Best NFL quarterbacks 2025: Ranking the 10 best NFL quarterbacks right now
Who is the best quarterback in the NFL? Patrick Mahomes is the popular answer, and considering he's won two of the last three Super Bowls, that's a fair answer. Yet, we're living in a golden era of quarterback play where others like reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen and two-time MVP Lamar Jackson deserve consideration too.
We also can't forget about last year's MVP runner-up Joe Burrow either. Ultimately, there are several options who can be considered among the best NFL quarterbacks.

Let's dive into our list of the best NFL quarterbacks right now as we approach the 2025 season.
1. Lamar Jackson

He didn't win the MVP last year, but the Baltimore Ravens quarterback still had an excellent season, producing an NFL-high 8.8 yards per passing attempt while having the league's best touchdown ratio. Simply put, Jackson was the most dangerous quarterback to defend. As incredible as is with his feet, Jackson has become arguably more potent with his arm.
Lamar Jackson stats (2024): 4,172 passing yards, 41 TD, 4 INT, 915 rush yds, 4 TD

2. Josh Allen

The first-time NFL MVP winner not only had a career low in interceptions last year, he remained extremely productive despite losing top receiver Stefon Diggs via trade. Allen wasn't bothered and didn't overly rely on his legs like other quarterbacks may do after being forced to change. Others arguably have a No. 1 receiving weapon, but Allen has to do most of the work himself and that gives him a slight boost here.

Josh Allen stats (2024): 3,731 passing yards, 28 TD, 6 INT, 531 rush yds, 12 TD

3. Joe Burrow

The former No. 1 overall pick returned from a torn wrist ligament in 2023 with a vengeance in 2024. Burrow played like his hair was on fire, leading the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns. At times, it felt like Burrow would nearly single-handedly lead the Bengals to the playoffs, but his effort just wasn't enough when combined with a horrific defense in Cincinnati. Still, Burrow is undoubtedly one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL today.
Joe Burrow stats (2024:) 4,918 passing yards, 43 TD, 9 INT, 201 rush yds, 2 TD

4. Patrick Mahomes

His raw stats may no longer rival the numbers he was putting up earlier in his career with Tyreek Hill, but Patrick Mahomes' postseason results cannot be ignored after leading his team to five of the past seven Super Bowls. Mahomes changed the game with his unique release points, even if it means throwing behind his back or flipping hands if needed. His uncanny ability to make plays on the run makes him one of the toughest players to defend in NFL history, not just today.

5. Jayden Daniels

What Jayden Daniels did as a rookie was nothing short of incredible, leading the Commanders to the NFC Conference Championship when the team entered the season as a group that won four games the previous season. Now, Daniels has a chance to build upon his numbers, but he could just as easily go the way of C.J. Stroud and disappear from this list altogether heading into the following season.
Jayden Daniels stats (2024:) 3,568 passing yards, 25 TD, 9 INT, 891 rush yds, 6 TD

6. Baker Mayfield

While the former No. 1 overall pick had to play for a total of four different teams before establishing himself as a franchise quarterback, Baker Mayfield is here to stay now. Still just 30 years old, Mayfield is in his prime and coming off his second consecutive 4,000-yard year. Armed with an even stronger receiver trio led by Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and incoming rookie first-round pick Emeka Egbuka, the sky is the limit for Mayfield this season.

7. Jared Goff

As a former No. 1 overall pick who led his team to a Super Bowl appearance in his third NFL season, yet was traded just two years later, Jared Goff has experienced the crazy highs and lows of playing in the pros. Yet, Goff has proven to be a tough cookie, and now he's back on top of the mountaintop, leading an extremely potent and efficient offense while having a strong chance to return to the promised land and ideally win this time.
Jared Goff stats (2024:) 4,629 passing yards, 37 TD, 12 INT, 56 rush yds, 0 TD

8. Matthew Stafford

At 37, Matthew Stafford is the oldest player on this list, but he hasn't lost his fastball playing in Sean McVay's brilliant offense. If anything Stafford's 16 years of NFL experience has made him an even better quarterback, learning how to get rid of the ball before defenders have a chance to touch him.

Matthew Stafford stats (2024): 3,762 passing yards, 20 TD, 8 INT, 41 rush yds, 0 TD

9. Jalen Hurts

Yes, Jalen Hurts just led the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl, but he was asked to do farr less as a passer than anyone else on this list. However, his strengths as a rusher who can constantly put the Eagles in advantageous situations cannot be ignored either, now does his extremely efficient playoff run that produced five passing and five rushing touchdowns compared to just one interception.
Jalen Hurts stats (2024): 2,903 passing yards, 18 TD, 5 INT, 630 rush yds, 14 TD

10. Justin Herbert

If he returns to peak form iwtht he Pittsburgh Steelers, then Aaron Rodgers deserves consideration here too. Yet, we're going off what players have done lately, and there's no denying Justin Herbert merits a spot in a list of the best NFL quarterbacks for 2025. Herbert is coming off a season where he had the NFL's best interception ratio, and he was in the first year of Jim Harbaugh's system. We expect Herbert to take another step this year thanks to a stronger infrastructure in LA.

