Ford Fusion at North Rutherford Boulevard and Greenland Avenue, the press release from Murfreesboro police spokesman Larry Flowers said.
"The motorcyclist was pronounced dead by personnel with Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services," the press release said. "The driver of the car was not hurt."

The preliminary investigation indicates the driver of a 2016 Ford Fusion was traveling southbound on North Rutherford Boulevard in the left turn lane, according to the press release.
"That driver attempted to make a left turn on a solid green light, failing to yield the right of way, colliding with the bike," the press release said. "The rider of a 2024 Kawasaki EX5 was traveling northbound on North Rutherford Boulevard."
The motorcyclist's identity will be released once out-of-town relatives are notified, the press release noted.

UPDATE: Driver charged in Murfreesboro crash that killed a 5 year old and adult
The police department's Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT) investigators are trying to determine the cause of the crash, according to the press release.
Considering this fatal crash and other motorcycle crashes in the city, the Murfreesboro police Traffic Unit and members of the Rutherford County Traffic Safety Task Force will hold a Motorcycle Safety training event from 10 a.m. to noon May 17 at Bumpus Harley-Davidson of Murfreesboro on Northwest Broad Street, the press release added.

UN fact-finding mission says Sudan conflict escalating, aid weaponised
The UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan has warned that both sides in the country's civil war have escalated the use of heavy weaponry in populated areas while weaponising humanitarian relief, amid devastating consequences for civilians. 'Let us be clear: the conflict in Sudan is far from over,' said Mohamed Chande Othman, chair of the Fact-Finding Mission, which presented its latest findings to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Tuesday. 'The scale of human suffering continues to deepen. The fragmentation of governance, the militarisation of society, and the involvement of foreign actors are fuelling an ever-deadlier crisis.' The brutal conflict, now in its third year, erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and has killed tens of thousands of civilians and displaced more than 13 million Sudanese, according to United Nations data. The UN has previously said that Sudan is experiencing the world's 'worst humanitarian crisis'. The mission found that both sides escalated the use of heavy weaponry in populated areas. In May, an RSF drone strike on Obeid International Hospital in North Kordofan killed six civilians, while earlier this month, an SAF bombing in Al Koma killed at least 15 civilians. Aid was also being weaponised by the SAF, which imposed bureaucratic restrictions, as well as by the RSF, which looted convoys and blocked aid, the group said. The mission also documented a sharp rise in sexual and gender-based violence, including gang rape, abduction, sexual slavery, and forced marriage, mostly in RSF-controlled displacement camps. Member of the Fact-Finding Mission Mona Rishmawi said what began as a political and security crisis has become 'a grave human rights and protection emergency, marked by international crimes that stain all involved'. 'It is unconscionable that this devastating war is entering its third year with no sign of resolution,' she said. Sudan has seen growing instability since longtime President Omar al-Bashir was removed from power in 2019 after months of anti-government protests. In October 2021, the Sudanese military staged a coup against the civilian government of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, leading to his resignation in early 2022. Sudan's army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and rival Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, who leads the RSF, had shared power after the coup but then started fighting for control of the state and its resources in April 2023. Last week, the Sudanese Army accused the forces of eastern Libyan military commander Khalifa Haftar of attacking Sudanese border posts, the first time it has charged its northwestern neighbour with direct involvement in the civil war. Egypt, which has also backed Haftar, has long supported the Sudanese Army. Sudan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused the United Arab Emirates of backing the RSF, which it denies.

New details released on mysterious fatal shooting of 13-year-old Pasadena boy
More than three years ago, 13-year-old Iran Moreno was playing video games in the bedroom of his Pasadena home when a bullet careened through the window and killed him. On Monday, police revealed new details in the unsolved murder case that they hope can help bring justice for the boy's tragic slaying. On Nov. 20, 2021, the driver of a gray Ford Fusion stopped in the parking lot across from Moreno's home on North Raymond Avenue, according to authorities. The passenger of the vehicle got out and fired two gunshots east, one of which hit Moreno. At the time, police said they didn't believe Moreno or his family were the targets of the gunfire. The fatal shooting came amid a rash of shootings at the time that drew more than 100 community members, city leaders and police to hold a vigil for the victims of gun violence. Newly enhanced surveillance video of the shooting revealed that part of the license plate number of the Ford Fusion was QJ117, according to a Pasadena Police Department post. The video also showed the shooter, who appeared to be a Black male between 33 and 37 years old, between 6'0' and 6'1' and 185 to 195 pounds, police said. He was wearing a red and black North Face hooded sweatshirt. Man shot by Dayton police during stolen vehicle investigation charged
Jun. 17—A man who was shot by a Dayton police officer after he reportedly attempted to block police from finding a stolen vehicle is facing charges. Rodney Smith Jr., 25, of Dayton was charged with two counts of having weapons while under disability in Montgomery County Municipal Court Western Division. The officer shot Smith on Thursday on Miller Avenue in Trotwood, just outside of Dayton, after he fled a truck with a Glock 19x in his hand. Dayton police were part of a joint violence deterrence initiative with Ohio State Highway Patrol's aviation unit Thursday and were looking for a stolen Ford Fusion when the shooting occurred. Just before the shooting, police learned the stolen car was near Olive Road and West Third Street. Police attempted a traffic stop, but the car fled, according to court records. OSHP's aviation unit tracked the Ford and gave Dayton police live updates on its location. While on Miller Avenue, the Ford rolled next to a pickup truck with a trailer attached. OSHP noted something may have been exchanged or thrown out of the Ford near the truck, according to court documents. "DPD officers encountered the truck as it appeared to back up in the road and caused the trailer to block the road," an affidavit read. Dayton police body camera footage released during a press conference Friday showed an officer exiting the cruiser with their gun drawn and tell Smith to exit the truck and show his hands multiple times. Court records said Smith tried to put the truck into gear, but it wasn't operating correctly. Smith got out of the truck and started running away from police. The officer is heard yelling that Smith has a gun as they briefly ran after Smith. The officer told him to drop the gun at least once before they shot him. Only one shot was fired, according to Dayton police Chief Kamran Afzal. "It appears, and again this is part of the criminal investigation, that he was shot right around the time as he's running with his handgun and looking back at the officer," Afzal said Friday. Officers began providing medical care and called medics to the scene. Smith was transported to the hospital and was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on Friday. The Glock was recovered and had 11 rounds with one in the chamber, according to police. Officers found the Ford in the middle of the road on Elkins Drive near Nathaniel Street. The driver, 29-year-old Heaven R. Shepherd, of Dayton, fled to a house in the 100 block of Pomeroy Avenue. A resident notified police Shepherd entered the house and shut the door, according to court records. The Ford's keys were found in a backyard Shepherd reportedly ran through. Police surrounded the house and ordered Shepherd come outside. She eventually came out and notified officers she consumed a large amount of narcotics and was overdosing, according to court records. She was taken to the hospital for treatment before being booked in the Montgomery County Jail. Shepherd is facing one count each of receiving stolen property, failure to comply and possession of a fentanyl-related compound. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is handling the criminal investigation. Once it's completed, the Dayton Police Department Professional Standards Bureau will conduct an administrative investigation.
