CPL 2025: Trinbago Knight Riders appoint Dwayne Bravo as new head coach
Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) have appointed Dwayne Bravo as their head coach for the 2025 edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), ushering in a new era for the most successful franchise in tournament history. Bravo replaces Phil Simmons, who has taken up the role of head coach of the Bangladesh men's national team.A CPL stalwart, Bravo's association with the tournament stretches back to its inception in 2013. He played 107 matches across 11 seasons, finishing with 129 wickets at an economy rate of 8.74. Nine of those seasons were spent with TKR, a franchise he helped to four titles, and a fifth with St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in 2021—his lone season away, which also saw him lead the side to their maiden an honour to be given the opportunity to be head coach of TKR, a team that's very close to my heart,' Bravo said in a post on social media. 'I would like to personally thank Coach Phil Simmons for his time and commitment over the last few years, and now I look forward to this new challenge for me and my staff.' This appointment continues Bravo's growing coaching portfolio. Last year, he was named head coach of the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the ILT20, another team owned by the Knight Riders group. He also served as a mentor for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2025 IPL and had stints as a bowling consultant with Chennai Super Kings in 2023 and 2024, following his retirement from playing in the IPL in the international level, Bravo was the bowling consultant for Afghanistan during the 2024 T20 World Cup, where the team made a historic run to the semi-finals before being knocked out by South will be hoping Bravo's experience and leadership can take them back to the top after a mixed campaign in CPL 2024. The franchise finished third in the league stage but bowed out in the Eliminator following a defeat to Barbados his transition into coaching, Bravo isn't done playing yet. Captains with MOST ICC titles, it's not MS Dhoni or Ricky Ponting at top
A good captain in cricket is not that person who sets the field, he/she sets the tone to a whole generation. The sport events such as World Cup, T20 World Cup, and Champions Trophy of ICC are its largest stages. Very few leaders have been able to conquer them, leaving alone competing with them. With Steve Waugh as the captain, Australia won the ICC Cricket World Cup in 1999 and ICC KnockOut Trophy (currently known as the Champions trophy) in 2000. His emphasis on mental toughness and team cohesion laid the foundation for Australia's dominant era and served as a blueprint for future captains. Pat Cummins brought Australia to unprecedented success in 2023, when the team won ICC World Test Championship and ICC Cricket World Cup. The global prominence with the red ball and white ball in such a short period is one of the most unlikely aspects of the contemporary cricket game, and it makes the Cummins leadership outstanding. Darren Sammy wrote history as he became the first captain to clinch two ICC T20 World cups in 2012 and 2016. A leader by all means, he also inspired and made the ceremony after the 2016 final contain all emotions, with tears, and happiness, and dancing being remembered as one of the most recognised moments in cricket. The first skipper to lift an ICC title was Clive Lloyd and the West Indies won the ICC Cricket World Cup back to back in 1975 and 1979. His side had a ferocious batting and bowling combination, explosive, awe-inspiring and nearly unstoppable and that solidified the Caribbean influence in international cricket. A genuine cricketing star, Lloyd made a match winning 102 in the inaugural 1975 final to establish the tone of a West Indian dominance. Some of the achievements of MS Dhoni as a captain involve the ICC T20 World Cup in 2007, ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011 and ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. His influence is not confined to the silverware, however, and it is characterised by his ability to quietly remain calm in crunch situations, faith in the youth and a radicalisation of the white-ball game in India. Ricky Ponting has led Australia to win two ICC Cricket World Cups in 2003 and 2007 as well as ICC Champions Trophy titles in 2006 and 2009. Captaining the troops of a star-studded team comprising of the likes of Warne, McGrath and Gilchrist; Ponting transformed them into an invincible bowling team which believed in being aggressive, precise and an invincible and undying spirit. There is a record in his name as his team did not lose during the 2003 and the 2007 ODI World Cups. Among all women and men in the cricketing world, no captain has been able to conquer as many ICC titles as Meg Lanning. During her tenure, Australia won four world titles of the ICC Women T20 World cups (2014, 2018, 2020 and 2023) and the ICC Women Cricket World Cup in 2022.

