Mamelodi Sundowns defender Aubrey Modiba says the South African champions are braced for a tough opening match when they face Korea Republic's Ulsan HD in their FIFA Club World Cup opener on Wednesday (midnight SA time) in Orlando, Florida.
The match, which will take place at Inter & Co Stadium, marks the start of a historic campaign for the Tshwane-based outfit as they aim to fly the African flag high at the prestigious global tournament.

Modiba, speaking from the team's base in Bradenton, acknowledged the quality of their opponents despite limited knowledge of the reigning K League champions.
'Ulsan are a very good side and similar to us in terms of how we play,' said Modiba.
'They've got good players and they're doing very well in their respective league. They're not here by mistake because they deserve to be here so we're expecting a tough game.'
While temperatures in Florida have soared this week, Modiba insisted the team is adapting well and has settled into their new surroundings. In their quest to reach the knockout phase, they will also play Germany's Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense of Brazil.
'Everything has been good. We arrived on Monday after leaving South Africa on Sunday. It's quite hot but we can't complain, we have to work,' he said.
'Obviously I'm from Limpopo so I'm familiar with the weather. We've prepared well and we're ready to go. The food, hotel and hospitality have been great.

'Everyone is friendly and welcoming. We've done gym work, the coach is making sure the team is ready, and there are no major injuries. We're hoping to stay longer by doing well in the tournament.'

Springboks to stick to their guns against unpredictable Barbarians

It might not be an official Test match, but the Springboks aren't planning on holding anything back when they meet the Barbarians in a historic match in Cape Town on Saturday, 28 June. The world champions will host the famous invitational side on South African soil for the first time on Saturday. Preparing to go up against a team like the Barbarians can be tricky given their unpredictable nature. But the Springboks are gearing up to stick to their own game. 'We see it as a Test match and we will play the game that way,' Bok assistant coach Tony Brown said during a press conference on Monday. 'The Barbarians are a famous side worldwide. Everyone knows how they play. Everyone knows what they try to do and the style they try to uphold as a Barbarians team. We're aware of what's coming – it is unpredictable rugby. 'You can't really prepare for it. But, if your awareness is high around what they're trying to do, then we can prepare as well as we can.' Brown has been instrumental in the Boks' continued growth since joining the back-to-back World Cup winners ahead of the 2024 season. With him on board, the South Africans' traditional set-piece strength and physicality have been perfectly complimented by their attacking evolution. During the 2024 season, the Springboks enjoyed increased numbers in various attacking categories, including tries and points scored, meters gained, and carries-and passes made. With this in mind, responding to Robbie Deans' Barbarians – and serving challenges of their own – shouldn't be too difficult for the Boks. 'It's definitely a different challenge to what we normally would have,' Brown added. 'They've always knocked over plenty of great sides over the years. 'The challenge is massive. That is exactly what we want for what we can call our first Test of the year.' History (slightly) favours BaaBaas The match will be the precursor to a packed international season for the Boks. It will be the ninth meeting between the sides. South Africa have faced the Barbarians on eight occasions, claiming three victories to the Barbarians' four. Their last meeting nine years ago ended in a draw. 'It won't be Barbarians versus Barbarians; it will be Springboks versus Barbarians,' Brown explained. 'Everything we do will be about how we play the game, how we play Test match rugby, and how we are going to win the game. 'The first thing is we see it as a Test match, and we're going to play the game that way. 'So, the guys who have been given the opportunity to play against the BaaBaas need to perform as best they can. 'We need to get our coaching right, we need to get our plans right. We always win Test matches through putting the opposition under pressure, whether it's attack and defence. So that'll be our plan against the BaaBaas.' WHO DO YOU THINK WILL WIN THE HISTORIC MATCH? Orlando Pirates turn to Ouaddou after Rulani talks collapse why

Orlando Pirates stunned fans on Monday by unveiling Moroccan coach Abdeslam Ouaddou as their new head coach, despite recent talks with Rulani Mokwena. The club moved swiftly as their European pre-season tour looms, with their first fixture against Bolton Wanderers set for 11 July in Spain. A source revealed that Mokwena remained a serious candidate, but negotiations hit a stumbling block that ultimately shifted the Buccaneers' plans. While several reports believed a deal was nearing finalisation, Pirates opted for a different direction. A club stakeholder explained one of the major reasons behind the breakdown in talks. 'Rulani (Mokwena) wanted to bring in his own bench. That didn't work out. It is part of the reason for the change,' the source said. This demand reportedly clashed with the club's internal structure. Prompting a rethink as the club pressed on with their search for a coach who fits their broader criteria. Respect remains between Mokwena and Pirates Despite the failed negotiations, the relationship between Mokwena and the Pirates hierarchy remains respectful. 'There was interest in coach Mokwena from other clubs and it's believed that Pirates wanted to give him that chance. They found one [coach] who could suit their criteria,' the source noted. Mokwena recently attracted interest from Pyramids FC, Yanga SC, and Zamalek, but he ruled himself out of contention for the Egyptian giants. However, the unfolding events at Orlando Pirates may have broader implications on where he lands next. Ouaddou, who recently resigned from Marumo Gallants and was reportedly close to joining Chippa United. Now takes the reins at one of South Africa's most demanding clubs. His appointment marks a dramatic twist and has already triggered wide debate among fans and pundits. 'You know what was happening was a tricky situation. The club hierarchy made their decision and Rulani was not the one,' a source said. Will Ouaddou be a success at Orlando Pirates? Finally, Vaal will be represented in the top flight football

SEDIBENG.- At last, the Vaal will have a representative in the top-flight football as part of the ABC Motsepe League. This was after Young Pirates FC were promoted to the second division of South African football, the ABC Motsepe League, for the 2025/2026 season. Pirates FC was crowned the Gauteng Champions after their overall performance at the Inter-Regional Promotion Play-offs held in Pretoria over the weekend. The latter represented the Vaal in this promotional play-offs after being crowned the SAFA Sedibeng Hollywood Men's Regional League for the 2024/2025 season. Back to the Inter-Regional Play-offs, Pirates FC was unbeaten in all their games, which made them the Gauteng Champions. This is great news for Vaal football after a long time. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport after the play-offs, SAFA Deputy President Velaphi Motsepe was overwhelmed with joy as he made bold predictions that Pirates FC would gain promotion to the ABC Motsepe League. 'As SAFA Sedibeng, we want to take this opportunity to congratulate Young Pirates on their achievement. This is something to celebrate, as this league was declared null and void for the past two seasons. I am happy that our league was declared the best in Gauteng, regardless of our challenges in previous years. As SAFA Sedibeng, we give Young Pirates FC our support as much as we can to sustain their ABC Motsepe League status. I do not doubt that the club is in this league to compete, not to add numbers,' said Motsepe. Sedibeng Ster Sport attempted to get hold of the club's chairperson, but was unsuccessful as he was out of the country at the time.
