79 days till the Arizona Cardinals' 2025 season opener: Who has worn No. 79?

USA Today13 hours ago

With 79 days till the Cardinals open the season against the Saints, we look at the players who have worn No. 79.
We are counting down to the start of the 2025 regular season for the Arizona Cardinals and are now less than 12 weeks away. They will open the season on the road against the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 7. That is 79 days away.
As we count down the remaining days of the offseason, let's look at who has worn that number uniform over the years for the Cardinals.
Who has worn No. 79?
Cardinals players to wear No. 79
Defensive lineman P.J. Mustipher now wears No. 79. No one has worn it for more than three seasons this century.
Simeon Rice only wore 79 his rookie season before dominating at No. 97. But a player who was fantastic was Walker, who had 50.5 sacks for the Cardinals, although it was before sacks were a stat. Pro Football Reference credits him for that many sacks.

NFL top 100 rankings: Arizona Cardinals TE Trey McBride comes in at No. 42

Pete Prisco ranked the top 100 players of 2025 in the NFL. Only Trey McBride makes the list for the Cardinals. Every offseason, we see player rankings — top 100, top 101, top 50, whatever. Every year, we see where Arizona Cardinals players land. CBS Sports' Pete Prisco gave his top 100 list entering the 2025 season. Only one Cardinals player made the list — not Budda Baker, not James Conner. The only Cardinal to make the top 100 was tight end Trey McBride, coming in at No. 42, moving up from No. 83 a year ago. McBride finished fourth in the league with 111 catches in his breakout season. He had just two touchdown catches, which is a number that will go up this season ... count on it. McBride 100% should be on this list. He has entered the conversation as being the best tight end in the NFL. It is true that his two touchdown catches were simply fluky. He did rush for a touchdown and score once on a fumble recovery in the end zone. He was a frequent target in the red zone, but because of a couple of drops and a couple of missed throws by quarterback Kyler Murray, he didn't end up with six to eight touchdown grabs. Of course, while McBride is an easy choice for this list, two Cardinals players are notably snubbed — Baker and Conner. Baker continues to play at an elite level at safety and gets Pro Bowl nods year after year, a sign that coaches and players respect and value him. Conner's absence is disappointing because he produces among the best running backs, reaching nearly 1,100 yards last season and continuing to be a big-play runner as he advances in his career. Looking ahead to next offseason, hopefully McBride isn't alone. It would be good to see McBride, Baker, Conner, quarterback Kyler Murray and receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. in Prisco's rankings in 2026. NFL QB rankings: Arizona Cardinals face 7 borderline stars or better in 2025

The Cardinals will face 14 different starting quarterbacks in 2025. See where they rank. As we have reached the point of the offseason where content is mostly reduced to lists and rankings, we have some quarterback rankings/tiers from CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin. We have looked at Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray and the tiers where he and fellow NFC West quarterbacks fall, but now we want to look at the Cardinals' opponents. These are the tiers: The Cardinals face a healthy dose of the lowest tiers. Let's have a look. Tier 6 opponent QBs for Cardinals Seven quarterbacks total are in this tier. The Cardinals face four of them. Tier 5: Prized projects Ward is the one rookie quarterback with real promise. The Cardinals will face him early in the season. Tier 4: Volatile veterans Kyler Murray falls into this tier, too. Tier 2: Borderline stars The Cardinals will not face any of the four rising stars in Bo Nix, Drake Maye, J.J. McCarthy and Caleb Williams, so we move to the very good group. Tier 1: Transcendent talents Six quarterbacks make this list. The Cardinals only have to face one: Get more Cardinals and NFL coverage from Cards Wire's Jess Root and others by listening to the latest on the Rise Up, See Red podcast. Pallante throws 6 shutout innings, Cardinals have 5-run 8th in 6-1 win over Reds

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Andre Pallante allowed two hits in six shutout innings and the St. Louis Cardinals used a five-run eighth inning to beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-1 on Friday night. Pallante (5-3) allowed a walk and a second-inning single to Matt McLain before leaving with a 1-0 lead after a broken-bat single by Elly De La Cruz to begin the seventh. Phil Maton got three outs to end it. St. Louis scored five runs off relievers Scott Barlow, Taylor Rogers and Tony Santillan — who retired one batter each. Masyn Winn drove in the first run with a single off Rogers and Lars Nootbaar's single off Santillan capped the rally after a two-out throwing error by Gavin Lux led to two runs. Brendan Donovan reached on a fielder's choice, took third on a Winn double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Alec Burleson to give St. Louis a 1-0 lead in the third against Reds starter Brady Singer (7-5). Singer allowed one run on four hits and a walk in six innings, striking out seven and retiring his final nine batters. Santiago Espinal singled leading off the eighth against John King and scored on a throwing error by Jordan Walker on Jose Trevino's double to right field for the Reds' run. Thomas Saggese, was called up from Triple-A Memphis before the game, hit the grounder that Lux threw away. He replaced catcher Iván Herrera, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain. Cincinnati is 59-101 since 2006 at Busch Stadium. Key moment In the seventh, Maton got Tyler Stephenson to hit into a double play on his first pitch before striking out Spencer Steer swinging. Key stat Pallante entered with a 5-2 record and 2.18 ERA in six starts and 16 appearances against Cincinnati — tied with Harry Brecheen for the fourth-lowest ERA by a Cardinals pitcher against the Reds. Up next Reds LHP Wade Miley (1-0, 6.75) was set to start Saturday against RHP Sonny Gray (7-2, 3.84). ___ AP MLB:
