Toyota clears the air on insurer's lawsuit over 2022 Durban floods

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) says it has nothing to do with a lawsuit brought by its insurer against several government bodies in connection with the devastating floods that ravaged KwaZulu-Natal in 2022. The case has been filed by Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co Ltd, the company that covered Toyota's losses after flooding shut down its Prospecton manufacturing plant near Durban in April 2022. The insurer is now going after the eThekwini municipality, the department of transport and Transnet in an effort to recover the payout it made. This kind of legal move is known as subrogation — when one party steps into the legal rights of another party, typically to pursue a claim or recover losses. The process often involves an insurance company taking over a policyholder's right to sue a responsible third party after paying out a claim. Toyota, however, has made it clear it's not behind the lawsuit, not funding it and won't see a cent if the insurer wins the case. 'We became aware of the legal proceedings and, with Tokio Marine's approval, reached out to the parties involved to let them know what was coming,' said TSAM in a statement. With the matter now officially before the courts, TSAM says it won't be commenting any further. Questions about the case, it added, should be directed to Tokio Marine. The 2022 floods caused widespread damage across the province and forced a temporary shutdown of the Prospecton plant, which is a key production hub for models such as the Hilux, Fortuner, Hiace, Corolla Cross and Corolla Quest. The disaster also dealt a blow to the local supply chain and export schedules.

Draper survives scare to reach Queen's q-finals

LONDON: British second seed Jack Draper survived a scare to reach the Queen's Club quarter-finals with a gritty 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7/5) win over Australia's Alexei Popyrin on Wednesday. Draper was rocked by the world number 21 in the first set of the second-round tie at the Wimbledon warm-up event. But the 23-year-old hit back to level the match before taking the final set tie-break to complete his comeback in a tense encounter lasting two hours and 13 minutes in searing heat in west London. Earlier in his career, such a test of endurance would have been too much for Draper, but he believes he is made of sterner stuff these days. 'Before I felt like my energy wasn't that strong, and I felt like I looked like a bit of a Ferrari but I was a bit of a Toyota, like broke down quite easy,' Draper said. 'Now I'm starting to feel generally stronger and confident in myself. 'I have felt better and better every Grand Slam I have played.' Draper, who reached the US Open semi-finals last year, is hoping to make a strong run at Wimbledon this year after failing to get past the second round in his previous three appearance. The Londoner has made the last 16 at both the Australian and French Opens this year, rising to sixth in the ATP rankings. If Draper can reach the Queen's semi-finals for the first time after two previous last-eight exits, he will be guaranteed to be seeded fourth at Wimbledon when the grass-court Grand Slam gets underway on June 30. After losing the first set against Popyrin, Draper's powerful ground-stroke dragged him level with a double break in the second set. Popyrin clung on valiantly, saving two match points as he served at 4-5 in the final set. In the tie-break he led 4-2, pushing Draper to the brink of a shock defeat. But the Briton delighted the home crowd as he won five of the last six points, clinching the victory with an ace. Draper will play Brandon Nakashima in the quarter-finals after the American beat Britain's Dan Evans 7-5, 7-6 (7/4). On the day he was awarded a wild card entry into Wimbledon, the 35-year-old Evans was unable to emulate his surprise first-round win against Frances Tiafoe. In Wednesday's other matches, Danish fourth seed Holger Rune fought back to seal a 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over American Mackenzie McDonald. Rune, who reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals in 2023, plays Roberto Bautista Agut in the quarter-finals after the Spaniard beat Czech eighth seed Jakub Mensik 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. – AFP

All cars in Japan to have systems preventing accidents from gas/brake pedal mistakes by 2028

