The new Harry Potter child stars have confirmed my worst fears

Metro28-05-2025

I used to be your typical Potterhead – during my youth, I had Harry Potter posters pinned up in my room, followed countless fan accounts online and attended the opening day screenings for all the later films.
Still now in the corner of my childhood bedroom a discarded Gryffindor scarf, Fleur Delacour's wand, and battered copies of the original book series sit collecting dust.
When I saw the news of an open casting call (where anyone can audition, regardless of experience) for leads in the new HBO series I felt worry bloom in the pit of my stomach.
And now our three newcomers have been cast with Dominic McLaughlin in the role of Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley – that concern has only increased.
And that's for two reasons – firstly, because I've left the 'Potterverse' firmly in the past after JK Rowling's offensive comments on transgender people and think the entire franchise needs to be forgotten about.
But also because I'm truly concerned about what will happen to the new Harry, Ron, and Hermione, plucked from childhood and obscurity and flung into stardom.
Not only will this trio of unknown actors star in what will surely become one of the most heavily scrutinised TV shows this decade, but all under the creative jurisdiction of someone who has, in my view, opposed the rights of a marginalised community.
We have already seen the dangers this level of fame can create, even before the author of the series descended into Twitter troll status.

During the height of Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson's stint as the golden trio, Emma almost called it quits due to the pressure and Daniel struggled with drinking heavily (and has since been almost 15 years sober).
Years later, I'm seriously impressed with all three actors.
Not only for their stability in life, considering the extraordinary pressure they were under from such a young age, but for remaining firm allies of the transgender community as it remains under attack from JK Rowling.
So I worry for the young soon-to-be stars stepping into their shoes for a rebooted series that no-one was really asking for.
If anything, the new series almost feels like watching a car crash in slow motion. Morbid but difficult to look away from.
It's already a PR nightmare with a controversial author behind the source material and constant speculation about the ultimate fate of the company behind the reboot, Warner Brother Discovery, which has seen its stock price plummet and desperately needs this show to be a success.
There are all the elements for disaster waiting to happen – and while, for me, schadenfreude is tempting given Rowling's behaviour – I'm worried that these innocent children will be the collateral damage.
There are so many reasons for fans and non-fans alike to oppose this new series.
Chiefly, of course, is mine and many former fans' moral object to lining Rowling's pocket as she continues to make comments about trans women and others that shock and disgust many people.
We need only look at her recent commentary about Olympic boxer Imane Khalif to see how far down this rabbit hole she has gone.
Not only can the Harry Potter set, in my view, never be a safe environment for trans and non-binary actors, but given the increasingly foul taste Rowling is leaving in her critics' mouths, the whole project appears to be growing more taboo by the day.
Unlike the blockbuster film franchise, which saw iconic British stars such as Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith and Julie Walters pass through its doors, for me the relaunched big-budget TV show will act as a litmus test for the morals of established actors.
How many will want to risk potentially losing the respect of their fanbase for an unnecessary remake of a fantasy series?
All this leads me to say that, clearly, Harry Potter is a cultural relic in more ways than one.
The films only left cinemas just over a decade ago, which hardly warrants enough time passed to re-imagine them.
Meanwhile, spin-off content like the Fantastic Beasts franchise has clearly lost all momentum.
That series has been plagued with its own scandal by featuring controversial actors Ezra Miller and Johnny Depp, which, coupled with a lack of popularity, the original five-film plan has seemingly been put on an indefinite hiatus. More Trending
Much like the Defence Against the Dark Arts position, the whole series is starting to seem cursed.
Instead of re-creating a series that already has a widely-beloved on screen adaptation and a controversial author, why not invest in new fantasy adaptations that are truly forward-looking?
In 2025, there are better options for us to be investing our time and money in so that we can finally leave Harry Potter where it belongs – in the past.

Sunday Brunch viewers welcome Tim Lovejoy's replacement's 'feminine energy'

