When most people hear "Golden Snitch," they likely immediately think about the small ball used in Quidditch, the fictional sport from Harry Potter. During these games, the "Seeker" from each team is trying to locate and catch the Snitch while the rest of the players attempt to score and block goals. It's a chaotic and lively setting in the books and movies—much like a household with young kids.
It's fitting, then, that Stanford professor and Duke-trained psychologist Dr. Caroline Fleck, author of Validation: How the Skill Set That Revolutionized Psychology Will Transform Your Relationships, Increase Your Influence, and Change Your Life, swears by a certain parenting tool that involves moms and dads seeking their own "Golden Snitch" around their kids.

"The 'Golden Snitch' refers to an effective response in a child that would otherwise get overshadowed by more problematic behavior," Dr. Fleck explains.
While she talks more about this concept in Validation, she gives Parade an idea of what this looks like.

"I give the example of my daughter, who agreed that the sugary morning snack her school provided was ruining her appetite for lunch," Dr. Fleck shares. "We said that if she ate the school's 'snack' in the morning, she couldn't have dessert after dinner. I was sure this contingency would work—my kid lives for post-dinner dessert—but it didn't. She kept eating the snack at school, not eating her lunch, and coming home ravenous and unruly. I was frustrated with her for not listening to us, disappointed with the school for providing Oreo cookie muffins and calling them 'snacks,' and frustrated with myself for failing to turn things around. With all of this negativity flying around, I would have stood no chance of finding the Golden Snitch in this situation if I hadn't been in the habit of actively seeking it."
Wait—what was it, then?
"The Golden Snitch—the effective response I would have missed—was her honesty," Dr. Fleck explains. "She could have easily lied about eating the snack so she wouldn't miss out on dessert, but she didn't. This was particularly impressive because she'd recently started experimenting with lying. We'd caught her in a couple of lies and talked to her about the importance of honesty, but it wouldn't have surprised me if she saw an opportunity to use the magical power of lying to secure her dessert after dinner. But she didn't. She had the opportunity to lie, and she didn't take it."

By finding something positive to focus on and call out, your child or grandchild has the opportunity to feel seen and understood more deeply—helping instill self-confidence instead of shame.
"Positively reinforcing her honesty at this moment by validating it—'I realize you had the opportunity to lie and didn't take it; I'm proud of you,'—is the most effective way to ensure she takes the path of honesty next time she's in a similar fork in the road," Dr. Fleck continues. "The lesson here is that whenever a kid is struggling to make progress in one domain (e.g., skipping the morning snack), look to see if there's progress in another (e.g., honesty). Kids do not develop when and where we expect them to. Ask yourself, 'If I had to reinforce something, what would it be?'"

What Epic Universe means for Universal Orlando Resort's other theme parks

It's been just over a month since the opening of Universal's shiny new theme park, Universal Epic Universe. This month also marks 35 years since the opening of Universal Orlando Resort's first park, Universal Studios Florida. Universal has four Orlando parks in all, and while many travelers are eager to experience the new addition, the company is betting big on the wider destination. 'This fourth gate changes everything for Universal Orlando,' resort President and Chief Operating Officer Karen Irwin said at a small gathering of executives and journalists at Epic Universe, on the eve of its opening. 'It not only cements us as more than a full weeklong destination vacation, but it also adds three hotels to the resort.' Here's what Epic Universe means for the rest of Universal Orlando. What are the 4 parks at Universal Orlando? Universal Studios Florida came first, opening in 1990. Universal Islands of Adventure opened in 1999, the same year as the destination's CityWalk dining and entertainment complex and first resort hotel. This marks the beginning of the larger Universal Orlando Resort. Universal Volcano Bay water park opened in 2017. Universal Epic Universe officially opened this May. Why do people go to Universal Orlando? When Universal Studios Florida first opened, its motto was 'ride the movies.' The wider resort is known for bringing beloved films to life in immersive experiences ranging from the once groundbreaking, still beloved E.T. Adventure ride to the five new worlds at Epic Universe. 'There's no replacement for being here live. Put your phones down. You're immersed, and you're experiencing all of this,' said Michael J. Cavanagh, president of Universal's parent company, Comcast Corporation. Its parks are alongside Disney among the most popular in North America, according to the latest Global Attractions Attendance Report from the Themed Entertainment Association and infrastructure leader AECOM. Like Disney, Universal has a deep bench of intellectual property. However, Universal is known for having relatively more thrill rides for big kids and adults, though its parks also have kid-friendly areas and Universal is building a new theme park in Texas geared toward young families. 'Obviously we come at it with a little different age target than they do,' Cavanagh said. One of Universal Orlando's biggest draws is the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, which now has three destinations across property: Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure, Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida and the Ministry of Magic at Epic Universe. 'If you're a Harry Potter fan, you have to see all three parks,' said Mark Woodbury, chairman and CEO of Universal Destinations and Experiences. Epic Universe mistakes: What to avoid at Universal's new theme park Where Epic Universe fits into Universal Orlando Universal doesn't see Epic Universe as taking away from its other parks, but adding to them. 'It started with the idea 'how do we continue to grow our Orlando business?' and the realization that in order do that, we needed another park to garner a full week vacation and make this the destination of choice for people for their full Orlando vacation trip,' Woodbury said. That growth benefits others too, according to Jakob Wahl, president and CEO of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions. "Not only do (guests) experience a fantastic new park, but that also implies a certain reaction because it will drive competition and we will see more parks being built because our industry likes to challenge each other," he said. "I think there are only winners in this story, and I'm very excited to see how it plays out." In addition to Universal Orlando's four parks, guests now have their choice of 11 hotels with 11,000 rooms on property, so they don't have to worry about leaving or logistics until it's time to go home. "We want you not to have to think about what you're doing ... and just feel what we're doing here,' Irwin said. 'We offer this opportunity for people to come together with people that they love, the people that they care about, and just connect and be together and have those moments and those experiences that honestly they will remember for a lifetime.' What's next for Universal Orlando? Universal has said it's working on new attractions for all of its Orlando parks. 'What you can't see sitting here are all the expansion areas that are outside the spaces that you can see,' Woodbury said from inside Celestial Park. 'There's a lot of room for expansion. We're already thinking about how that plays out, and it's the same on the north end of the campus, new attractions coming, new intellectual property coming.' Details remain under wraps, but Universal has shared the location for at least one future project. A new experience will replace Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit after it closes permanently at Universal Studios Florida on Aug. 18. How far is Epic Universe from the other parks? Epic Universe is about 4 miles away from Universal Orlando's other parks. Free resort transportation is available between the two campuses, and between Universal parks and hotels. How much do Epic Universe tickets cost? Single-day tickets to Epic Universe start at $139 for guests ages 10 and older. Prices vary by date. Specially priced tickets are available for annual passholders and Military Freedom Pass holders.