Systems will be in place to prevent dangerous mix-ups. It seems every few days the news reports on an elderly driver doing something incredibly dangerous, with the cause often being that they mistook the accelerator for the brake pedal. A recent incident happened in Hokkaido on 13 June, when a driver in her 90s accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake and drove out of a parking lot into the street where she hit another car and then hopped a curb and embankment to crash into the side of a Starbucks. Luckily, no one was injured. ▼ A news report on the crash. It's certainly not a new problem, and prefectural governments have started efforts such as making license renewals stricter for seniors by including cognitive tests. Most prefectures also have license graduation systems where the elderly can voluntarily surrender their driver's licenses for certain benefits like discounts on taxis and public transportation. According to UN estimates, nearly one in ten licensed drivers in Japan is over 75 years old. Perhaps because the rate of Japan's population aging is outpacing these efforts, little seems to have changed and storefronts continue to get smashed in by people getting their left and right mixed up. So, on 17 June, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism announced that it would become mandatory for all automatic passenger cars made after 1 September 2028 in Japan to have an 'acceleration pedal misapplication prevention system' installed. Imported cars will also require it from 1 September 2029. An acceleration pedal misapplication prevention system is a safety feature in cars that will dull a vehicle's ability to suddenly accelerate unless the driver performs certain actions that suggest they know what they're doing, like recently pressing the brake pedal, going uphill, or using a turn signal. Toyota already has it as a feature that can be turned on in their cars. ▼ An explanation video of Toyota's Acceleration Suppression System While that may help matters when implemented, issues with elderly drivers are not limited to mistaking the brake and accelerator. On 11 June, a 99-year-old driver got into a collision when driving at 20 kilometers per hour (12 miles per hour) the wrong way through the tunnel of a major highway and injured the leg of another motorist in his 40s. ▼ A news report on the crash Despite the age of the driver at fault, he was said to have passed his renewal examinations, including the cognitive test. Prominent writer, psychiatrist, and clinical psychologist Hideki Wada recently said that he believes the problem isn't the age of the drivers but the side effects of the medication they take that's been affecting their mental faculties, adding that this isn't mentioned in news reports because pharmaceutical companies often sponsor television news programs. Perhaps, taking a closer look at the medications, and especially combinations of medications, that elderly drivers are taking could also help judge their ability better than cognitive tests, but the fundamental problems remain. And while it continues to threaten everyone on the roads we'll need to tackle it from all available angles, including technology. Toyota GR Corolla hot hatch is on the way to the UK

Toyota is lining up its rally-bred GR Corolla for UK launch in the next 18 months, with the four-wheel drive hot hatch expected to join the much-lauded GR Yaris on UK roads. The Japanese brand has previously confirmed that the 296bhp Corolla will enter production at Toyota's UK plant in Burnaston, Derbyshire next year to help address lengthy global waiting lists, but is yet to say that the car, currently built only at a single factory in Japan, will be sold in Europe. Advertisement - Article continues below But talking exclusively to Auto Express, Toyota's European COO Matt Harrison dropped thinly veiled hints that British hot hatch fans won't be disappointed. 'We have a philosophy that you build where you sell, so to build in Europe and not sell in Europe would be counter to that,' he said. 'The gap between supply and demand is now, so it's about how quickly we can get it. We need to act fast.' The Burnaston site was chosen because, as well as its factory capacity, the UK has motorsport expertise that aligns with the specialist nature of the low-volume performance hatchback. 'The GR Corolla is bespoke, it doesn't go through the normal processes', Harrison told us. The GR Corolla was originally launched in 2022 in selected markets outside Europe, and it uses the same 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, four-wheel drive and torque vectoring system that has made the GR Yaris one of the hottest performance properties of recent years. Subject to the expected green light, prices for the GR Corolla are likely to kick off from over £40,000, although we'll have to wait until 2026 for full pricing and specification. With hybrid technology introduced for the first time in its long history, the Toyota Land Cruiser now blends legendary power with modern efficiency, making it more capable than ever without sacrificing its rugged identity. Exterior The 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser Hybrid brings thoughtful exterior updates. A redesigned front and rear bumper gives the Land Cruiser a more contemporary presence, while staying true to its tough roots. One key visual clue to its enhanced performance is the new '457 TT' badge, replacing the familiar '409 TT' — a clear signal of the vehicle's newfound strength. 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser Hybrid Interior Inside, the Land Cruiser remains a paragon of practicality and refinement. The three-row seating configuration is highly flexible, with a one-touch power-folding third row that lays flat to maximize cargo space. Mechanical Specifications The core engine remains the proven 3.5L twin-turbo V6, but it now works alongside an electric motor, producing a total output of 457 horsepower and a massive 790 Nm of torque. This leap in performance doesn't just raise the bar—it redefines it. Beyond power, the 2026 Land Cruiser Hybrid introduces real-world utility features like a 1,500-watt power outlet in the rear, turning the SUV into a mobile generator for camping and outdoor adventures. Fuel efficiency has also improved to 10.9 km/l, offering a compelling balance of power and economy. For those who prefer traditional power, the non-hybrid version with the same 3.5L twin-turbo V6 is still available, producing 409 hp and 650 Nm, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds and features a 110-liter fuel tank with a consumption rate of 9.5 L/100 km. 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser Hybrid Price In the UAE, the 2025 Land Cruiser Hybrid is available from Al-Futtaim Motors at the following prices: Land Cruiser VXR Hybrid : AED 389,900 (~$106,167 USD) Land Cruiser GR Sport Hybrid: AED 409,900 (~$111,613 USD) While both trims offer robust specs, the GR Sport features smaller 18-inch wheels and a 68-liter fuel tank for lighter weight and more agile handling. The VXR, on the other hand, offers 20-inch wheels and a larger 98-liter tank, providing extended driving range.
