Suspect dead, trooper injured after shooting in Saline County

SALINE County, Mo. — A suspect wanted for an out-of-state homicide is dead, and a Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) trooper is recovering after a police chase ended in a shooting east of Kansas City. MSHP said the shooting took place south of Interstate 70 near 115th Road and Belmont Avenue in Sweet Springs, Missouri. The highway patrol reports a suspect is dead and a trooper was shot in his bullet-resistant vest. The trooper was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries and has since been released. MSHP said that at around 6:20 p.m., troopers were notified that the Concordia Police Department was in a chase with the suspect. Police from the department lost sight of the motorcyclist near 120th Road south of I-70 in Saline County. Jackson County to reclassify short-term rentals in new ordinance Around 8 p.m., troopers said they spotted a motorcyclist who matched the description traveling west on 115th Road toward Belmont Avenue. Near the intersection of 115th Road and Belmont Avenue, the motorcycle crashed into a patrol car, and the suspect ran from the scene. A trooper was chasing the suspect when the suspect shot at the trooper, according to MSHP. 'That trooper ultimately returned fire, striking the suspect, and the suspect was pronounced deceased on scene,' said Cpl. Justin Ewing with MSHP Troop A. The trooper had minor injuries and was treated and released from the hospital. 'As an agency, today's a day of reflection, but a day of gratitude for us. Last night was a very scary moment. If things had gone differently, we could have been mourning the loss of one of our own troopers today,' Ewing explained. 'So we're thankful that he is at home recovering, and we're thankful that he had his vest on.' Ewing said that the suspect had no known ties to Saline County. 'The suspect was just fleeing from the original area where this homicide occurred. Through investigative techniques, it was learned that his location might be in our area, at which time local law enforcement was able to contact him, which led to the events and how they unfolded last night,' Ewing said. The suspect has been identified as 23-year-old Francis Alcantar-Chavez, from Temple, Arizona. He was wanted in connection with a double homicide that happened on June 15 in Taylor, Arizona. 'I will say this is kind of a unique case. This is not a typical case for us. The investigation that this suspect was originally tied to is complex. So with that, we don't want to compromise any sort of investigation that's going on with this outside agency. So we can't really speak too much about where the suspect was wanted from,' Ewing explained. An investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