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Tim Lovejoy has stepped down from hosting Sunday Brunch after 13 years and fans are already loving his replacement. The 57-year-old presenter announced he would be taking a break from the Sunday food and talk show, which he has starred on since 2012. Long-time co-host Simon Rimmer will instead be joined by a fresh-faced TV star who is already being praised for bringing some 'feminine energy'. Reality TV icon, radio presenter and beloved Geordie Shore legend, Vicky Pattison, is taking on the job. She rocked a slicked-back ponytail and a yellow button-up dress for her first day as official co-host, beaming as she stepped up to the challenge. After dancing during the intro, Vicky, 37, declared she was so excited to be hosting, she was 'buzzing like an old fridge'. 'I HAVE SOME EXCITING NEWS!!!!' wrote Vicky on Instagram when she announced the news, days before her debut. She continued: 'As a long time friend of @sundaybrunchc4 it is an absolute HONOUR to be wearing a slightly different hat this week! I will be joining my good pal @rimmersimon as his cohost while the lovely @timlovejoy_official has a very well deserved break!!! 🩷😍 'I am buzzing like an old fridge to chat to all of our gorgeous guests, eat some delicious food and hopefully give anyone watching and nursing a hangover a bit of light comedy reprieve 😂 'See you bright and early Sunday my loves… and wish me luck 💜🥹.' Along with the message, Vicky shared snaps of herself on the Channel 4 show over the years plus some backstage memories. Her news was met with overwhelming positivity from fans and famous friends, as Chloe Burrows commented applause and heart emojis. 'Omg I'm SO excited for this girl 😍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻amazing news,' said internet star Charley Marlowe as Myleene Klass sent applause emojis. 'Absolutely brilliant Vicky well done!!!! 👏❤️🙌,' wrote Celebs Go Dating expert Anna Williamson. Steph McGovern added: 'Congratulations! You're gonna have a right laugh with our Rimmer! 😍😍.' Over on X, her first appearance gained a fair amount of praise with SpiritWalkTalk saying: 'Joke about Vicki all you want, but its good to have some feminine energy co-presenting and female POV on the sofa while chatting with the guests.' TashaConnor shared: 'Haters going to hate but I am loving @VickyPattison on Sunday Brunch! Such a breath of fresh wine!' More Trending Sullivan11 said: 'It's great to see @VickyPattison hosting the show today, she's amazing, hopefully she'll be on again.' There were some who weren't so pleased, with some asking if she was 'drunk' after a glass of wine and complaining they 'can't understand' her accent. Many complaints came from those upset that Rosie Jones was also on the show, which the comedian has regularly responded to. Last year, when she was announced for Taskmaster, Rosie's not-so-subtle reply was simply to stick up her middle finger to the haters. Got a story? JK Rowling hails BBC newsreader Martine Croxall after she overrules autocue's 'pregnant people' line to say 'women'

JK Rowling has hailed BBC newsreader Martine Croxall after she overruled an autocue line which said 'pregnant people' to say 'women' instead. The Harry Potter author, 59, who has been vocal on the subject of trans people and what she calls 'sex-based rights' for several years, has praised the journalist, 56, for it on social media. The clip from a recent BBC News episode saw Ms Croxall introduce new research on the number of heat-related deaths expected amid Britain's current heatwave. But as the autocue prompted her to warn 'pregnant people' to take care in the heat, she first read the term out before overriding it, with a smirk and eyebrow raise. She said: 'Malcolm Mistry, who was involved in the research, said the aged, pregnant people - women! - and those with pre-existing health conditions need to take precautions.' Ms Rowling reposted the clip on X, captioning it: 'I have a new favourite BBC presenter.' Ms Croxall herself soon responded to a commenter who had praised her move as 'brilliant', adding: 'I hope you don't get hauled before the BBC News beak.' The broadcaster simply replied: 'Braced x.' The original clip was first reposted to X by campaign group SEEN In Journalism, which says it 'seeks to restore accuracy and impartiality to media coverage of sex and gender'. They captioned their post, 'Good to see accuracy on BBC News', followed by an emoji of a pregnant woman. Therapist and gender-critical campaigner James Esses has also weighed in online to praise Ms Croxall: 'The BBC is so utterly enthralled to gender ideology that it took a brave newsreader to correct the teleprompter instruction to say "pregnant people" by instead saying "women" afterwards. 'Let's hope she isn't cancelled for her rebellion!' Former BBC journalist Sean McGinty - whose LinkedIn says he co-founded the broadcaster's new music show BBC Introducing, in a more than 20-year career with the broadcaster before leaving in 2024 - backed the newsreader too. He said: 'She's fab, also brave and strong enough to do so from within.' Ms Croxall is one of the main presenters of BBC News, having started work for the broadcaster more than 30 years ago, in 1991, and for its news programme in 2001. Other commenters agreed with Ms Rowling's admiration for Ms Croxall too, with one saying: 'What is her name? I only want her as a BBC presenter.' Ms Croxall herself soon responded to a commenter who had praised her move as 'brilliant', adding: 'I hope you don't get hauled before the BBC News beak.' The broadcaster simply replied: 'Braced x' Therapist and gender-critical campaigner James Esses has also weighed in online to praise Ms Croxall Former BBC journalist Sean McGinty - whose LinkedIn says he co-founded the broadcaster's new music show BBC Introducing, in a more than 20-year career with the broadcaster before leaving in 2024 - backed the newsreader too Other commenters agreed with Ms Rowling's admiration for Ms Croxall too Another said of the veteran broadcaster: 'The worst thing is that your post probably just resulted in her never being on the BBC again once her bosses see it.' Ms Croxall made headlines in April for challenging a pro-transgender activist who said April's Supreme Court ruling on the definition of sex within the 2010 Equality Act might need some 'clarification'. In a live interview with the presenter just after the ruling, campaigner and ex-Labour MSP candidate Heather Herbert - who has now joined the Greens - said: 'I feel like I'm under attack.' She clashed with Ms Croxall throughout the segment, as the host questioned how it was an 'attack', adding she felt it was just a 'clarification of what the word "woman" means'. Ms Croxall said the case made clear 'sex is binary and immutable' when the activist said local authorities which have not protected single-sex spaces on the basis of biological sex may need to reconsider in light of the ruling. When Ms Herbert asked for 'clarification', the presenter replied: 'The ruling is that "woman" means biological sex.' It comes after Ms Rowling's views on sex and gender have received renewed attention in recent months, following the Supreme Court ruling in April. Judges ruled the terms 'woman' and 'sex' in the 2010 Equality Act 'refer to a biological woman and biological sex'. This means transgender women with a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) can be excluded from single-sex spaces if deemed 'proportionate'. It marked the culmination of a long-running legal battle between the Scottish government and women's group For Women Scotland. It was over the definition of a 'woman' in Scottish legislation mandating 50 percent female representation on public boards. The case centred on whether somebody with a GRC recognising their gender as female should be treated as a woman under the 2010 Equality Act. The outcome will have implications in England, Scotland and Wales. Ms Rowling reacted to the ruling on X: 'It took three extraordinary, tenacious Scottish women with an army behind them to get this case heard by the Supreme Court and, in winning, they've protected the rights of women and girls across the UK. '@ForWomenScot, I'm so proud to know you.' She later added: 'Trans people have lost zero rights today, although I don't doubt some (not all) will be furious that the Supreme Court upheld women's sex-based rights.' And after sharing another post on X, suggesting she and her husband were clinking glasses of champagne in celebration, she followed up it with a selfie from on board her $150 million superyacht puffing a cigar in celebration. The writer, who reportedly helped fund the women's group which brought the case, captioned the post: 'I love it when a plan comes together. #SupremeCourt #WomensRights.' Meanwhile, opponents have said they fear the ruling could put trans and non-binary people at renewed risk of attacks and discrimination. Judge Lord Hodge recognised 'the strength of feeling on both sides' and cautioned against seeing the judgement as 'a triumph for one side over another'. He stressed the law still gives trans people protection against discrimination. The judge said: 'The Equality Act gives transgender people protection not only against discrimination through the protected characteristics of gender reassignment, but also against direct discrimination, indirect discrimination, and harassment, in substance in their acquired gender.' He added: 'On the one hand women, who make up one half of the population, have campaigned for over 150 years to have equality with men and to combat discrimination based on their sex. That work still continues. 'On the other hand, a vulnerable and often harassed minority, the trans community, struggle against discrimination and prejudice as they seek to live their lives with dignity.' Human rights organisation Amnesty International has since also emphasised: 'The court has been clear that trans people are protected under the Equality Act against discrimination and harassment. 'The ruling does not change the protection trans people are afforded under the protected characteristic of 'gender reassignment', as well as other provisions under the Equality Act... 'The Supreme Court itself made clear that the vilification of a marginalised minority group is absolutely wrong.' 'All public authorities in the UK need to unequivocally enforce protections for trans people against discrimination and harassment.'