‘It's all about ubuntu': Fans celebrate with world champion Proteas

Picture: Michel Bega South Africa's latest sporting victory had special relevance for some, while others were just there to bask in national pride, with hundreds of fans turning up in Sandton on Thursday to welcome the Proteas team home. After securing the country's first major cricket title in 27 years, beating Australia to win the World Test Championship final last weekend, the Proteas squad returned to a lively reception at OR Tambo International on Wednesday. And Cricket South Africa invited fans to participate in an activation on Thursday which gave supporters another opportunity to interact with the Proteas players at Nelson Mandela Square. 'A special occasion' Abdul 'Jack' Manack, who played 50 matches for the former Transvaal team between 1983 and 1993 (including a game at Lord's), was disappointed not to return to the world-renowned ground to see the Proteas win last week. He turned out, however, to welcome the team home. 'What happened over the weekend was a special occasion,' Manack said. 'This is what we need in the country, to unite our country, to bring our country together. It's all about ubuntu, it's all about transformation.' 'Congratulations to the Proteas. They have won it and made us proud, so we are here to celebrate them,' he said. Most of the Proteas players, perhaps tired following their travels (and maybe some post-match celebrations), were admittedly a little shy about dancing on stage, despite being enticed. But skipper Temba Bavuma said they appreciated the turnout and it was clear by the reaction of fans just how much of an effect it had on people at home when they lifted the Test mace in London. 'You've really shown us what it means, what we did out there, and to see all you guys enjoy this moment with us makes us really proud of our efforts,' Bavuma told the crowd. Golden run for SA sport The world Test cricket title is the latest achievement on a golden run of form for South Africa in the sporting arena, with the country having shone in multiple sports over the last couple of years. Though the Test title ended a lengthy trophy drought, the SA cricket teams have been performing well, reaching multiple playoffs. The Proteas men reached the final of last year's T20 World Cup in the West Indies, and the Proteas women progressed to the finals of the 2023 T20 World Cup on home soil and the 2024 T20 showpiece in the UAE. In other sports, the Springboks won a record fourth Rugby World Cup title in 2023 in France, while South Africa earned six medals in four codes – swimming, athletics, cross country cycling and rugby sevens – at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Midway though this year, Dricus du Plessis has already defended his UFC middleweight title for the second time in a rematch against Sean Strickland, Rayno Nel has won the World's Strongest Man competition, and the national sprinting squad have secured three medals (including two gold) at the World Athletics Relays championship.

BCCI slammed for India being put in same group as Pakistan in 2026 Women's T20 World Cup: 'Nationalism has a cost'
The BCCI was expected to boycott Pakistan in the aftermath of the Pahalgam Terror Attack as well as the recent armed conflict between New Delhi and Islamabad. Shubman Gill told 'there are no expectations' from Team India, draws MS Dhoni parallel before 1st Test vs England
Team India is currently undergoing a significant transition, marked by the Test retirements of stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma last month. Since being appointed head coach following India's T20 World Cup triumph in 2024, Gautam Gambhir has emerged as a commanding figure in the dressing room. Known for his fierce persona and no-nonsense approach, Gambhir's leadership style has been evident, from bold selections to sharp, undiplomatic responses in press conferences. In the wake of Kohli and Rohit's exits, speculation swirled around whether it was the team management, possibly led by Gambhir, that communicated to the legendary duo that their inconsistent form no longer guaranteed a place in the side. While the exact trigger behind their retirement remains unclear, there is little doubt that Gambhir now wields considerable influence over the team's direction. With Shubman Gill stepping into the role of Test captain, many believe the team now bears Gambhir's imprint, that this is, in essence, his team. However, former Indian cricketer WV Raman offered a different perspective. Raman believes it is unfair to single out Gambhir, stressing that the captain has the ultimate responsibility. 'It's not all about the coach all the time. Yes, we all know Gambhir is a good tactician. He's also a very intense man. And he's also got the best interest of the team at heart. So, we got to try and forget the fact that everything should be related to the coach. We didn't do this with his predecessors. We are doing it with him, if you remember,' Raman told The Times of India. 'So, coach is always somebody who's got to stay in the background. We should allow the coach to do his job. And he's going to take all the decisions based on how he sees things. Because he's the one who is completely aware of what is exactly happening with each and every individual in the side. And then as far as this team is concerned, this will always be a team under the title of a captain who is successful.' Raman also believes that the current transition period in the Indian team mirrors the time when MS Dhoni took over the captaincy before the 2007 T20 World Cup. Dhoni, a first-time captain, led a young team to title victory at the time, which kickstarted a golden era in Indian cricket. 'As far as this particular team is concerned, even though there's a lot of apprehension about how the series will pan out, I for one think this team is in the same situation as Dhoni's team when they embarked on the first T20 World Cup. There are no expectations. So, that is a big advantage for this side. That's a real big advantage for this side. And they have everything to gain. The only way is up,' said Raman. 'And I think therein lies this team to spring a surprise. Because let's not forget that even though India has not won many series in England, we've always sprung a lot of surprises there. Starting from Chandra's (Bhagwath Chandrasekhar) spell and Ajit Wadekar's series win in 1971, India has sprung a surprise or two always in England.'
