Somnee raises $10m for AI neurotech sleep wearables
US-based Somnee has secured $10m in a seed extension round to advance its AI-powered neurotech sleep wearables.
The funding will aid the launch of the company's second-generation smart sleep headband.
Khosla Ventures spearheaded the round with contributions from Marc Benioff's TIME Ventures, the DeVos family of the NBA's Orlando Magic, LEAD VC, Seaside Ventures, Metalab, and Nelstone Ventures.
Based on sleep research and neuroscience, the company developed the headband that utilises AI technology and electroencephalogram (EEG+) to map the brain activity of users and provide personalised stimulation.
This headband is said to aid individuals in falling asleep quickly, extending their sleep duration, and minimising restlessness.
In a study, the headband demonstrated superiority over melatonin, Ambien, and cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-i).
The headband features SmartSleep AI operating system, which will offer real-time monitoring and AI-driven interventions tailored to individual sleep patterns.
Somnee's product is currently undergoing beta testing with certain NBA [National Basketball Association] teams and the performance training staff.
Founded in 2022 by Dr Matt Walker and a team from the University of California, the company has seen significant progress under CEO Tim Rosa, who joined 18 months ago.
Somnee is actively seeking further collaborations with professional sports teams, employers, as well as brands focusing on healthcare to leverage research that connects sleep quality with athletic performance, longevity, and productivity.
Dr Walker said: 'We're trying to speak to the brain in its own language – using gentle, precisely timed pulses of electricity, not unlike how a conductor uses subtle hand movements to guide an orchestra into harmony.
'The goal was to create what I call a 'blast radius' of benefit: deeper sleep, more efficient sleep, and a quicker descent into sleep itself by preparing the brain just before sleep, we're trying to drive more powerful deep-sleep brainwaves, and give you a faster entry into sleep to begin with.'
Last year, Somnee introduced an upgraded app and new features for its smart sleep headband.
"Somnee raises $10m for AI neurotech sleep wearables" was originally created and published by Medical Device Network, a GlobalData owned brand.

Celtics Predicted to Make Trade With Utah Jazz Before NBA Draft
Celtics Predicted to Make Trade With Utah Jazz Before NBA Draft originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Celtics are in a pickle this offseason. They want to avoid the NBA's second tax apron while remaining a title contender. That will mean some players will have to go to make it work. Advertisement It is a shame because Brad Stevens cleverly constructed a title team, but in the modern NBA, maintaining a title status has become more complicated than ever. The NBA's tax aprons force teams to pull the plug on their teams sooner than they would in the past. Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis have been the trade candidates that have come up the most. Both played a massive role in the franchise winning its 18th title in 2024. However, even if Boston trades both, they may not be the only ones who get the axe. Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens.© Winslow Townson-Imagn Images Another candidate is Sam Hauser, who will enter the first year of a four-year, $45 million contract next season. PhillyVoice's Adam Aaronson proposed a deal in which the Celtics would trade Hauser and the No. 32 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft to the Utah Jazz for the No. 21 pick. He explained why both sides would agree to a deal. Advertisement "Boston needs to trade Hauser this summer as part of their cost-cutting measures despite his elite three-point shooting and valuable contract," Aaronson wrote. "...The Jazz seem to be looking to improve after posting the worst record in the NBA last season, and dropping 11 spots in this range to add a shooter of Hauser's caliber on such a team-friendly deal is an obvious win." Stevens would make a trade with his front office predecessor, Danny Ainge. While that connection could make a trade more likely, Stevens has gotten in the way of the Jazz's offseason plans before, as they wanted Porzingis and Holiday two years ago before the Celtics got them. That could factor into whether Utah wants to deal with Boston. "The Lakers need to get him into that contract" - Windhorst shares the ownership change in the Lakers means they must sign Doncic to a long-term deal