Dua Lipa took to the stage on Friday and Saturday for two shows, the first of the UK leg of her highly anticipated 75+ date Radical Optimism Tour, playing to 150,000 fans in the capital. In the crowd to support the 29 year old during her jaw-dropping performances were her family members, including dad Dukagjin, sister Rina and brother Gjin, as well as her actor fiancé Callum, who was seen dancing the night away. When the singer wrapped up her performance on Friday night, the Fantastic Beasts star said from the VIP area: 'She was incredible. She's just amazing.' The 23-song set opened with her hit single Training Season followed by fan favourites including Break My Heart, One Kiss and Whatcha Doing. She also treated fans to a rare performance of Hotter Than Hell, fitting for a scorching hot night in London. She introduced the song by saying : ' This is the song that got me signed, and it's the song that started everything. With weather like this, there's only one song I could do.' Throughout the night, Dua stunned in an array of dazzling outfits as she performed, including a custom black Chanel bodysuit adorned with gold chains, a faithful homage to a 1992 couture original, during her impressive encore. On Friday fans were treated to a surprise appearance from Jamiroquai to perform Virtual Insanity during a special moment for the singer. Bringing him out on stage, she remarked: 'This is someone who really inspired me when I first started out. 'Someone who I feel like is a massive trailblazer in music and has kind of paved the way.' On Saturday night the pop sensation thrilled the crowd when she introduced Charli XCX with a cheeky shoutout. She said: 'So this next song, I thought I'd bring a friend out. Let me tell you, she is the biggest brat. Give it up for Charli XCX!' It's been a whirlwind few months for the singer, including a proposal from Callum, which she confirmed took place last year. Months after teasing fans by wearing a ring on her engagement finger, she confirmed in an interview with British Vogue that she and Callum, 35, are set to tie the knot. More Trending 'Yeah, we're engaged,' last year's Glastonbury headliner cooly shared. 'It's very exciting. This decision to grow old together, to see a life and just, I don't know, be best friends forever – it's a really special feeling.' Dua revealed that Callum popped the question with a custom-made ring, which he had consulted with her sister Rina over. 'I'm obsessed with it,' she continued. 'It's so me. It's nice to know the person that you're going to spend the rest of your life with knows you very well.' The happy couple began dating in January 2024 and made their relationship Instagram official in July. Got a story?
