Toyota teases what could be new sixth-generation RAV4

TimesLIVE13-05-2025

Toyota Europe has shared teaser images of what is likely to be the new sixth-generation RAV4 before its official reveal on May 21.
The mid-size SUV is an important vehicle for the Japanese carmaker and a strong seller in countries around the world. It's especially popular in the US where it last year dethroned the Ford F-150 as the best-selling vehicle.
The fifth-generation RAV4 has been around since 2018 and though still capable is starting to lag behind some of its newer competitors. As such we can expect the next-generation model, probably to be built on Toyota's latest TNGA-K architecture, to debut with enhanced hybrid/plug-in hybrid powertrains offering better range, power and efficiency.
Due to the vague nature of the images provided, we can't say much about the new RAV4's exterior design other than that the front-end, when viewed from above, is somewhat reminiscent of the fifth-generation Toyota Prius — no bad thing.
The SUV's dashboard, on the other hand, is in plain view and shows a heavily digitised cockpit home to a large digital instrument cluster, heads-up display, leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel and generously sized free-standing touchscreen infotainment system.
There's also a chunky new centre console with cupholders and a redesigned gear shifter.
Toyota might drop a few more teaser images before next week's reveal but otherwise that's all we can tell you about the new RAV4 for the time being.

Toyota to raise US car prices by average $270 from July

Japanese carmaker Toyota said on Saturday it will raise prices for some vehicles sold in the US by an average of $270 (R4,883) starting in July. The carmaker's decision follows US President Donald Trump's imposition of a 25% tariff on imported vehicles and car parts. A Toyota spokesperson, however, denied the tariff directly influenced the price increase. "The latest price hike is part of our regular review of prices," said Nobu Sunaga, a Toyota spokesperson. Prices for Lexus models, Toyota's luxury brand, would increase by an average of $208 (R3,761), he said.

Chase Briscoe beats Hamlin to take Pocono win

Former NFL coach Joe Gibbs went for it on fourth down by hiring Chase Briscoe to drive his famous No 19 Toyota last June. The Mitchell, Indiana, driver converted in a giant way on Sunday. Briscoe had enough fuel to get to the end and hold off Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) teammate Denny Hamlin at Pocono Raceway on Sunday, winning the NASCAR Cup Series' The Great American Getaway 400 in Long Pond, Pennsylvania. Driving in his first season for JGR, 30-year-old Briscoe, who led 72 laps, held the point most of the final stage but appeared to be short on fuel after leaving his pit box early on lap 119. However, the fifth-year driver held a consistent half-second lead over Hamlin's No 11, beating him by 0.682 seconds for his third career win in 161 starts and earning a postseason playoff berth. "It was hard having a guy chase you, specially the guy who's probably the greatest all time here," said Briscoe of Hamlin, who holds the Pocono record with seven wins. "An amazing day for our race team. It's the first race where we've, truthfully, executed all year long." Briscoe had only two victories over his first four seasons and knew Gibbs hiring him to pilot the car Martin Truex Jnr drove to 15 wins from 2019 to 2024 would come with pressure. "They took a big chance on me, right?" Briscoe said. "Like, I wasn't everybody's first choice, I think. But for me to get here and finally deliver is an awesome feeling." Briscoe became the sixth driver in the past eight races to record his first win of 2025 and put himself in the playoffs. Following Hamlin in the seven-caution race were Ryan Blaney, Chris Buescher and Chase Elliott. Returning to his No 11 Toyota after missing the Mexico City race due to his child's birth, polesitter Hamlin had to wait out inclement weather and took the green flag at 4:30 for the 160-lap competition, the 17th race on the Cup series schedule. With a week's rest behind him, Hamlin was tough right away on the 4.02km tricky tri-oval. Fellow row 1 starter Buescher kept within striking distance early in his No 17 Ford, but Hamlin outdistanced Buescher easily to lead all 30 laps of stage 1. With some drivers short-pitting a few laps before the end, Buescher held on to second for valuable stage points. Tyler Reddick finished third, followed by Briscoe and Erik Jones. On lap 83, four-time Pocono winner Kyle Busch was squeezed in the tunnel turn and spun to spark the fifth caution just past the turn 2 area. Last week's winner Shane van Gisbergen, Ty Dillon and Christopher Bell all spun but received almost no noticeable damage. However, winless Reddick took his No 45 Toyota to the garage with brake problems, which also failed teammate Bubba Wallace earlier. Briscoe's Camry XSE came alive in the second stage and won the 65-lap segment, his first stage victory since 2022. Josh Berry, Elliott, William Byron and Buescher secured top five bonus points. With 36 laps to go, the seventh caution for Van Gisbergen spinning off turn 1 was a bad break for leader Brad Keselowski, who had earlier been penalised for entering a closed pit and had yet to pit in the late cycle of stops.

