Toyota GR Corolla hot hatch is on the way to the UK
Toyota is lining up its rally-bred GR Corolla for UK launch in the next 18 months, with the four-wheel drive hot hatch expected to join the much-lauded GR Yaris on UK roads. The Japanese brand has previously confirmed that the 296bhp Corolla will enter production at Toyota's UK plant in Burnaston, Derbyshire next year to help address lengthy global waiting lists, but is yet to say that the car, currently built only at a single factory in Japan, will be sold in Europe. Advertisement - Article continues below But talking exclusively to Auto Express, Toyota's European COO Matt Harrison dropped thinly veiled hints that British hot hatch fans won't be disappointed. 'We have a philosophy that you build where you sell, so to build in Europe and not sell in Europe would be counter to that,' he said. 'The gap between supply and demand is now, so it's about how quickly we can get it. We need to act fast.' The Burnaston site was chosen because, as well as its factory capacity, the UK has motorsport expertise that aligns with the specialist nature of the low-volume performance hatchback. 'The GR Corolla is bespoke, it doesn't go through the normal processes', Harrison told us. The GR Corolla was originally launched in 2022 in selected markets outside Europe, and it uses the same 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, four-wheel drive and torque vectoring system that has made the GR Yaris one of the hottest performance properties of recent years. Subject to the expected green light, prices for the GR Corolla are likely to kick off from over £40,000, although we'll have to wait until 2026 for full pricing and specification. Toyota's next-generation RAV4 is just around the corner, and while the brand is keeping things close to the chest, new teaser images and a confirmed reveal date of May 21 suggest the wait won't be long. The bestselling SUV in America is due for an update, and Toyota's playing it smart: expect evolutionary styling changes, enhanced hybrid performance, and an interior that borrows from the tech-forward Prius. Even though Toyota is branding this RAV4 as "all-new," it's really more of a heavy refresh. The SUV will continue riding on the same TNGA-K platform introduced with the fifth-gen model in 2018. Think of it like what Toyota just did with the new Camry — revamped looks and tech, but the bones remain the same. Under the hood, the next RAV4 is expected to stick with Toyota's proven 2.5-liter hybrid setup but with added power and better fuel efficiency. Toyota starts teasing new SUV rumoured to be the all-new RAV4
Despite being seven-year old, the RAV4 unseated the Ford F-150 to become the best-selling new vehicle in the United States in 2024. Although not named outright, the official teaser image by Toyota has already been hinted as being that of the all-new RAV4. Image: Toyota Toyota has released first teaser images of a new SUV it will debut on 21 May, without going into detail or indeed providing an actual exterior shot neither blacked-out or blurred. Released by both its North American and European divisions, the overhead shots provide no hints apart from what looks like to be fitting of a glass sunroof. Global top three best-seller According to several online publications though, the images preview that of the all-new generation RAV4 that officially became the third best-selling nameplate in the world last year with an offset of 1.02-million units. First sighted undergoing testing in January this year, the sixth generation RAV4 will replace the current XA50 that debuted back in 2018 and subsequently as the rebadged Wildlander in China the following year, and in Europe in 2020 as the restyled Suzuki Across. Inside and out Spotted by in the initial spy shots, the RAV4 retains its boxy looks, but appears more upright and more reminiscent of the current Nissan X-Trail. More intricately though, the Toyota Europe media site provided slightly details with the reveal of the newcomer's interior. Interior represents a huge departure from that of the old RAV4. Image: Toyota Europe Seemingly modelled on the all-electric bZ4X, the cabin boasts the same steering wheel, a box design for the digital instrument cluster binnacle, a deep recess on top of the latter for the Head-Up Display, and a freestanding touchscreen infotainment system. PHEV and hybrid expected Still utilising physical buttons on the steering wheel, the rest of the interior appears equally derived from the Tacoma bakkie, though as before, the RAV4 will continue to ride on a unibody platform seemingly set to be a revised version of the current TNGA-K. Toyota teases what could be new sixth-generation RAV4
Toyota Europe has shared teaser images of what is likely to be the new sixth-generation RAV4 before its official reveal on May 21. The mid-size SUV is an important vehicle for the Japanese carmaker and a strong seller in countries around the world. It's especially popular in the US where it last year dethroned the Ford F-150 as the best-selling vehicle. The fifth-generation RAV4 has been around since 2018 and though still capable is starting to lag behind some of its newer competitors. As such we can expect the next-generation model, probably to be built on Toyota's latest TNGA-K architecture, to debut with enhanced hybrid/plug-in hybrid powertrains offering better range, power and efficiency. Due to the vague nature of the images provided, we can't say much about the new RAV4's exterior design other than that the front-end, when viewed from above, is somewhat reminiscent of the fifth-generation Toyota Prius — no bad thing. The SUV's dashboard, on the other hand, is in plain view and shows a heavily digitised cockpit home to a large digital instrument cluster, heads-up display, leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel and generously sized free-standing touchscreen infotainment system. There's also a chunky new centre console with cupholders and a redesigned gear shifter. Toyota might drop a few more teaser images before next week's reveal but otherwise that's all we can tell you about the new RAV4 for the time being. Watch this space.
