TAWAU: Police arrested a 31-year-old man here in connection with an extortion case involving threats to leak private images of a school canteen worker in Selangor two years ago. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the suspect, who resides in Taman Sri Balung, was identified as a person of interest in the investigation lodged in Gombak in 2023.
Advertisement 'The suspect allegedly blackmailed the 29-year-old male victim on 7 Nov 7, 2023, using the Telegram messaging app to send the victim's intimate images along with threats,' he said, Monday. The victim claimed the suspect demanded RM500 to keep the images from being released. After complying, he was asked again for another RM500, which he also paid. However, the suspect later escalated the demand to RM2,000. When the victim refused, the suspect allegedly threatened to distribute the images publicly. Fearing further threats, the victim lodged a police report at the Gombak station. The suspect was finally apprehended by a police team last Saturday and is being investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion. Hussein said Acryl Sani had lodged a police report denying that the video contained any official statement from him. He also advised the public not to share the video and urged them to verify the authenticity of any content before believing or disseminating it on social media. 'Selangor police take seriously the misuse of technology, such as AI, for the purpose of fraud or slander that could damage the reputation of any party. Firm action will be taken against those involved in spreading this fake content,' he said. Police hunt parang-wielding duo in viral robbery attempt in Hulu Selangor

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are tracking down two parang-wielding men involved in an attempted robbery at a shop in Hulu Selangor. The suspects, who were caught on video dressed in black, wearing caps and face masks, were seen attempting to attack a local man at the back of the premises. Acting Hulu Selangor district police chief Deputy Superintendent Mohd Asri Mohd Yunus said the victim lodged a police report on Wednesday at 6.42am. "Investigations revealed that the incident took place at a premises in Ulu Yam Baru. "While the victim was inside the shop, two people entered through the back door and attempted to attack the victim with parang. "It is believed that the suspects are local men," he said in a statement. During the incident, the victim screamed for help, causing the suspects to panic and flee the scene, he said. He said they did not manage to steal any of the victim's belongings. The case is being investigated under section 393 of the Penal Code. The offence carries a maximum penalty of seven years' jail and a fine.
