Kolkata: RVNL has started preparing the detailed project report for the three-way underpass at Chingrighata after it got a nod from the KMC.
Police had told RVNL traffic blocks at Chingrighata for two weekend nights to bridge the last 366m of the viaduct gap of the Orange Line's Ruby-Sector V section would be granted only after the underpass was built.
The implementing agency of the 29km New Garia-Airport Metro corridor is trying to reason that the underpass would take time to be built and involve complex traffic curbs at the crossing.
The traffic department noted the ground reality in a compiled 'minutes' of an inspection by police and RVNL engineers: "The construction of the underpass may start in Oct-Nov... Completion is estimated to take six months..."
RVNL has been seeking six nights' traffic block at Chingrighata to launch two spans over the crossing to bridge the viaduct gap.
Once this 366m work is done, the Orange Line can be extended from Ruby to Sector V. But with the traffic department refusing to hand over the site, girder-launching at Chingrighata has been stalled since Feb 2. Several meetings and inspections later, police told RVNL the underpass was their biggest priority for pedestrian safety at Chingrighata.
TOI reported on Feb 15 that the extension of Orange Line till Sector V would be stalled till the work on the Chingrighata underpass got underway. Metro is pleading with the traffic department to reconsider its stand. "The underpass will take around a year. Launching spans over Chingrighata can be done in six nights, over two weekends," a railway official said.

Boy missing after crossing overflowing stream found dead in Kolhapur

Kolhapur: The body of an 11-year-old boy, Aman Jalaluddin Bhaldar, was recovered Friday noon from an overflowing stream at Sarnobatwadi village in Kolhapur. Aman, a Class 6 student, had been missing since Thursday evening after attempting to cross the swollen stream on his bicycle to attend tuition classes. According to district disaster management head Prasad Sankpal, Aman lost control while cycling over the bridge, which was submerged by the overflowing water, and was swept away. "A search operation began on Thursday night, but was suspended due to heavy rain and darkness. Kolhapur Disaster Rescue Force (KDRF) resumed the search on Friday morning, locating the boy's body in nearby bushes. We urge the people to avoid entering flowing waters during heavy rainfall," Sankpal said. Meanwhile, Kolhapur city received extremely heavy rainfall late on Thursday, resulting in several streets being converted into streams. This also exposed the false claims of pre-monsoon works carried out by the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC). Sachin Jadhav, a local resident, said, "The KMC claimed to gave completed 90 per cent of the nullahs and drainage cleaning works. If this was true, then why did 12 roads in Kolhapur city get closed due to the waterlogging?" The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an orange alert for the region, comprising Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, and Solapur districts for Friday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Although the weather remained partly cloudy throughout the day, no heavy spell of rain was received anywhere in Kolhapur district. BCC Issues final notice to Vega Funmobile over Rs 7.3 crore property tax dues

Belagavi: The Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) issued a final notice to Vega Funmobile Private Limited, demanding the payment of Rs 7,33,66,476 in overdue property tax, pending from 2004–05 to 2025–26. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The notice follows allegations of tax evasion and serious violations of building construction norms by the company. According to the breakdown provided in the notice, the total due includes: Property tax Rs 1,99,49,156, cesses Rs 50,76,836, penalty Rs 4,82,33,084, and solid waste management tax of Rs 1,07,400. The notice, issued under the Karnataka Municipal Corporations (KMC) Act, 1976, mandates the company to pay the dues within seven days of receipt. Failure to do so will lead to strict recovery action, including distraint and sale of movable assets, and attachment of immovable properties. Speaking to the TOI, BCC commissioner Shubha B said: "This is the final warning issued to the company. If the dues are not cleared, legal proceedings will be initiated." She clarified that the outstanding amount was calculated after adjusting previously paid amounts. Significantly, the 24,000 sq ft commercial structure operated by Vega Funmobile is entirely unauthorised, built without a valid building permit. Despite this, the company was paying property tax under the commercial category through the Self-Assessment Scheme (SAS) since 2004, without proper verification. BCC sources revealed that a detailed inquiry led to the penalty after detecting mismatches between the declared and actual built-up area. The company is said to have admitted to the violations during the proceedings. As a result, action was taken under Section 112(C) of the KMC Act, 1976. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Commissioner Shubha conducted a comprehensive investigation, including spot inspections, review of electricity records, construction timelines, and satellite imagery analysis. Following this, she conducted three hearings on Jan 31, April 15, and April 21, 2025. The office issued a final order on April 25, and the final notice was served on Tuesday.

Meghalaya honeymoon horror: How mangalsutra, ring left at homestay helped cops crack Raja Raghuvanshi murder case

Police cracked the murder case of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, killed during his honeymoon in Meghalaya. A mangalsutra and ring left behind by his wife, Sonam, raised suspicion. NEW DELHI: A mangalsutra and a ring left behind in a suitcase proved to be the first vital clue that helped police crack the sensational murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, who was killed during his honeymoon in Meghalaya last month, Meghalaya DGP I Nongrang said on Wednesday. Raja (29) and his wife Sonam (25) had arrived in Meghalaya via Guwahati on May 20, just days after their May 11 wedding in Indore. On May 23, the couple vanished from Sohra (Cherrapunji) in East Khasi Hills after checking out of a homestay in Nongriat village. 'We recovered Sonam's mangalsutra and a ring from the suitcase they left behind at a homestay in Sohra. A married woman leaving behind such symbols of marriage raised our suspicion and gave us a reason to pursue her as a suspect,' DGP Nongrang told PTI. Raja's decomposed body was found in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls on June 2. Police launched a multi-state chase for Sonam, who eventually surfaced on June 9 — over 1,200km away — in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur, where she surrendered before police. Police have also arrested Sonam's alleged boyfriend Raj Kushwaha and three contract killers. All five have been remanded to eight days of police custody by a court in Shillong. According to a police officer involved in the probe, the couple had walked into the Sohra homestay on May 22 without any prior booking. Since they didn't get a room and had plans to trek over 3,000 steps to Nongriat village to see the famed double-decker root bridge, they left their suitcase at the homestay and spent the night at another homestay in Nongriat. The next morning, they trekked back to Sohra, picked up their scooter and rode to Weisawdong Falls — the site where Raja was allegedly killed by three contract killers, reportedly in front of Sonam. Earlier, PTI had reported that a local tour guide had spotted the couple with three Hindi-speaking men on the trail back to Sohra, a detail that later turned out to be crucial in identifying the accused. 'The accused have admitted to the crime. With all the evidence gathered, there is little room for denial,' a senior police officer said.