Toyota's Japanese insurer files R6.5b lawsuit against KZN government

TOYOTA South Africa Motors' (TSAM) Japan-based insurer, Tokio Marine and Nichido Fire Insurance Co. Ltd, is suing the KZN Department of Transport (DoT), Transnet and the eThekwini Municipality for R6.5b for the unprecedented damages faced by Toyota's Prospecton branch following the devastating April 2022 floods. Also read: Floods hit Prospecton industries hard The insurer filed a summons in the Durban High Court against the three defendants, with the plaintiff's court papers stating the defendants had failed in their duties of maintaining the key infrastructure meant to safeguard the Prospecton Industrial Area from flooding. It is stated within court papers that Transnet owned the Umlaas Canal and was therefore responsible for its maintenance, management, and responsible handling of the flood risk associated with it. The canal, which is lined with concrete, channels and diverts the Umlazi river around the Prospecton Industrial Area. Together with the diversion berm, which falls on the Department of Transport to maintain and manage, it forms a vital part of the flood control and prevention for the area. In addition, it states responsibility for the stormwater management system falls on the eThekwini Municipality. 'As a result of these failures, Toyota was compelled to engage various contractors to repair the damage caused by the flooding and hired specialist engineers to repair the structural damage to the premises, as well as damage to electrical installations, plumbing, air-conditioning and assembly systems,' it said. The damages, which amounted to over R6.5b, included almost R4.5b for the costs incurred during the repair and reinstatement of the premises and property, and over R2b for the losses incurred during business interruption. Also read: KZN floods listed in top 10 costliest climate disasters of 2022 MEC of the KZN DoT, Siboniso Duma, engaged with president and CEO of TSAM, Andrew Kirby on June 20. He said, 'We have agreed to sustain our relationship. We will do that in the interest of the people of KZN and the whole country. Over the years, we have worked well with Kirby and executive vice president of TSAM, Nigel Ward, manufacturing, and Toyota. We agreed that nothing should come between us and this enduring relationship. The current litigation is not being facilitated or funded by TSAM, and it does not benefit in any way from the subrogated recovery action against us. We have no doubt that Toyota will continue to be the most preferred brand in the country. One cannot over emphasise the contribution the motor car industry had made to our economy.' eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said the municipality was aware of the court action and had filed a notice to defend. Transnet's media desk issued a brief response, saying it is aware of the litigation initiated by Toyota insurers and has filed a notice to defend. It further stated that given the early stages of the case, it would be premature to offer further substantiation. The April 2022 floods Following the trail of carnage left by the April 2022 floods, heavy rainfall and landslides in KZN, President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a national state of disaster. Toyota's Prospecton plant was ravaged by the floods, and the business was left with around 4300 flood-damaged vehicles, nearly 90% of the cars on site. The automotive giant reported that over 100 000 new equipment parts needed replacing. Astonishingly, after three months of intense repairs and support from the company's Japanese head office, production resumed in August 2022. Following this, TSAM invested over R200m to prevent disasters of similar magnitude going forward, and over R100m was dedicated to establishing monitoring and maintenance systems to proactively guard against water ingress. These included an early-warning weather monitoring system, construction of perimeter canals, and significant upgrades to the site's stormwater network. An additional R128m was spent on internal interventions to protect the facility even if external systems failed. These included bund walls around critical infrastructure and raised doorways to reduce vulnerability to flooding. For more South Coast Sun news, follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