Justin Herbert stats (2024): 3,870 passing yards, 23 TD, 3 INT, 306 rush yds, 2 TD

Mets send slumping catcher Francisco Alvarez to minors
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Scuffling catcher Francisco Alvarez was demoted to the minors by the New York Mets on Sunday. The team optioned Alvarez to Triple-A Syracuse and recalled Hayden Senger from its top farm club before Sunday night's series finale against the Philadelphia Phillies. Senger will back up Luis Torrens, who replaces Alvarez as New York's primary catcher. The move comes after Alvarez went 2 for 5 with a 452-foot home run late in Saturday night's 11-4 victory over Philadelphia, which snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Mets. But he is batting only .236 with three homers, three doubles, 11 RBIs and a .652 OPS in 35 games this year. Alvarez was activated April 25 after beginning the season on the injured list with a hamate fracture in his left hand, and he missed two games this month while on the paternity list. The 23-year-old Alvarez, once rated baseball's best minor league prospect, had 25 homers and 63 RBIs with a .721 OPS as a rookie in 2023. Senger, 28, made his major league debut for the Mets this season and was batting .179 (5 for 28) in 13 big league games. New York began the day tied with Philadelphia atop the NL East. ___ AP MLB:

Pérez broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run blast in the seventh inning off Garrett Cleavinger (0-3). Dillon Dingler added two hits and an RBI for Detroit, which maintained the best record in the majors (49-30). All three of Greene's hits, including doubles in the second and ninth, led off run-scoring innings. In left field, meanwhile, he made sliding catches to rob Jake Mangum and Junior Caminero of extra bases. And with two outs in the third, he retired Brandon Lowe on an acrobatic catch in foul territory, nearly flipping into the Tigers' bullpen. Yandy Díaz (13 games) and Lowe (11 games) each extended hitting streaks with infield singles for Tampa Bay. Caminero hit his team-leading 19th homer and reached the 50-RBI mark on the year. Tigers starter Casey Mize left a 1-1 game in the sixth after a visit from athletic trainer Kelly Rhoades, leaving with an undisclosed injury. He allowed one run and six hits in five innings, with no walks and five strikeouts. Two Detroit starting pitchers already are on the injured list, right-handers Jackson Jobe (right elbow surgery) and Reese Olson (right ring finger inflammation). Tyler Holton (3-3) picked up the win in relief. Key moment Heavy ninth-inning rain jump-started the Tigers' offense. Through the storm, Detroit hit for the cycle in the six-run inning, breaking open a 3-1 game with six consecutive hits. Greene and Spencer Torkelson led off with doubles, Javier Báez tripled and Meadows blasted a three-run homer. Following the barrage, play resumed after an 18-minute delay. Key statistic Greene batted .600 (6 for 10) in the series with five runs, two doubles, two homers and four RBI. Up next Detroit opens a home series Tuesday against the Athletics, with LHP Tarik Subal (8-2, 2.06 ERA) facing RHP Luis Severino (2-7, 4.42). Rays RHP Taj Bradley (4-5, 4.95) starts Tuesday at Kansas City against LHP Kris Bubic (6-2, 4.12).

Tigers Fans Emotional After Second Consecutive Rough Start by SP Jack Flaherty
Tigers Fans Emotional After Second Consecutive Rough Start by SP Jack Flaherty originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Detroit Tigers trailed the Tampa Bay Rays 8-1 early Saturday afternoon as manager AJ Hinch's team appeared on the verge of going down two games in its three-game series with the AL rival Rays. Advertisement The Rays continued to rack up runs after chasing starter Brant Hurter from the game and continuing to pile on reliever Sawyer Gipson-Long. The game came one day after Tigers starter Jack Flaherty, the team's big offseason addition from the Dodgers, was shellacked in a 14-8 loss and chased after 2.1 innings of work. Flaherty's two-game stat total was hard to believe and a bad look in comparison to his previous month, causing Tigers fans to react on X. "Absolutely terrible." Flaherty gave up eight runs on Friday against the Rays and seven runs last Saturday against the Reds, bringing his total to 16 runs given up this month in four starts. Advertisement Flaherty gave up 15 runs in five starts during the month of May, showing the depth of his relative struggles in June so far. "Has been bad," one fan said. "Time to trade him for more prospects," another added. "He looks like doesn't even care on the mound," another said. "The Rory of baseball. Got the finale and then downhill," another added on the World Series winning former Dodger. "He wants to stay a Tiger," another added. "Last time he pitched well for them they traded him," they added in jest. "Maybe skip a start and get it figured out," another added.
