James Gunn Clarifies Where Things Stand With The DCU's Justice League, But I Especially Like How Superman's Justice Gang Compares To The Classic Team

The Justice League is arguably DC Comics' most famous superhero team, and when the DC Extended Universe franchise was running, we got to see this team form in 2017 on the big screen to… less-than-ideal results. Will the DCEU's successor, the DC Universe, follow suit and feature its own Justice League? James Gunn, who co-runs DC Studios with Peter Safran, has opened up on that subject, as well how the Justice Gang seen in his Superman reboot compares to the classic team.
Unlike the DCEU, the DCU's Earth is a world where the public has known about metahumans, i.e. super-powered individuals for 300 years, per Gunn. However, the filmmaker informed EW ahead of Superman's release on the 2025 movies schedule that this shared continuity hasn't reached a point yet where the Justice League has formed, although he's definitely been thinking about them, saying:
Of course, of course. But there is no Justice League in this world...not yet.
James Gunn also responded with a sly 'Sure' when he was asked if the Justice League factors into his larger plans for the DCU's Gods and Monsters slate. Gunn clarified that he doesn't want the audiences to feel bogged down by continuity ties in the DCU, specifically noting that one doesn't need to see Superman to enjoy the next upcoming DC movie, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. It's important for him that 'anybody can dip in and see the story that is up next and not feel like they're missing information.'
That being said, there's also a 'much bigger story' that's being told in the DCU amidst these 'specific stories' that 'will take a little bit longer to tell.' So it's hard to say when will learn how the Justice League fits into the vision Gunn is crafting, but it is good to know we'll see this group of superheroes someday. Lineup-wise, it's a good bet that David Corenswet's Superman, The Brave and the Bold's Batman and Wonder Woman (who's getting her own DCU movie) will be part of the founding lineup, just like in the comics.
In the meantime, Superman will see the Man of Steel fighting alongside the Justice Gang, comprised of Edi Gathegi's Mr. Terrific, Isabela Merced's Hawkgirl and Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner. This team is sponsored by Sean Gunn's tech billionaire character Maxwell Lord, so there's definitely a corporate bent to them, which is exemplified by their matching uniforms. They're good. They just are not saintly.
I certainly wasn't expecting the Justice Gang to betray Superman during the movie, but I also like that this trio won't have the same kind of squeaky-clean image as the Justice League often does. And for those who end up liking this particular team, you'll be seeing more of its members. Fillion and Merced will be back a month later when Peacemaker Season 2 premieres on the 2025 TV schedule, and Gathegi said Superman 'isn't the only project' that he'll be in.
The Justice League may not be assembled yet in the DCU, but we're not lacking in superheroes to follow along with in this franchise still in its infancy. Superman flies into theaters on July 11.

