The curtains are set to come down on Angelo Mathews' illustrious Test career in less than a weeks time in Galle – a fitting stage for a grand finale.
A teenage prodigy once tipped to be the next big all-rounder, Mathews weathered many storms, reinvented his game and ultimately carved out a niche as a dependable middle-order batter.
With 8,167 Test runs to his name, he signs off as Sri Lanka's third-highest run-scorer, behind the towering twin pillars of Kumara Sangakkara (12,400) and Mahela Jayawardene (11,814).
Unlike his two illustrious predecessors who batted with a touch of poetry, Mathews' craft was forged in grit rather than grace. His wasn't a willow that sang, but one that scraped and scrapped, often when the chips were down. Few would have wagered on him joining the elite run club, but through sheer consistency and an indomitable spirit, he made it.
In an exclusive interview with Telecom Asia Sport (www.telecomasia.net), Mathews opened up about his decision to hang up his boots.
"I wasn't happy with my returns in the last seven to nine games. By my standards, it wasn't up to the mark. I looked at the calendar – only two Tests scheduled over the next 18 months. One at 38, another at 39. Felt like a long wait and I thought it's best a younger player gets a crack.
Mathews admitted he was proud, yet slightly wistful. "I never dreamt I'd finish as the third-highest run-scorer for Sri Lanka, especially behind two legends of the game. Yes, there's a tinge of disappointment not breaching that 10,000-run mark. Injuries and setbacks played their part, but I'm ever grateful to God for letting me play 118 Tests."
Though the whites are being folded away, Mathews isn't done with cricket just yet. With the T20 World Cup coming up – co-hosted by Sri Lanka in eight months – he hasn't ruled out one final hurrah in coloured clothing.

Mathews also fondly recalled two crowning moments in his career – leading Sri Lanka to their first-ever Test series win in England in 2014, and the historic 3-0 whitewash of Australia in 2016 to lift the Warne-Murali Trophy.
"That England series was something else — scoring back-to-back hundreds and winning from behind was deeply satisfying. Then to beat Australia 3-0 was special. I'll always be grateful to the players and support staff who made those memories possible."
Beyond his own milestones, Mathews takes quiet pride in having nurtured the next generation. More than half of the current national side debuted under his captaincy.
"There's no greater satisfaction than seeing those youngsters blossom into match-winners. Identifying talent is one thing, but backing them through lean patches is what really matters. Watching them now — they're vital cogs in the wheel. It gives me hope that Sri Lankan cricket is in good hands."

Bangladesh win toss, bat in first Sri Lanka Test
GALLE: Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and chose to bat in the first Test in Galle on Tuesday, the final outing for Sri Lanka stalwart Angelo Mathews. Mathews, who made his debut in 2009 on the famous pitch perched beneath the fortress in Galle, is retiring after 118 Tests. Sri Lanka Cricket made a presentation to Mathews before the start. 'I am extremely proud to have a wonderful journey, thankful for whoever was part of it,' said Mathews, who was joined by his family on the ground for the ceremony. 'Feeling quite special. Realising that I have played over 100 Tests. Playing for the country was my dream, it has come true.' Sri Lanka handed debut Test caps to top-order batsman Lahiru Udara and ambidextrous bowler Tharindu Ratnayake. Udara has been a prolific run scorer in domestic cricket while Ratnayake can bowl both right- and left-arm orthodox spin. Bangladesh suffered a blow ahead of the game when all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz was ruled out with fever. He was outstanding in Bangladesh's innings win over Zimbabwe in their last Test, taking five wickets and scoring a hundred. The match is the first in the new two-year World Test Championship cycle. The second Test begins in Colombo on June 25. BCCI announces schedule for New Zealand tour

Photo: AFP/File The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the schedule and venues for New Zealand's white-ball tour of India, set to take place in January 2026. The tour will feature three ODIs followed by five T20Is, marking the first bilateral series between the two sides since India's win over New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final earlier this year. Vadodara will mark its return to the men's international cricketing map after more than 15 years, with the city set to host the opening ODI on January 11 at the newly built Kotambi Stadium. The venue previously hosted three Women's ODIs between India and West Indies in December 2024 and six matches during the 2025 Women's Premier League (WPL). Interestingly, New Zealand also featured in Vadodara's last men's international match - an ODI at Reliance Stadium in December 2010. In that game, current India head coach Gautam Gambhir was named Player of the Match for his century, while Virat Kohli, who has since retired from T20Is and Tests but continues to play ODIs, scored an unbeaten 63. Following the series opener in Vadodara, the teams will remain in Gujarat for the second ODI in Rajkot on January 14, before the series concludes with the third ODI in Indore on January 18. The tour will then transition to the T20I leg, starting with matches in Nagpur (January 21) and Raipur (January 23). The final leg of the tour will take place in eastern and southern India, with Guwahati (January 25), Visakhapatnam (January 28), and Thiruvananthapuram (January 31) hosting the third, fourth and fifth T20Is respectively. These five T20Is are likely to be India's final preparation before they begin their campaign at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, which they are co-hosting with Sri Lanka. The Men in Blue will enter the tournament as defending champions, having won the 2024 edition in the West Indies and the USA. New Zealand, on the other hand, are scheduled to play a three-match T20I series against Afghanistan immediately after their India tour concludes.
