FM Reaffirms Strong Support for Comoros

Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration, Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's steadfast commitment to supporting the Comorian brothers during a phone call today, Sunday, with Mohamed El-Amine Souef, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Union of the Comoros.
Abdelatty emphasized the deep historical ties between the two brotherly nations and expressed Egypt's readiness to offer technical expertise and training across various sectors, in line with Egypt's focus on supporting development efforts in sisterly African countries.
He also stressed the importance of exploring ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in fields such as education, health, and capacity building.
Moreover, FM underlined the need to continue joint efforts to activate existing cooperation mechanisms and to broaden cooperation into new areas that serve mutual interests.
The call also addressed a number of regional issues of shared concern, notably developments in the Horn of Africa, the situation in the Red Sea, as well as coordination within the African Union and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to serve common interests across various files.
For his part, the Comorian FM expressed his country's appreciation for Egypt's pivotal role in supporting African causes, affirming Comoros' aspiration to strengthen bilateral relations with Egypt at all levels and to benefit from Egyptian expertise in supporting national development programs.

According to the Ministry of Finance, total tax collections from July to May reached EGP 1.234 trillion, up from EGP 892 billion a year earlier. Officials attributed the increase to improvements in tax administration, greater compliance, and ongoing economic recovery supported by currency stabilisation and structural reforms. The gains were spread across key segments, with income tax revenues rising by 21% to EGP 259.6 billion and value-added tax (VAT) climbing 39% to EGP 573 billion. Property tax receipts surged nearly 59% year-on-year, while trade taxes grew 74% to reach EGP 79.2 billion. The government also pointed to the benefits of digitalisation, automation, and a broader tax base as driving forces behind the growth. The performance aligns with broader fiscal targets aimed at reducing the budget deficit and increasing reliance on sustainable domestic revenue.

In 2023, Visa became one of the first major payments networks to settle transactions in stablecoin when it piloted enabling clients to fulfill their settlement obligations in USDC. To date, over $225 million in stablecoin volume has been settled through Visa across participating clients. Enhancing Cross-Border Money Movement Visa is partnering with Yellow Card, a leading pan-African fintech, to explore stablecoin use cases and opportunities across markets where Yellow Card is licensed to operate to help streamline treasury operations and enhance liquidity management. Panama Shuts Down Internet, Mobile Services amid Violent Protests in Bocas del Toro

Taarek Refaat Panama's president José Raúl Molinar declared a state of emergency on Friday, suspending the rights to assemble and move freely in the province of Bocas del Toro, after demonstrators set up roadblocks, damaged the local airport, and caused significant disruptions to businesses and offices. In a statement released on X, the National Public Services Authority confirmed that, under the emergency decree, "temporary suspension of mobile phone and home internet services will be implemented in the province of Bocas del Toro until June 25." The authority clarified that internet access will still be available for healthcare institutions, businesses, and government agencies. The unrest in Bocas del Toro, a key banana-producing region, erupted nearly two months ago in opposition to government pension reforms. The protests escalated into violence on Thursday in the town of Changuinola, where masked groups looted several stores and set part of a baseball field on fire while police officers were inside. According to authorities, the violence resulted in one fatality, more than 100 arrests, and dozens of injuries, including 13 police officers. The protests initially began in late April with workers from the American banana giant, Chiquita, striking against pension reforms they argued would force them to work longer before retiring. In response, Chiquita terminated thousands of workers, which led to further unrest. Although banana farmer unions called off their protest last week in an attempt to prevent more layoffs, other groups and unions have continued their blockades and sit-ins. President Molinar is facing growing discontent on multiple fronts. In addition to the pension reform protests, Panamanians have also taken to the streets in opposition to a controversial agreement signed between the Panamanian government and U.S. President Donald Trump in April, which allows U.S. forces to deploy at U.S. military bases along the Panama Canal.