"The Lakers need to get him into that contract" - Windhorst shares the ownership change in the Lakers means they must sign Doncic to a long-term deal originally appeared on Basketball Network. The Los Angeles Lakers' majority ownership officially changed hands following the franchise's record $10 billion sale to Mark Walter's TWG Global. While the deal was widely praised, Brian Windhorst believes the new regime has a clear Luka Doncic matter to address first. Advertisement "I'm big on actions over words, and this is where Luka can absolutely do that," Windhorst said on ESPN's "Get Up." "So, I would argue one of the most important things that is on the table for the entire NBA this summer is whether Luka signs a contract extension with the Lakers, which he can do on or after August 2nd… The Lakers need to get him into that contract." Windhorst believes Los Angeles gives Doncic the best runway, primarily because of Walter's deep pockets. The new group could invest in a stronger staff or spend more aggressively to build a contender — something the Buss family had grown hesitant to do in recent years. Still, none of that matters if Luka doesn't sign on the dotted line and make it official. Doncic is showing plenty of interest Immediately after the sale was announced, the Slovenian superstar had already hinted at his next move. Luka expressed excitement about the team's direction and seemed pleased that Jeanie Buss would remain as team governor. Advertisement "The Lakers are an amazing organization. I'm looking forward to meeting Mark and excited about the future. I am also grateful to Jeanie and the Buss family for welcoming me to L.A., and I'm happy that Jeanie will continue to be involved. I look forward to working with both of them to win championships!" he wrote on his official "X" account. However, as Windy indicated, nothing is set until everything is official. If the Lakers fumble the ball and allow October 20 to pass (the last day of signing the Designated Veteran Extension), anything can happen. Doncic is still under contract for next year and has a player option for the 2026-27 season. Without an extension, the Lakers can't plan long-term or build the roster stability they need. The longer he remains uncommitted, the more leverage Luka holds — and the louder the noise from other franchises gets. If that happens, everything is up in the air. Related: "They are going to have to start to paying guys" - Doc Rivers breaks down why OKC won't be able to keep this team together Retooling the roster Even if Luka stays, that's only half the battle. The Lakers still have to retool the roster around him. With that in mind, Markieff Morris believes they don't need to turn the house upside-down to make some noise. Advertisement "Ultimately, I think he (Luka) will be there," Kieff told host Mike Greenberg. "What I think they need to make happen to the roster is minor tweaks. You are in a position where LeBron maybe has two years left, and he's trying to win right now, so I don't think bringing in a ton of new pieces and kind of revamping the team makes a lot of sense." For Morris, who was traded to L.A. from Dallas with Doncic, trading a core player just to fill a hole upfront feels like an overreaction. Chasing size might come at the expense of stability and cohesion. Over the past few weeks, Austin Reaves' name has been mentioned as the most likely core piece to be dealt with if it meant acquiring a starting-level big in return. He is still the most valuable asset the team has, given his contract length and the money he is owed. As productive as AR is, L.A. can't afford to skip the homework, even if it means putting his name on the table. Whatever the case may be, the uncertainty only adds to the stakes of what comes next. The ownership change may signal a fresh start, but it also comes with immediate pressure. Securing Luka's future is only part of the equation. Now, the Lakers have to prove they can build around him, too. Advertisement Related: "Best caretaker of the Laker brand" - Magic Johnson says the L.A. Commanders' Magic Johnson Speaks Out on Los Angeles Lakers Blockbuster Sale
Commanders' Magic Johnson Speaks Out on Los Angeles Lakers Blockbuster Sale originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Earvin "Magic" Johnson may be a part-time owner of the Washington Commanders, but his heart remains in Los Angeles. Advertisement The Hall-of-Fame point guard of the LA Lakers has remained with the team for decades after his retirement. A personal relationship with the Buss family—the former ownership group of the Lakers—doesn't hurt. Magic wasn't upset by the announcement that the Buss family would be selling their majority share of the Lakers for a record $10 billion. He was proud of the family. … Sentiments he shared on social media. "Job well done to my sister Jeanie Buss for striking an incredible deal and picking the right person to carry on the Lakers' legacy and tradition of winning - Mark Walter, my business partner and friend," Johnson said. "Mark Walter is the best choice and will be the best caretaker of the Laker brand. The proof is in the pudding on what he's been able to accomplish with the LA Dodgers. Advertisement "Mark has been nothing short of a winner, notching 2 World Series and 11 NL West divisional titles in the last 12 years!" Is it weird that Johnson is a part owner of the Dodgers, and the majority owner just bought the Lakers from his friends? Perhaps. But it isn't like the Buss family is complaining. They are now the richest former owners in North American sports history. Magic, meanwhile, will remain a Laker legend forever. His ability to diversify his financial portfolio to include owners of the Dodgers and Commanders while being friends with the Lakers' new owner only shows his legacy in sports.