The film marks David Corenswet's first time in the capes, boots, and — yes — trunks as Superman. Rounding out the movie's central trio are Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. But these three are far from the only characters joining Clark Kent/Kal-El in Metropolis. Daily Planet staffers like Jimmy Olsen and Perry White and fellow heroes such as Green Lantern, Hawkgirl and Mister Terrific will officially join the DCU in the film. Much of the marketing campaign for 'Superman' highlights Krypto, a super-powered dog and companion to Superman. 'Creature Commandos,' an animated series Gunn created for Max, became the first official project of the DCU when it released in late 2024 and early 2025. Superman's logo in the film reflects a costume worn by the character in Mark Waid and Alex Ross' 'Kingdom Come.' Released in 1996, the story features an older Superman returning to heroics after becoming disillusioned by a new generation of violent vigilantes. The use of this logo may signal a thematic connection to 'Kingdom Come' in the film, as trailers hint at Superman grappling with his place in a world of political agendas and corporate-backed heroes. 'Kingdom Come' appears in a 'Superman' tie-in box set releasing in August. Also included are Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's 'Superman for All Seasons,' Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's 'All-Star Superman,' and Alan Moore and Curt Swan's 'Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?' — three classic Superman adventures featuring the early and final days of the Man of Steel. DC fans eager to revisit Themyscira, you're in luck, DC Studios is still developing its Paradise Lost series. The show is set on Wonder Woman's mythic island home, and in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, DC Studios co-chief James Gunn gave a small but welcome update on the project and how it fits into the broader DCU, especially when it comes to the newly revealed Wonder Woman movie. 'Paradise Lost is moving along. It's slow-moving, but it's moving. And, yeah, I really love that project a lot.' When asked whether the series is connected to the upcoming Wonder Woman film, Gunn got a little… well, Gunn-ish: 'Yes. Well, yes and no. Wonder Woman's a separate thing. We're working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman's being written right now. So it's different. I mean, not different. They're connected. She's from f—ing Themyscira, so…' What we do know is that Paradise Lost is still coming, even if it won't feature Diana at all. It's meant to take place long before her birth and will explore the politics, power struggles, and mythology of Themyscira itself. Gunn has previously described the show as a kind of DCU-flavored Game of Thrones , a political fantasy thriller set in a paradise that isn't as peaceful as it looks. The show was originally announced in January 2023 as part of the first slate of the DCU reboot, and it's believed to take inspiration from the Paradise Island Lost comic arc by Phil Jimenez and George Pérez. While the creative teams for Paradise Lost and the untitled Wonder Woman movie haven't been revealed, Gunn did confirm for the first time that 'Wonder Woman's being written right now.' With Superman set to launch the new DCU on July 11th, all eyes are now on how the rest of the slate will take shape, including when we'll finally set foot on Themyscira again. Until then, we wait.

'Superman''s David Corenswet Recalls ‘Intense' Time He Screen-Tested for the Movie During Wife's Pregnancy (Exclusive)
David Corenswet tells PEOPLE that he and his wife had to keep two big secrets when they found out she was pregnant and he was cast as Superman "We had these two quite huge secrets that we just had between the two of us," he says Corenswet is PEOPLE's latest cover star as the new Superman movie is poised to take flight this summerFor Superman star David Corenswet, 2023 was a busy year: He learned he'd be a father and landed the part of the Man of Steel. In PEOPLE's new cover story, the Philadelphia native, 31, recalls going through the 'intense' time with wife Julia, 34. 'She told me that she was pregnant two days after I found out I was going to screen test for Superman,' says Corenswet. 'For the first several months of her pregnancy, as is sort of protocol, we weren't telling anybody. We had these two quite huge secrets that we just had between the two of us. And that was intense.' 'For a period we had just each other for these two huge things,' continues Corenswet, who says Julia's due date originally coincided with when he was set to start filming in early 2024. 'It was very close. It wasn't direct, but it was still very close. But it was just having to do two big unknown things at the same time. And they were both great things,' he says. The good-natured Corenswet found the lighter side of the situation. 'She gained about 40 pounds while she was pregnant and in the same period I gained about 40 pounds gaining weight for Superman,' he recalls. 'I started snoring and had to use her pregnancy pillow.' The actor says he was at his home, on a break from making the 2024 movie Twisters, when he got the call from Superman director James Gunn telling him he had been cast in the lead role. 'It started with, 'Hey David, it's James Gunn.' And I said, 'Can you prove that?' I guess in the moment before when I saw the unknown 310 number, I thought, 'I'm pretty sure this is James telling me whether or not I got the part, but it could be anybody from Los Angeles who has my number and maybe somebody's going to play a prank on me,' " Corenswet says of the phone call that changed his life. 'Anyway, I think he appreciated that and he said, 'That's a good point. I'm calling to offer you the role of Superman.' And I said, 'Well, you're the only person who could do that, so it must be you,'' Corenswet continues. Now he's hoping he did the role justice. 'I feel much more a sense of responsibility than a sense of accomplishment having done the role. I also know that so much in life and especially the life of an actor is up to chance and good luck, and certainly you get what you make of your situation,' he says. 'I just think of it as a great stroke of luck and I better do everything I can to earn the responsibility,' Corenswet continues.
