Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah dismisses election rift rumours

Published on: Tuesday, June 17, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 17, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: Nizam expressed confidence that such a scenario is unlikely, given the strong commitment and cooperation among the component parties within GRS and its ally, Pakatan Harapan (PH). TAWAU: Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Information Chief Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan has dismissed speculation that component parties within the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition will inevitably clash during the upcoming 17th State Election (PRN). Nizam, who is also Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, expressed confidence that such a scenario is unlikely, given the strong commitment and cooperation among the component parties within GRS and its ally, Pakatan Harapan (PH). Advertisement 'We've seen the state government under the GRS-PH administration deliver many positive results in terms of Sabah's progress and development, including protecting the welfare of the people,' he said during a visit to Kampung Kinabutan Bukit here on Sunday. 'I believe there will be no clashes among GRS component parties and no conflict with PH either,' he added. When asked about the potential of a clash between GRS and Barisan Nasional (BN), particularly Umno, in the upcoming election, Nizam said it would be up to BN to decide. The Apas assemblyman stressed that GRS's main focus is on strengthening the current unity government, which centres on cooperation, understanding, and mutual trust between GRS and PH. He revealed that this intention has already been informally communicated to the PH leadership in Sabah and to the Prime Minister, while also affirming that PGRS does not deny other parties the right to explore collaboration. 'Today's state government is formed through cooperation between GRS and PH, so naturally, our priority is to ensure the next government remains within that framework,' he said. Commenting further, Nizam said any party seeking to collaborate must understand that the priority for forming partnerships will lie with GRS and PH. As PGRS Zone 12 Coordinator (covering Tawau and Kalabakan divisions), Nizam also confirmed that the party has submitted the names of its potential candidates for the state election. 'We've requested all seven seats—Apas, Balung and Sri Tanjung under Tawau; and Merotai, Sebatik, Tanjung Batu, and Kukusan under Kalabakan. 'Ultimately, the decision lies with the PGRS leadership, but certainly, we aim to defend the three seats we currently hold—Apas, Balung, and Sebatik,' he said. On May 11, Prime Minister and PH Chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when met in Tawau, expressed optimism that a collaboration between PH, BN, and GRS could be established to face the 17th state election. However, he clarified that he could only speak on behalf of PH and would leave further discussions on the tripartite collaboration to BN and GRS. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Published on: Tuesday, June 17, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 17, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: ACP Jasmin said the suspect, who resides in Taman Sri Balung, was identified as a person of interest in the investigation lodged in Gombak in 2023. TAWAU: Police arrested a 31-year-old man here in connection with an extortion case involving threats to leak private images of a school canteen worker in Selangor two years ago. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the suspect, who resides in Taman Sri Balung, was identified as a person of interest in the investigation lodged in Gombak in 2023. Advertisement 'The suspect allegedly blackmailed the 29-year-old male victim on 7 Nov 7, 2023, using the Telegram messaging app to send the victim's intimate images along with threats,' he said, Monday. The victim claimed the suspect demanded RM500 to keep the images from being released. After complying, he was asked again for another RM500, which he also paid. However, the suspect later escalated the demand to RM2,000. When the victim refused, the suspect allegedly threatened to distribute the images publicly. Fearing further threats, the victim lodged a police report at the Gombak station. The suspect was finally apprehended by a police team last Saturday and is being investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion. Background checks revealed the suspect had previously been fined under Section 22A of the Sabah Local Government Ordinance for a separate case reported in Ranau. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Tawau gold mine incident warrants in-depth probe: Sarifuddin

Published on: Wednesday, June 11, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 11, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: Sarifuddin noted irregularities in authorities issuing stern warnings when the affected facility was maintained by the company. TAWAU: The collapse of a tailings dam at a gold mining operation in Bukit Mantri has raised serious environmental concerns over potential cyanide contamination of the Kalumpang River and surrounding areas, with Merotai Assemblyman Sarifuddin Hata calling for comprehensive investigations into the incident. Sarifuddin described the breach of the containment facility, which stored toxic cyanide waste, as having irregularities that could have been prevented with proper mitigation plans and standard operating procedures. Advertisement The incident has also exposed a dispute between two gold mining concession companies operating in Bukit Mantri. 'We believe the leakage and collapse of the dam storing toxic cyanide waste occurred due to weaknesses in the facility's maintenance system,' Sarifuddin said, Tuesday. He dismissed the company's claims of environmental compliance as deception and fact-twisting. Sarifuddin noted irregularities in authorities issuing stern warnings when the affected facility was maintained by the company. He said a concession company had officially notified the Department of Environment in 2023 that they were no longer the operator in the area and had cancelled their Environmental Impact Assessment approval. While the company has reportedly obtained a court injunction to repair the damaged dam and existing drainage, Sarifuddin expressed concerns that the company might abuse this injunction by encroaching on the concession company's land to build new drainage channels that could discharge acidic water into nearby rivers. 'We hope the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission can conduct an investigation as the world is watching how we handle this devastating environmental disaster,' he said. Numerous government agencies have responded to the incident, including the Department of Environment, Department of Minerals and Geoscience Malaysia, State Health Department, Fire and Rescue Department and State Forestry Department, coordinated through the District Disaster Action Meeting led by Tawau Municipal Council. Field inspections revealed that the company-owned dam collapsed due to leakage, causing contained water to overflow and flood worker housing and fruit orchards, with fears of contamination reaching the Kalumpang River. Sarifuddin characterised the incident as a serious environmental disaster requiring urgent action to protect the environment, wildlife and public health from potential pollution impacts. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Tawau gold mine fiasco probe: Fears over cyanide contamination of river

Published on: Tuesday, June 10, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 10, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: Nizam praised the swift response by authorities, calling their enforcement actions appropriate and necessary to protect public health and the environment. TAWAU: Numerous government agencies have mobilised to investigate potential toxic cyanide contamination after a gold mine's water retention dam burst on May 17, with concerns the spillage may have reached Sungai Kalumpang. Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan praised the swift response by authorities, calling their enforcement actions appropriate and necessary to protect public health and the environment. Advertisement The Department of Minerals and Geoscience Malaysia has imposed an immediate operational ban on the affected retention pond area, effective May 27. Meanwhile, the Department of Environmental Protection is conducting comprehensive sampling and analysis around the incident site extending to Sungai Kalumpang to assess contamination risks. 'We fully support all measures taken to ensure mining activities in the State comply with environmental regulations,' Nizam said, adding that any operations potentially damaging the environment must face strict enforcement. The coordinated response involves several key agencies to address the crisis. The Department of Environmental Protection is conducting environmental risk assessments and contamination monitoring throughout the affected area. The State Health Department has implemented health monitoring protocols for residents living near the incident site as a precautionary measure. Tawau Municipal Council is leading the disaster response coordination efforts, while the Fire and Rescue Department provides emergency response support. The State Forestry Department is also involved in assessing the broader environmental impact of the incident. A District Disaster Action Meeting, chaired by the MPT President, has been convened to address the incident and coordinate necessary response measures. The mining company involved obtained a High Court injunction on May 29 to prevent interference with critical repair work at their facility. The company's subsidiary has been granted full access to conduct necessary repairs to the damaged retention pond. The company has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental compliance and operational integrity, saying it will utilise all legal channels to protect its mining operations while addressing the incident. The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the full extent of any environmental impact and ensure public safety in the affected area. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