Crowds gather for Totton Carnival as it marks 120 years

Balloons, colourful ribbons and smiles from ear to ear were all on show at the Totton Carnival 2025 despite fears that it could be the last one. The Totton Carnival has been a staple of the town for around 120 years with floats from charities, schools and community groups being greeted by hundreds of people who lined the streets of Totton to cheer on the annual parade. Despite the fun at the event, coupled with the glorious sunshine, some were a little downbeat that this could be the last Totton Carnival after more than a century due to a lack of volunteers. Ann Page, 69, and Helen Chant, 56, from the Totton and Eling Community Association have been creating and designing their trailer and costumes for more than six weeks. Helen Chant, Charlotte Orchard and Ann Page (Image: NQ) Helen, a Totton resident for more than 25-years, said: "We have so many organisations taking part today - there are dance schools, scout groups, charities and community groups like ourselves. "We then parade through the town on the back of our trailers for all the residents to enjoy. "Our team have put a huge amount of work into today. We have handmade everything using what time we have after work and at the weekend." Floats paraded the Totton streets (Image: NQ) Ann has been taking part in the Totton carnival since she was four-years-old. READ MORE: Kate Nash 'superfan' from Southampton dies at just 22 She said: "The carnival is fantastic but it needs more support if its going to happen again next year. "Without the carnival we would loose our community spirit. Totton is a really big town and we need community events just like the carnival. it brings people together and puts smiles on faces." Gill Knighton is the chairman for the Totton Carnival and has had to do much of the work herself. Gill Knighton (Image: NQ) She said: "Its taken a whole year just to pull all of this together - this year marks 120 years - and if volunteers don't come forward this really could be the last one. "I'm looking for eight to 14 volunteers for our committee who can get in touch with us on our Facebook page. We have all sorts of different jobs that need doing and it would be devastating if we could not do this again." The floats and trailers started the carnival at the AFC Totton ground on Saturday, June 21, then paraded through Totton town centre and finished at Eling Recreational ground.

J.K. Rowling Praises Scripts for ‘Harry Potter' HBO Series as Fans Continue Boycott Over Anti-Trans Views

As backlash over J.K. Rowling's stance on transgender rights continues to grow, the controversial author is doubling down on her involvement in the upcoming Harry Potter reboot at HBO — and giving fans a first taste of what's to come. While many longtime fans have vowed to boycott the new series due to Rowling's anti-transgender rhetoric, the author is hyping up those still on her side as the Warner Bros. Discovery project heads into production this summer, with a 2026 premiere date on the horizon. 'I read the first two episodes of the forthcoming HBO Harry Potter series and they are SO, SO, SO GOOD!' Rowling shared on X, adding that she's 'worked closely' with the show's writers' room. When one follower asked if she's directly writing the new scripts, Rowling clarified, 'No, but I've worked closely with the extremely talented writers.' HBO Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys has previously addressed the controversy surrounding Rowling and whether her politics will influence the reboot. 'The decision to be in business with J.K. Rowling is not new for us,' Bloys said during an appearance on The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast. 'We've been in business for 25 years. We already have a show on HBO from her called C.B. Strike that we do with the BBC.' Bloys continued, 'It's pretty clear that those are her personal, political views. She's entitled to them. Harry Potter is not secretly being infused with anything. If you want to debate her, you can go on Twitter.' According to Deadline, Rowling was involved in the original pitch process and will executive produce the series through her Brontë Film and TV banner. Bloys confirmed her involvement, saying, 'She will be involved. She's an executive producer on the show. Her insights are going to be helpful on that.' He added that Rowling's ongoing controversies are 'very nuanced and complicated,' but emphasized, 'Our priority is what's on the screen. Obviously, the Harry Potter story is incredibly affirmative and positive and about love and self-acceptance. That's our priority — what's on screen.' Rowling sparked renewed outrage after she publicly praised the UK Supreme Court's ruling that trans women can be excluded from the legal definition of 'women.' In response, more than 400 individuals signed an open letter demanding the UK film and TV industry take action. Among them was actor Paapa Essiedu — who is now confirmed to play Professor Snape in the upcoming reboot.
