Fern Britton admits struggle not to 'bad-mouth' Phil Vickery to their daughter
Former This Morning host, Fern Britton, divorced celebrity chef, Phil Vickery, in 2020 after two decades together and welcoming the couple's daughter, Winnie, into the world
Fern Britton has admitted it's not easy keeping quiet about her ex Phil Vickery when she's with the couple's daughter, Winnie. The former This Morning host, 67, called it quits with the celebrity chef, 64, in 2020 after two decades together.
Fern has revealed that she and Phil no longer speak and admitted she finds it hard not to 'bad-mouth' her ex to their daughter, 23, as she lifted the lid on the family's dynamic. Explaining that Winnie "adores" her dad, she said: "Winnie adores him. I'm not going to bad-mouth him in front of her; at least, I try very hard not to. I was the child of divorced parents and my mum never bad-mouthed my father."
The veteran presenter made the candid comments in Yours magazine, where she claims Phil "stopped talking" to her six years ago.
In 2020, speaking to Good Morning Britain, heartbroken Fern revealed the personal struggles that led to their separation, as she explained: "My mum died and my father died and unfortunately Phil and I fell apart."
However, later speaking to Woman and Home magazine, she explained that the former couple's lives would always be intertwined, despite their differences, revealing: "We simply needed to follow our own paths. Over time we realised we weren't necessarily having the kind of life we once did. It seemed right to say 'thank you' and move on. But we do have a good friendship."
"Phil and I had the greatest fun together and we have the most beautiful daughter together, Winnie... so we will always be connected."
Fern has previously spoken about her own parents' relationship, explaining how she and her sister, scriptwriter, Cherry Britton, were always given "some convoluted stories" about why their father, Tony Britton, "wasn't here".
Tony and his first wife Ruth, Fern's mother, divorced when she was just four years. Writing in her autobiography The Older I Get How I Repowered My Life, the Celebrity Big Brother star explains how she discovered she had no memories of her father living with her.
She revealed by the time she was born in 1957, Tony had already left her mother to be with Eva Castle, who would become his second wife.
She wrote: "It transpired that during one visit of a few hours back to see her, he and my mum had temporarily rekindled their feelings and I was conceived.
"Did he go back to his new partner with a – possibly – guilty spring in his step? How did he manage to explain my eventual appearance to his future wife?"
After only finding the truth when she was aged 55, Fern admitted: "I was left with a strong feeling of 'why did nobody say?' Everyone knew,' adding that is had left her was lasting trust issues."
Fern split from her first husband, Clive, after more than a decade together and the birth of their three kids, twins Jack and Harry and daughter Grace. They called it quits officially in 2000, and later that year, she tied the knot with Phil.

Holly Willoughby looks almost unrecognisable as she debuts new look Former This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby has shown off a new look and her fans are loving it Holly hasn't got a TV show lined up currently (Image: WireImage ) Holly Willoughby has debuted an edgy new style, much to the delight of her fans. The former This Morning presenter, 44, took to Instagram on Thursday, revealing her fresh look which featured a wavy hairdo and a bold pair of glasses. The mother-of-three shared a car selfie while humorously referring to her newfound role as her children's 'personal party driver'. Holly captioned the image: "Any other mums/dads of 16 year old, post GCSE children suddenly find themselves with a new role of personal party driver? Mums 'Mini' Cabs ... and yes... I'm now a Glasses wearer... game changer." Holly and husband Dan Baldwin have three children together, a 16-year-old son Harry, 12-year-old daughter Belle, and nine-year-old Chester. Now Harry has finished his GCSEs, it seems Holly is embracing her duty ferrying him around, reports the Mirror. You look so pretty and the glasses really suit you." Another admirer added: "Wow! ! ! Holly you have never looked better." Content cannot be displayed without consent Article continues below This update arrives amidst reports about Holly's professional future lacking confirmed TV engagements. Although she's been a regular fixture on television for many years, currently there appear to be no set plans for her viewers to anticipate. The television personality finds herself in an unusual position, without a lined-up programme for the first time in 21 years. This follows the conclusion of her regular stint on Dancing On Ice, which has been cancelled. (Image: PA ) Holly's other presenting role on Bear Hunt with Bear Grylls won't be returning either, as it too has been axed. She has also decided to step down from You Bet!, leaving Stephen Mulhern to host the show solo. There are rumours that Holly's husband, Dan Baldwin, is working on a revival of Record Breakers, potentially offering Holly a new presenting opportunity. A source told The Sun that it would make "perfect sense" for Holly to be considered for the role. They stated: "Record Breakers is likely to be a prime time hit and it would make perfect sense for Holly to take the reins. She has worked alongside Dan before and the pair know what it takes to make great telly." Holly's name has also been mentioned among potential hosts for a reboot of Cilla Black's Blind Date, with Claudia Winkleman and Davina McCall also in the running. Another project Holly is being considered for is a new Channel 4 programme aimed at discovering fresh singing talent. Holly made her return to television last year after an 18-month hiatus. Reports suggest that ITV is eager to retain Holly, following recent discussions with Katie Rawcliffe, director of entertainment and daytime, about future opportunities. An insider disclosed: "Holly always intended to lock in new presenting roles for ITV, which has been her home for so long. She didn't have anything confirmed earlier this year just due to the way the cards had fallen, but there are a string of exciting projects on the table and 2025 is looking good for Holly. "Holly is looking to the future and this week's meeting was a big part of that. It won't be a return to daytime programming but new entertainment formats." The meeting happened to coincide with the broadcast of a documentary about Holly's kidnapping. Article continues below Holly opted out of involvement in Channel 5's documentary, The Plot To Kill Holly Willoughby, which chronicled the disturbing plan by an obsessed security guard named Gavin Plumb to kidnap, sexually assault and murder her. It was this harrowing ordeal that prompted her to step back from her presenting duties on ITV1's This Morning and to temporarily withdraw from television.

The former professional dancer, 58, is set to appear on the celebrity spin-off of Channel 4's hit show, which launched in 2013, alongside fellow Strictly judge Craig Revel Horwood. Ahead of his show debut tonight (June 20), Anton appeared on Friday's episode of This Morning alongside hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary. Anton started off by saying, 'Gogglebox tonight with Craig Revel Horwood.' Alison seemed excited about the duo's upcoming appearance, replying, 'Brilliant. That's going to be great.' The Strictly Judge couldn't help but drop a "spoiler" as he revealed: 'Can I say this out loud? We had to talk about Love Island for a bit. We watched a bit of Love Island. Can I say that? Is that a spoiler?' (Image: ITV) Alison claimed, 'You probably did, and you're probably going to get in trouble for this.' Anton jumped in: "I'm probably going to get in trouble. Apologies to Channel 4,' Alison joked. 'Thank you for the exclusive.' Anton continued: 'We had a little bit of that (Love Island) and other stuff.' Dermot was keen to know which house the stars decided to film in. However, in another behind-the-scenes "secret," Anton admitted: 'Oh, right, no, we went to a place. I thought…' Before he could finish his sentence, Alison replied: 'So you had a pretend one (house).' Anton confirmed: 'Yeah.' Everyone burst out laughing as Dermot ended the segment by doing an impression of the Gogglebox narrator.'
